You are exploring your camera menu and notice a setting called Focus Bracketing.
Your camera may call it Focus Shift Shooting, Focus BKT, or something similar. Either way, the name can make the feature sound far more complicated than it really is.
Focus bracketing tells your camera to capture several photographs while progressively changing the focusing distance between frames.
Instead of trusting one photograph to make every important part of a three-dimensional subject look sharp, the camera records several versions, each focused at a slightly different distance.
The feature can be incredibly useful for macro photography, flowers, products, jewelry, food, still life, and certain landscapes. However, understanding what the camera is actually doing is more important than simply turning the setting on.
Once you understand the menu controls, numbers, focus increments, starting point, and resulting files, focus bracketing becomes much easier to use intentionally.

What Is Focus Bracketing on a Camera?
Focus bracketing is a camera feature that captures a sequence of photographs while changing the focusing distance between each image.
Imagine photographing a flower up close.
The petal nearest the camera might be sharp in the first photograph. A second image places focus slightly deeper into the flower. Another frame captures the center more clearly, while later photographs bring the rear petals into focus.
At the end of the sequence, you have several individual photographs covering different focus planes.
You can then select those files and combine them to create greater apparent depth of field.
There is an important distinction here.
Focus bracketing creates the photographs. Focus stacking combines them.

What Actually Happens When You Press the Shutter?
This is where focus bracketing becomes easier to understand.
Suppose you photograph a small arrangement containing a flower close to the lens, another bloom slightly behind it, and a third flower farther back.
After you establish the starting focus point and begin the bracketing sequence, the camera may perform something like this:
- Capture the first photograph at your initial focus distance.
- Shift focus slightly farther into the scene.
- Capture another photograph.
- Move focus again.
- Continue making frames at progressively changed focus positions.
- Stop when the programmed sequence is complete, or you reach another camera-specific stopping condition.
Your composition normally stays essentially the same.
Keep exposure settings consistent when possible.
The lens focus is what deliberately changes.
This automated movement is what makes the feature so valuable. Repeatedly touching the lens during a long sequence can introduce camera movement or inconsistent focus changes. Automated bracketing reduces that problem.
Focus Bracketing Does Not Mean Changing the Aperture
One common source of confusion is the word bracketing.
Photographers may already know exposure bracketing, where a camera records brighter and darker exposures. That technique often creates frames such as:
- Underexposed
- Normally exposed
- Overexposed
Focus bracketing works differently.
The purpose is not to make one photograph at f/4, another at f/8, and a third at f/16.
Instead, the focusing distance changes from image to image.
Think of the sequence as moving a narrow zone of sharpness through the subject.
Exposure bracketing changes exposure.
Focus bracketing changes focus position.
Keeping that distinction in mind makes the camera menu much less confusing.
What Do the Focus Bracketing Menu Settings Mean?
Exact terminology varies among cameras, but several controls appear frequently.

Do not assume every camera offers every option.
Menu behavior, compatible lenses, available shooting directions, maximum frame counts, and compositing features vary considerably by model.
Practical tip: Search the digital manual for your exact camera model using terms such as focus bracketing, focus shift, focus BKT, and focus stacking. Searching is usually faster than scrolling through hundreds of manual pages.
What Does “Number of Shots” Mean?
The number of shots tells the camera how many photographs it is permitted or instructed to capture during the sequence.
Choosing 20 does not mean you automatically need all 20 photographs in your final stack.
Think of the number as giving the camera enough opportunities to move focus across the required depth.
A small flower photographed at high magnification may require considerably more focus positions than a landscape containing a foreground rock and distant mountains.
Depth of field also affects how many you need.
At high magnification, the sharp zone in each photograph can become extremely thin. You may therefore need more overlapping frames.
Rather than searching for one perfect number, ask:
How much depth needs to be covered, and how much of that depth does each frame render acceptably sharp?

What Does Focus Step or Focus Increment Mean?
The focus step determines how aggressively the camera moves the focusing distance between photographs.
Imagine a staircase.
A small step moves you only a short distance each time:
1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5 → 6
A larger step covers the same general direction with bigger jumps:
1 → 3 → 5
Smaller focus increments generally create more overlap between neighboring areas of sharpness.
Larger increments move through the subject more quickly but may leave insufficient overlap.
That distinction matters because gaps between usable focus planes can create areas that remain soft even after stacking.
Practical tip: When detail is critical, err on the side of adequate overlap rather than trying to capture the fewest possible files.
Does a Focus Step of 5 Mean Five Millimeters?
Usually, you should not interpret a focus-step number as a universal physical distance such as five millimeters or five inches.
The effect of a focus increment can depend on the camera system, lens, aperture, focusing distance, magnification, and starting position.
Sony, for example, specifically describes its step-width value as relative and notes that its effect varies with shooting conditions. Nikon similarly describes focus-step width as controlling how much focus distance changes between frames.
That is why copying someone else’s focus-step setting does not guarantee identical results.
Use the value as a relative control, then test how it behaves with your subject and equipment.
Where Should the Focus Bracketing Sequence Start?
Your first focus point matters.
For many close-up subjects, a sensible approach is to start near the closest important detail and let the sequence travel progressively deeper.
Consider a flower angled toward your camera.
Focus first on the nearest petal that needs to appear sharp rather than automatically focusing on the center of the flower.
Starting too far into the subject may leave the nearest detail outside the useful bracket entirely.
Before beginning, identify two boundaries:
Nearest detail that needs sharpness
and
Farthest detail that needs sharpness
Those two points define the depth your bracket needs to cover.
How Does the Camera Know When to Stop?
Your camera doesn’t analyze the artistic success of each photograph and decide, “Everything is sharp enough now.”
Instead, it follows its programmed focus-bracketing behavior.
Depending on the camera, shooting may end because it has captured the selected number of photographs, reached the limit of its focusing range, or met another model-specific condition.
Canon documentation for supported cameras, for example, describes focus-bracketing sequences that progress toward infinity and can end after the specified number of images or at the far end of the focal range. Nikon also documents models that change focus by the chosen amount throughout the selected series.
This matters because you’re still responsible for choosing an appropriate starting position and checking whether the sequence covers your subject.
Does Focus Bracketing Automatically Make One Sharp Photograph?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the most important things to understand before using the feature.
Focus bracketing can leave you with a collection of separate image files such as:
IMG_1001
IMG_1002
IMG_1003
IMG_1004
IMG_1005
Each contains a different area of sharpness.
Depending on your camera and workflow, you may still need to combine those files in focus-stacking software.
Certain cameras offer additional in-camera compositing features, while others primarily automate capture.
Never assume the words Focus Bracketing automatically mean the camera produces a completed stacked image.

