Learn the Main Controls

Beside it, the exposure compensation dial brightens or darkens the photograph without opening a menu. Positive values increase brightness, and negative values reduce it.
The lens control ring can adjust aperture or shutter speed, depending on the mode, while the rear wheel changes additional options.
Press the shutter halfway to focus and meter the light, then press fully after the focus box confirms the subject. The surrounding lever controls the zoom.
Choose the Right Shooting Mode
Auto mode works well while learning the physical controls or when you need a quick photograph.
Program mode (P) keeps exposure automatic while letting you adjust ISO, white balance, exposure compensation, focus behavior, and other settings.
Aperture Priority (Av) is the most useful next step for many photographers. You select the f-number, and the camera chooses a matching shutter speed. Try f/1.8 to f/2.8 for low light or a softer background, f/4 for general use, and f/5.6 to f/8 when more of the scene should appear sharp.
Shutter Priority (Tv) controls how motion is rendered. Use about 1/500 second for active children or street movement, 1/250 second for casual action, and 1/60 second or slower when you intentionally want blur.
Manual mode (M) gives you direct control of aperture and shutter speed. It works best when the light remains consistent, such as for tabletop work or tripod-mounted evening scenes.
Understand Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO
Aperture changes brightness and depth of field. Lower f-numbers admit more light and can soften the background. Higher f-numbers increase the range that appears sharp.
Shutter speed controls how long the sensor receives light. Fast speeds freeze action, while slower speeds record movement and increase the chance of camera shake.
ISO helps the camera work in dimmer conditions. Lower values generally produce cleaner files, while higher values enable faster shutter speeds but can introduce visible noise.
Begin with Auto ISO and watch the shutter speed. For stationary people, aim for roughly 1/125 second or faster. Walking subjects often need about 1/250 second, while quicker movement may require 1/500 second or above.

Focus More Accurately
Face detection and tracking are useful for portraits, family photographs, and casual video. Tap the correct face when the camera selects the wrong person.
One-point autofocus provides more precision for food, flowers, products, architecture, and other still subjects. Move the focus point directly over the detail that must appear sharp.
Use Servo AF for subjects moving toward or away from the camera. In dim light, aim at a contrasting edge, such as an eye, a window frame, or a printed word, rather than a plain surface.

Use the 24–100mm Zoom Creatively
At 24mm, the lens works well for interiors, group photographs, architecture, and travel scenes. Wide-angle framing includes more context, but faces can stretch near the edges. Keep people away from the extreme corners and avoid placing the camera too close to a face.
Around 35mm to 50mm, the perspective feels natural for food, street photography, and everyday storytelling.
Between 70mm and 100mm, the lens becomes more flattering for portraits and useful for details or compressed city scenes. Step farther back and zoom in instead of moving very close at 24mm.
Photograph one subject at 24mm, 50mm, and 100mm, adjusting your position to keep its size similar. The comparison will reveal how focal length changes perspective and background.
Improve Exposure With the Histogram
The rear screen can be misleading outdoors, so use the histogram to judge tones. Data pressed against the right edge may indicate lost highlights, while heavy concentration against the left can signal blocked shadows.
Turn the exposure compensation dial toward a negative value when bright areas lose detail. Move it toward a positive value when a backlit subject appears too dark. Begin with one-third of a stop, review the result, and adjust again only when necessary.

Select Movie mode before adjusting video settings. For stronger results, prioritize lighting, focus, steady framing, and clear sound.
Use the wide end of the lens for handheld self-recording. The tilting touchscreen helps you check composition when the camera faces you. Position the lens near eye level, avoid a bright window directly behind your face, and choose a quiet location.
For steadier clips, use both hands, keep your elbows near your torso, and move slowly. A compact tripod or grip helps with talking videos and fixed scenes.
Recording several short clips is usually more practical than filming one long take. Short sections are easier to review, replace, and arrange during editing.
Follow a Simple Practice Plan
Start in Auto mode and practice holding the camera, focusing with a half-press, zooming, and reviewing images.
Next, choose Program mode and test exposure compensation on bright, dark, and backlit scenes. Move to Aperture Priority and compare f/1.8, f/2.8, f/4, and f/8. Then use Shutter Priority for movement at 1/60, 1/250, and 1/500 second.

A photograph can look sharp on the camera screen and still print too soft, dark, or dull. File format, pixel dimensions, resolution, sharpening, color space, paper, and final size all influence the result.
