One of the first questions photographers ask after learning about focus stacking is surprisingly simple:
How many photos do I actually need?
Should you take three? Ten? Twenty? Fifty?
One photographer may combine five frames to photograph a flower, while another uses dozens of exposures for a tiny macro subject.
The number itself doesn’t determine whether a focus stack works.
What matters is whether your photographs provide continuous sharp coverage from the nearest detail you want in focus to the farthest detail you want in focus.
That distinction can save you from two common problems: taking too few photographs and leaving soft gaps, or capturing far more files than the final image requires.
Instead of choosing an arbitrary frame count before you begin, use the subject, magnification, aperture, and focus-step size to determine how large your stack actually needs to be.

The Short Answer: How Many Photos Do You Need for Focus Stacking?
For many situations, these ranges provide a useful starting point:
| Subject | Possible Starting Range |
| Landscape with close foreground | 2 to 5 photos |
| Still life or product | 3 to 10 photos |
| Close-up flower | 5 to 15 photos |
| Detailed macro subject | 10 to 30+ photos |
| High-magnification macro | 30 to 100+ photos |
| Extreme macro | 50 to several hundred photos |
These are starting ranges, not requirements.
A relatively flat flower could need only four photographs. Another bloom angled toward the camera might require twelve.
Likewise, a landscape with foreground flowers inches from the lens and mountains in the distance may require several focus positions, while another landscape can be captured sharply in one exposure.
The goal should always be the same:
Use enough photographs to cover the required depth without collecting unnecessary frames.
Why Focus Stacking Frame Counts Vary So Much
Frame count depends largely on how much depth each photograph can render acceptably sharp.
Several factors change that depth.
Magnification
Magnification is one of the biggest reasons macro stacks become so large.
As you move closer to a subject and increase magnification, depth of field becomes extremely shallow. Only a thin slice of the subject may appear sharp in each photograph.
That means you need smaller focus changes between exposures, which naturally increases the number of photographs.
Subject Depth
Consider two flowers.
One is photographed directly from above, so most petals are about the same distance from the camera.
The other points toward the lens, with its nearest petal significantly closer than the rear petals.
Even if both flowers are the same size, the second arrangement requires considerably more front-to-back focus coverage.
Always evaluate depth along the camera-to-subject axis, rather than judging the subject by its physical size alone.
Aperture
Stopping the lens down increases depth of field within each exposure, which can sometimes reduce the required number of frames.
Choosing the smallest available aperture to reduce your stack is rarely the best strategy.
Very small apertures can introduce diffraction and reduce fine detail.
A better approach is to choose an aperture that gives you strong image quality and useful depth of field, then let stacking add sharpness.

Think in Focus Zones Instead of Photographs
Here is one of the easiest ways to improve your focus stacking.
Imagine photographing a flower from the side.
Your important zones might include:
- The nearest petal
- Front-center petals
- The flower’s center
- Rear-center petals
- The farthest petal
That doesn’t automatically mean you need exactly five frames, because individual depth-of-field zones may overlap.
Your first photograph might cover most of zones one and two. Another could cover two and three. Later images continue progressively through the flower.
What matters is that one zone of useful sharpness overlaps the next.
Think of it almost like laying tiles across a floor. Small overlaps are fine. Gaps are the problem.
The Most Useful Rule: Look for Overlap
Soft gaps usually happen when focus moves too far between exposures.
Suppose the first image clearly captures the front edge of a leaf.
Your next exposure focuses noticeably farther back, but the sharp region from the first photo doesn’t reach the sharp region of the second.
Stacking software cannot invent genuinely sharp detail that was never photographed.
A narrow blurry strip may remain.
Using smaller focus increments gives your software overlapping information from neighboring photographs and generally makes blending easier.
There is a tradeoff, though.
Extremely tiny focus changes can produce a huge sequence containing many nearly redundant photographs.
For most situations, a comfortable overlap is better than the maximum possible number of frames.
A Simple Way to Determine Your Frame Count in the Field
You do not need a complicated mathematical formula.
Try this practical method.
Step 1: Find the Nearest Detail That Must Be Sharp
Do not automatically focus on the physically closest object in the composition.
Choose the nearest detail that actually matters to the finished photograph.
A distracting twig extending toward the camera may not need to be sharp.
Step 2: Identify the Farthest Important Detail
Now look toward the rear of the subject.
Where does required sharpness end?
For a flower, that might be the final rear petal.
For a product, it might be the back edge of a watch.
For a landscape, the final focus requirement may be a distant tree line or mountain.
Step 3: Begin at the Near Point
Capture your first frame with the nearest important area in sharp focus.
Step 4: Move Focus Gradually Deeper
Shift the focusing distance slightly farther into the subject and take another photograph.
Continue progressing through the scene.
Step 5: Stop After You Pass the Far Point
Once you’ve comfortably covered the farthest important detail, you’re finished.
Taking another 40 photographs beyond it will not make the useful part of the stack sharper.
An extra insurance frame just beyond your final intended focus point can be worthwhile, particularly when working at high magnification.
How Many Photos for Macro Focus Stacking?
Macro photography is where frame counts increase quickly.
A moderate close-up of a flower could require fewer than ten exposures.
Move closer, increase magnification, and photograph something with significant three-dimensional structure, and the required number can increase dramatically.
An insect head, seed pod, mushroom, watch mechanism, or textured mineral may require dozens of focus positions.
Extreme macro photographs can require substantially more.
Instead of relying on someone else’s number, pay attention to how narrow the sharp zone appears in each of your own frames.
When that zone becomes extremely thin, reduce your focus-step size.

