Sometimes a photograph is technically in focus but still lacks enough sharp detail.
You may photograph a flower and discover that its nearest petals are crisp while the center has already fallen out of focus. Perhaps a sweeping landscape has beautifully defined foreground rocks, yet the mountains in the distance look slightly soft. Even a carefully arranged tabletop photograph can contain objects positioned at several distances that refuse to become equally sharp.
Closing the aperture may help, but only so far. Focus stacking provides another solution.
Instead of forcing one photograph to carry the entire depth of the scene, you capture several nearly identical frames while moving the point of focus from front to back. Editing software can then combine the sharpest areas into one finished photograph with considerably greater depth of field.
The most important part isn’t learning how to take dozens of exposures. It is learning to recognize when a photograph actually needs a stack.

What Is Focus Stacking in Photography?
Focus stacking combines multiple photographs taken at different focus distances.
Imagine photographing a small flower from very close range.
In the first frame, you might focus on the petal closest to the camera. In the second frame, you move focus slightly deeper into the flower. Photographs gradually continue toward the center and rear petals.
Once you combine those images, the sharp sections from each exposure form one photograph with more front-to-back detail than a single exposure could normally provide.
The same principle can be applied to:
- Flowers
- Insects that remain completely still
- Mushrooms
- Jewelry
- Watches
- Food
- Product photography
- Still life
- Landscapes
- Architecture
- Textured objects
- Detailed nature photographs
Focus stacking is especially useful when important parts of a stationary subject fall across several focal planes.
Why Not Just Use a Smaller Aperture?
The obvious question is why you would not simply choose f/16 or f/22 and make more of the scene appear sharp.
Sometimes you can.
Stopping down increases depth of field, which is why apertures such as f/8 and f/11 are common starting points when greater front-to-back sharpness matters.
Extremely small apertures introduce another consideration, however: diffraction.
As the aperture becomes very small, fine detail can gradually lose crispness. The precise point at which this becomes noticeable varies with the camera, lens, output size, and viewing conditions.
More importantly, a tiny aperture still may not provide enough depth of field for an extreme close-up.
Suppose you are photographing a flower at high magnification. Even at f/11, the front petal and rear petal may sit too far apart in depth to appear equally sharp.
Focus stacking lets you shoot at an aperture where the lens performs well while expanding apparent depth through several exposures.
Practical tip: Before deciding to stack, make one test photograph at f/8 or f/11. Check the nearest and farthest details at high magnification. If everything important is already acceptably sharp, there is little reason to create extra work.
Know When Focus Stacking Is Actually Worth Using
Not every photograph becomes better because everything is sharp.
Selective focus can be one of photography’s most beautiful tools. A sharp flower surrounded by softness may have far more impact than the same flower rendered in perfect detail from front to back.
Use focus stacking when additional sharpness serves the photograph rather than becoming its purpose.
Good candidates include a macro subject with several important layers, a landscape containing a very close foreground element and distant scenery, or a carefully arranged product photograph where every important surface needs clarity.
Skip the technique when the background should remain soft, your subject is moving, the wind is changing the scene between exposures, or one conventional frame already gives you enough depth.
Think of focus stacking as another form of depth-of-field control.
You are deciding where sharpness should exist rather than simply trying to maximize it.

Start With a Stable Subject
Movement creates one of the biggest problems in focus stacking.
Each photograph needs to align closely with the others. When a flower bends between exposures, an insect changes position, or leaves blow across the frame, the stacking software has to reconcile details that no longer occupy the same place.
Choose something stationary when learning.
Indoor still-life subjects are excellent practice because you control nearly everything.
Try:
- A flower in a vase
- A pinecone
- Jewelry
- A watch
- A textured shell
- A small figurine
- Food
- Coins
- Art supplies
Once the process becomes familiar, move outdoors and tackle more complicated subjects.
Use a Tripod Whenever Precision Matters
Some cameras and software support handheld focus stacking, but a tripod makes the process much more predictable.
Compose the photograph first.
After framing the subject, lock the tripod position and avoid changing focal length or moving the camera between exposures.
Small shifts can alter perspective and make blending harder, especially in macro photography.
A remote shutter release or the camera’s short self-timer can reduce unnecessary vibration. Some cameras also support electronic shutter modes that further minimize movement during a carefully controlled sequence.