What Is Focus Bracketing Called on Different Cameras?
Manufacturers do not use one universal name.
Depending on the camera system and model, you may encounter terminology such as:
- Focus Bracketing
- Focus Shift Shooting
- Focus Shift
- Focus BKT
- Focus Bracket
- Focus Stacking
Canon and Sony use Focus Bracketing terminology on supported models, while Nikon commonly uses Focus Shift Shooting. OM System/Olympus cameras may use Focus BKT or offer related focus-stacking functions.
Always check documentation for your specific model rather than assuming another camera from the same brand behaves identically.
Does Every Camera Have Focus Bracketing?
No.
Automated focus bracketing is a camera feature, not a requirement for doing focus stacking.
Photographers using cameras without the feature can create a manual bracket by carefully changing focus between frames.
A tripod is especially helpful because the camera should stay as still as possible while those focus positions change.
Compatibility can also depend on the lens.
Before buying equipment specifically for automated focus bracketing, confirm that the camera and intended lens combination supports the function you want.
When Is Focus Bracketing Most Useful?
Focus bracketing becomes valuable when a single photograph cannot provide enough depth of field for your creative goal.
Strong candidates include:
- Flowers photographed close to the lens.
- Stationary insects
- Mushrooms
- Jewelry
- Watches
- Food
- Product photography
- Detailed still life arrangements
- Close-up textures
- Landscapes with extremely close foreground elements
- Certain architectural details
Macro photography is particularly well suited because depth of field becomes increasingly shallow as magnification increases.

When Should You Avoid Focus Bracketing?
More sharpness does not automatically create a better photograph.
If selective focus beautifully isolates one detail, stacking everything may actually weaken the image.
Movement presents another challenge.
A flower blowing in the wind can change position between frames. Active insects rarely remain perfectly aligned. Waves, moving leaves, people, pets, and rapidly changing clouds may create inconsistencies throughout the sequence.
Ask yourself three questions before turning the feature on:
Does an important part of my subject fall outside the available depth of field?
Can the important elements remain reasonably still throughout the sequence?
Do I actually want greater front-to-back sharpness?
When the answer to the first or third question is no, a conventional single photograph may be the stronger choice.
Try This Simple Focus Bracketing Exercise
Place three small objects on a table, with each one positioned slightly farther from your camera.
Mount the camera securely.
Choose a moderate aperture and establish your exposure.
Focus on the nearest object, then activate your camera’s focus-bracketing feature.
Start with a conservative focus increment and enough frames to move through all three objects.
After shooting, review the files individually.
Do not stack them yet.
Instead, watch the focus plane travel through the sequence.
Seeing that movement frame by frame teaches you more about the feature than memorizing a menu description.
Once you understand what happened, repeat the exercise with a smaller focus step. Compare how much the neighboring areas of sharpness overlap.
That experiment will help you understand how your camera and lens behave.
Turn Focus Bracketing Into a Creative Tool
Technical understanding should eventually lead back to photography, not endless menu adjustments.
Take the feature outdoors and experiment with flowers, fallen leaves, fungi, textured objects, still-life arrangements, or landscapes with a dramatic foreground.

Check Your Finished Photograph Before Printing
A successful focus stack often contains extraordinary fine detail, which makes print preparation especially important.

Focus Bracketing Is Easier Once You Understand What the Camera Is Doing
Focus bracketing sounds complicated because camera menus reduce a visual process to numbers, increments, intervals, and unfamiliar terminology.
The underlying idea is much simpler.
You choose where the sequence begins.
Your camera captures a photograph.
Focus moves.
Another photograph is recorded.
That process continues across different focusing distances, giving you a collection of frames that can cover more depth than one exposure might manage comfortably.
Remember the simplest rule:
Bracket in the camera. Stack the photographs.
Once that distinction is clear, the other controls start to make sense.
Number of shots determines the potential length of the sequence. Focus increment controls how aggressively focus progresses. Your starting position establishes where coverage begins. The final files give you different planes of sharpness from which to build the finished result.
Most importantly, photographers don’t need focus bracketing for every scene.
It’s a precise tool for moments when one focus distance cannot give the photograph the depth and detail you want.
