When a photograph needs more front-to-back detail, two solutions usually come to mind: closing the aperture or capturing several focus points and blending them later.
Both methods can work beautifully. Neither is automatically sharper in every situation.
A small aperture gives you more depth of field in one exposure, making it fast and practical when subjects move. Focus stacking works differently. Instead of asking one frame to keep everything acceptably sharp, it combines the sharpest areas from several photos taken at different focus distances.
The better choice depends on the subject, the scene’s depth, movement, final output size, and how much editing you want to do.

The Real Question Is Detail, Not Just Depth of Field
It is easy to assume that the aperture producing the most depth of field must also produce the sharpest photograph.
Stopping down from f/4 to f/8 or f/11 usually increases the range that appears acceptably sharp. Continue closing the aperture, though, and diffraction gradually becomes more important. Light passing through a very small opening spreads slightly, which can soften fine detail across the frame.
Focus stacking avoids relying on the smallest aperture for depth. You can work closer to an aperture that gives strong optical detail, then extend apparent sharpness by combining several focus planes.
Think of the decision as a sharpness trade-off. A small aperture sacrifices some potential crispness to gain depth in one exposure. Focus stacking uses more time, storage, stability, and editing to preserve detail across several exposures.
When a Small Aperture Is the Better Choice
A small aperture wins when simplicity matters more than maximum pixel-level detail.
Suppose you are photographing a landscape with nothing extremely close to the lens. At f/8 or f/11, careful focusing may already keep the important foreground and distant elements acceptably sharp. Creating a stack would add work without producing a meaningful improvement.
Movement also favors a single exposure. Leaves blowing, grasses swaying, water changing shape, people walking, or insects shifting position can create problems between frames.
Small apertures are especially practical for travel, street scenes, handheld work, architecture, and landscapes where the important elements already fit comfortably within one frame’s depth of field.
Practical tip: Before committing to a stack, make one carefully focused frame at f/8 or f/11. Check the nearest and farthest important details. If both look convincingly sharp at the size you intend to use the photograph, stop there.
More technique doesn’t automatically mean higher quality.
When Focus Stacking Produces the Sharper Result
Focus stacking becomes more valuable when the scene asks for more depth than one exposure can provide cleanly.
Macro photography is the clearest example. At high magnification, depth of field can become so narrow that a flower’s front petal is sharp while its center and rear petals are already soft. Closing from f/8 to f/16 may help, yet it still might not cover the entire subject.
A well-made stack can preserve fine texture across several planes without depending on an extremely small aperture.
Near-far landscapes create a similar problem. Imagine a rock or wildflower close to the camera with mountains on the horizon. Two or three strategically focused frames at f/8 or f/11 may give the foreground and distance cleaner detail than forcing everything into one exposure.

Focus Stacking Does Not Mean Everything Must Be Sharp
One of the easiest mistakes is treating maximum sharpness as the goal of every photograph.
A photograph can be technically sharp and visually dull.
In macro work, a soft background may separate a flower from clutter. In a landscape, atmospheric softness can make distant mountains feel farther away. Selective focus can guide attention more effectively than making every leaf and pebble equally crisp.
Before stacking, decide what actually needs detail. Perhaps the nearest petal and flower center matter, but the rear garden should remain soft.
That decision often reduces the number of frames you need and produces a more intentional image.

Macro Photography: Small Aperture or Focus Stack?
For a stationary macro subject, begin around f/5.6 to f/8 and inspect how much of the subject falls within the sharp zone.
If important details extend beyond that area, create a stack before jumping immediately to f/16 or f/22.
Camera angle matters too. A flower photographed straight-on may need only one frame because many petals sit near the same focal plane. Tilt the same flower toward the camera and the front-to-back distance increases, making stacking more useful.
When the subject is moving, reverse the priority. A sharp single exposure at f/11 can be more successful than a 20-frame stack ruined by shifting petals.
Practical tip: Use the fewest frames that give continuous overlap from the nearest required detail to the farthest. Extra exposures create more opportunities for movement and alignment problems.
Landscape Photography: Do Not Stop Down Automatically
Landscape photographers often reach for f/16 because they want everything from foreground to horizon in focus.
Sometimes that works. Often, f/8 or f/11 already provides enough usable depth.
The important factor is the distance between the camera and the nearest meaningful foreground element. As that foreground moves closer, maintaining one-frame depth becomes harder.
Use a simple approach. If nothing important sits very close to the lens, try one frame at f/8 or f/11. When the foreground is extremely close, and the distant background also needs great detail, capture a small stack.
Three precise frames can be better than twenty unnecessary ones.

What About f/16 and f/22?
Neither aperture is forbidden.
Problems begin when the smallest aperture becomes an automatic response to every scene requiring depth.
Photograph a stationary subject at f/8, f/11, f/16, and f/22 if your lens offers it. Keep the focus point and camera position fixed. Compare fine texture near the focus point and the overall depth.
You may find that f/16 offers the best compromise for one image, while an f/8 stack clearly wins for another.
Testing your own camera and lens is more useful than memorizing a rule from someone else’s equipment.
Focus Stacking Has Its Own Sharpness Problems
Stacking is not immune to softness.
Poor technique can make a stack look worse than a clean single frame. Common causes include camera movement, missed focus intervals, changing exposure, subject movement, focus breathing, alignment problems, and blending artifacts around fine edges.
Keep the camera stable and exposure consistent throughout the sequence. Allow enough overlap between focus positions so no thin band falls between two sharp frames.

A Fast Field Test: Which Method Should You Use?
Ask five questions before you take the photograph.
Is the subject moving?
Choose one exposure unless movement is slow enough to control.
Is the nearest important detail extremely close to the lens?
Stacking becomes more useful as near-to-far distance increases.
Will the photograph be viewed or printed large?
Larger output reveals fine softness more readily.
Does f/8 to f/11 already cover everything important?
If yes, one frame is usually the cleaner workflow.
Would stacking improve the finished photograph enough to justify the extra work?
If not, keep it simple.
This quick test prevents focus stacking from becoming a habit when it should remain a solution.
Try a Side-by-Side Sharpness Experiment
Choose a stationary subject with noticeable depth, such as a flower angled toward the camera or a landscape with a nearby foreground object.
First, capture one frame at f/16. Next, keep the composition fixed, switch to approximately f/8, and create a short focus stack from front to back.
Blend the stack, then compare both photographs at the same magnification.
Check tiny surface detail, transitions between focus planes, and any blending artifacts. The technically sharper version may not be the version you prefer visually.

Preparing a Sharp Photograph for Print
The difference between a small-aperture frame and a focus stack may become easier to see when you print a photograph large.

Focus Stacking vs Small Aperture: Which Is Sharper?
For a stationary subject with significant depth, focus stacking usually offers greater potential for fine front-to-back detail because it combines several sharp focus planes without depending on an extremely small aperture.
For moving subjects, fast-changing scenes, handheld work, and compositions already covered adequately at f/8 to f/11, a single small-aperture exposure is often the smarter choice.
The best technique solves the actual problem in front of your camera.
Do not stop down simply because you want more sharpness. Do not stack simply because your camera can.
Start by deciding which parts of the photograph truly need detail. Test whether one frame can deliver it. When a single exposure reaches its practical limit, use focus stacking deliberately.
That approach gives you something more valuable than maximum sharpness.
It gives you control.