Choose Camera Settings That Stay Consistent
Consistency makes stacking easier.
Manual exposure is especially useful because brightness shouldn’t change unexpectedly from one frame to the next.
For a stationary subject on a tripod, a useful starting setup is:
Exposure mode: Manual
Aperture: f/5.6 to f/11
ISO: 100 to 400 when light permits
White balance: Fixed rather than Auto
File format: RAW
Focus: Manual focus or automated focus bracketing
Shutter speed: Adjust according to available light
Those numbers are starting points, not rules.
Macro photographers may choose an aperture around f/5.6 or f/8 and build greater depth with more frames. Landscape photographers may need only two or three strategically focused exposures at f/8 or f/11.
Keeping white balance fixed helps prevent subtle color shifts between otherwise identical frames.
Focus From the Nearest Important Detail to the Farthest
Once you lock the composition and exposure, identify the first detail that needs to be sharp.
Focus there and make the first exposure.
Next, move the focus slightly farther into the scene and take another photograph.
Continue until you have passed the farthest detail that needs sharpness.
The key word is slightly.
Large gaps between focus positions can leave thin soft zones that no frame captures sharply. Excessive overlap, on the other hand, may produce far more files than you need.
Overlap your sharp areas generously.
Experience will teach you how large each focus step can be for a particular lens, aperture, magnification, and subject.
How Many Photos Do You Need for Focus Stacking?
There is no universal number.
A landscape might need two or three exposures.
A flower photographed at moderate magnification could require five, eight, or twelve.
Extreme macro work may involve dozens or considerably more.
Instead of deciding in advance that you need a particular number of photographs, examine the depth of the subject.
Ask three questions:
- Where does the first important detail begin?
- Where does the last important detail end?
- How narrow is the sharp zone in each frame?
Your answer determines the stack.
This “smallest effective stack” approach also keeps editing manageable.
More files are not automatically better.
Focus Stacking for Macro Photography
Macro photography is where the technique becomes especially powerful.
As magnification increases, depth of field can become extremely shallow. A tiny change in distance may move an important detail beyond the sharp zone.
For a flower, begin with the nearest petal that matters and gradually work toward the rear.
When photographing a stationary insect, the nearest eye or antenna may become the first plane, followed by the head, thorax, wings, and other important structures.
Unfortunately, living subjects rarely stay perfectly motionless.
Early mornings sometimes provide better opportunities because cooler conditions can reduce insect activity, although you should always work without disturbing or stressing the subject.

Focus Stacking for Landscapes
Landscape focus stacking usually requires fewer frames than macro work.
Consider a composition containing flowers or rocks just a few feet from the camera, a middle-distance lake, and mountains on the horizon.
One exposure might prioritize the foreground.
Another can focus around the middle distance.
A final frame may concentrate on the distant landscape.
Blending those exposures creates substantial depth without requiring the lens to be stopped down excessively.
Before stacking, however, think about composition.
Depth does not come solely from sharpness. Overlapping objects, foreground placement, scale, leading lines, atmospheric perspective, and separation between visual layers all help a two-dimensional photograph feel spacious.

Watch for Wind, Water, Clouds and Other Movement
A perfectly stable camera does not guarantee a perfectly stable scene.
Leaves move.
Clouds travel.
Water changes shape.
Grass bends.
Reflections shift.
Shadows can even change during a long sequence.
Before creating a large stack, watch the scene for several seconds.
If movement is frequent, you may be better off using fewer exposures, waiting for calmer conditions, increasing shutter speed, or accepting selective softness.
Complicated stacks are not always the most successful stacks.