How Many Photos for Landscape Focus Stacking?
Landscape stacking usually requires far fewer photographs than macro work.
Often, only two to five carefully chosen focus positions are necessary.
For example:
Frame 1: nearby flowers or rocks
Frame 2: middle-distance landscape
Frame 3: distant scenery
Some compositions may need one or two additional positions, especially when the foreground sits extremely close to a wide-angle lens.
Don’t assume every landscape needs stacking.
A suitable aperture and carefully selected focusing distance may already provide enough depth of field.
Composition matters too. A photograph can feel dimensional without every object being perfectly sharp.

How Many Photos for Product and Still Life Photography?
Controlled indoor subjects are ideal for learning how to judge frame count.
Jewelry, watches, food, flowers, crafts, collectibles, and tabletop arrangements stay relatively still, allowing you to work methodically.
Begin by evaluating how deep the subject is from the camera’s perspective.
A flat coin may not need stacking at all.
Photograph the same coin at an angle, and its nearest edge and farthest edge suddenly occupy noticeably different focus planes.
A product stack might use five photographs in one composition and fifteen after changing the camera angle.
This is why establishing a fixed number before composing the photograph can work against you.
Let the composition determine the stack.
What Happens If You Take Too Few Photos?
Too few exposures can produce:
- Soft strips between focus planes
- Partially blurred textures
- Missing details
- Difficult blending
- Uneven sharpness
- Areas stacking software cannot repair cleanly
If you repeatedly notice narrow bands of softness, make your focus increments smaller during the next sequence.
Don’t assume the software failed immediately.
Sometimes the missing detail was never sharply recorded in any source image.
Can You Take Too Many Focus Stacking Photos?
Yes.
Taking more photographs than necessary usually will not ruin the sequence, but it can make your workflow unnecessarily heavy.
Large stacks create:
- More RAW files
- Larger storage requirements
- Longer imports
- Increased processing time
- More opportunities for subject movement
- More chances for lighting changes
- Additional alignment and blending work
If 12 photographs provide complete coverage, capturing 75 almost-identical exposures offers little practical benefit.
This is especially important outdoors.
A stationary flower can move between photographs when a breeze arrives. Light may change. An insect might reposition itself.
A smaller, efficient stack can sometimes succeed where an unnecessarily long sequence fails.
What If Your Camera Has Automatic Focus Bracketing?
Automatic focus bracketing can make long sequences considerably easier.
Instead of adjusting focus manually after every exposure, the camera moves the focus position progressively between photographs.
Two settings deserve particular attention:
Number of shots controls how many frames the camera can capture.
Focus increment, or step width, controls how much the focusing distance changes between photographs.
Terminology varies by camera manufacturer and model.
When photographers confuse those controls, they sometimes increase the number of shots when the real problem is a focus step that is too large.

Try the Two-Stack Test
One of the fastest ways to find the right frame count for your equipment is to photograph the same stationary subject twice.
For the first sequence, use relatively wider focus changes.
During the second sequence, make noticeably smaller adjustments and capture more photographs.
Stack both versions.
Then compare:
- Fine textures
- Subject edges
- Transition zones
- Small details
- Blending artifacts
- Processing time
You may discover that the first sequence contains gaps.
The second may contain far more frames than necessary.
Your ideal setting is somewhere between them.
This test is especially useful because camera systems, lenses, working distances, magnifications, and subjects differ.
Experience with your own equipment becomes more valuable than memorizing somebody else’s favorite number.

Useful Gear for More Consistent Stacks
Focus stacking does not require a huge collection of accessories.
Consistency matters more.
Depending on the type of subjects you photograph, useful equipment can include a tripod, macro focusing rail, remote shutter release, continuous LED light, flash, and a lens suited to your working distance.

Turn Focus Stacking Into a Creative Exercise
Technical practice becomes much easier when you have something interesting to photograph.
Try stacking late-season flowers, seed heads, small autumn leaves, food details, jewelry, shells, feathers, crystals, or household objects.

Keep a simple note of the subject, aperture, approximate magnification, frame count, and whether the final stack had enough coverage.
You may discover that your typical flower photographs need around eight frames, while your higher-magnification work routinely needs twenty or more.
That personal information is much more useful than a universal number.

After completing a detailed focus stack, viewing the photograph only on a screen can hide important questions about output size and resolution.

So, How Many Photos Should You Take?
The best focus stack isn’t the one with the most photographs.
It is the one containing enough photographs.
A landscape may need three.
A flower might need eight.
A detailed macro photograph could require thirty.
Extreme magnification may push the sequence into dozens or hundreds of exposures.
Rather than choosing the number first, find the nearest important focus point, locate the farthest one, and create overlapping areas of sharpness between them.
Stop once that entire distance has been covered.
If you find blurry gaps, reduce the focus step.
When dozens of neighboring files appear almost identical, you may be using unnecessarily small steps.
That is the real answer to how many photos you need for focus stacking:
As few as possible, but as many as necessary to create continuous sharp coverage.
Once you start thinking about coverage instead of frame count, focus stacking becomes much easier to control, predict, and repeat.
