You carefully adjust the autofocus mode, ISO range, white balance, file format, and button assignments. Everything works correctly during the shoot. Later, you turn the camera on and discover that several choices have returned to their previous values.
Sometimes only one control changes. In other cases, the camera appears to forget an entire setup.
A camera that resets its settings is not necessarily broken. Many apparent resets occur because the camera is recalling a saved custom mode, returning temporary adjustments to their registered values, switching to an automatic exposure mode, or applying settings that belong only to a particular photo or video configuration.
Power problems, firmware updates, an internal clock battery, and accidental menu commands can also erase or alter settings.

Your camera may reset its settings because:

Some Adjustments Are Designed to Be Temporary
Not every camera control is intended to remain active indefinitely.
Exposure compensation is a good example. Certain cameras retain the selected compensation after being switched off, while others return it to zero depending on the exposure mode or custom settings.
Temporary controls may include:

- Flash compensation
- A recalled autofocus area
- Hold-button functions