How to Combine Focus-Stacked Photos
After shooting, import the full sequence into editing software that can align and blend photos based on sharpness.
Common focus-stacking applications include Photoshop, Capture One Pro, and Skylum Luminar Neo.
The precise commands differ, but the basic workflow remains similar:
- Process the source files consistently.
- Send or load the sequence as layers or a stack.
- Align the photographs.
- Blend the sharpest areas.
- Inspect the result closely.
- Correct blending errors if necessary.
- Crop edges created by alignment.
- Apply final color and sharpening adjustments.
Do not judge the result only at fit-to-screen size.
Zoom in around overlapping edges, fine hairs, flower petals, stems, reflective surfaces, and detailed backgrounds.
Those areas frequently reveal blending problems first.
Avoid the “Everything Must Be Sharp” Trap
Focus stacking can become addictive.
Once you discover that extraordinary depth is possible, the temptation is to make every visible object razor sharp.
That can weaken a photograph.
Our eyes still need hierarchy.
If the subject and background receive the same visual emphasis, a carefully composed photograph can start to feel flat or overly clinical.
Decide what deserves detail.
Perhaps the flower should be sharp throughout while the garden behind it remains soft. The foreground rock and distant mountain may need clarity, but a distracting branch at the edge does not.
Successful focus stacking should look intentional, not just technically impressive.
Common Focus Stacking Mistakes
Moving the Camera Between Frames
Even slight repositioning changes perspective.
Lock down your composition whenever possible.
Leaving Gaps Between Focus Points
Each frame needs enough overlap with the next to prevent soft bands in the final blend.
Changing Exposure Midway
Brightness differences make a seamless result harder to produce. Manual exposure helps maintain consistency.
Using Too Many Frames
More photographs increase processing work and provide more opportunities for movement or blending errors.
Capture what you need.
Ignoring Subject Movement
A stack can fail even when your camera remains perfectly still.
Study flowers, grasses, water, clouds, insects, and other moving details before starting.
Stopping the Lens Down Too Far
A tiny aperture is not automatically the sharpest choice.
Use a sensible aperture, and let the stack provide extra depth when needed.
Stacking When One Photograph Would Work
Always make a conventional test exposure first.
Simple solutions are often the strongest ones.
Try This Easy Focus Stacking Exercise
Place three small objects on a table, positioning one close to the camera, another several inches behind it, and a third farther away.
Set the camera on a tripod.
Choose approximately f/5.6 or f/8, then create three photographs:
- Frame one focused on the nearest object
- Frame two focused on the middle object
- Frame three focused on the farthest object
Compare those individual images with the finished stack.
This simple experiment makes the principle immediately visible without wind, insects, changing sunlight, or other outdoor complications.
Afterward, repeat the exercise with a flower.
You will quickly begin recognizing situations where focus stacking offers a genuine advantage.
Prepare a Focus-Stacked Photograph for Printing
Extra detail becomes particularly noticeable when a photograph moves from a small screen to a larger print.

Focus-stacked images can be especially rewarding to print because subtle textures and fine details become far easier to appreciate at a larger viewing size.
Focus stacking is not simply a technique for making everything sharper.
Its real value comes from giving you another way to control depth of field when a single exposure cannot place every important detail within an acceptable focus range.
Start.
Choose a stationary subject, stabilize the camera, keep the exposure consistent, and move focus gradually from the nearest important detail toward the farthest.
Most importantly, stop when you have enough.
A three-frame landscape stack can be more successful than twenty unnecessary exposures. Likewise, a flower doesn’t need every background leaf rendered sharply just because the software can.
Sharpness should support the subject, composition, and story.
Once you think about focus stacking this way, the technique becomes more than an editing trick. It becomes another creative decision you can use to determine exactly where the viewer’s attention travels through the photograph.
