Have you ever photographed a snowy landscape only to find that the snow looked dull and gray? Perhaps you captured someone standing in front of a bright window, but their face appeared much darker than expected. These problems do not always mean that you chose the wrong camera settings.
Sometimes, the camera’s light meter simply interprets the scene differently from the way you want it to look.
Exposure compensation gives you a quick way to correct that interpretation. Instead of switching to full Manual mode or changing several settings individually, you can tell the camera to make the photograph brighter or darker.

What Is Exposure Compensation in Photography?
Exposure compensation is a camera control that adjusts the exposure the camera’s light meter recommends.
Positive exposure compensation makes the photograph brighter. Negative exposure compensation makes it darker.
Most cameras display the control using a plus and minus symbol:

You may find it on a dedicated dial, a button, a command wheel, the quick menu, or the camera’s touchscreen. Fujifilm cameras frequently include a physical exposure compensation dial, while many Canon, Nikon, and Sony models use a button combined with a control dial.
Exposure compensation does not simply brighten or darken a finished image like an editing slider. It changes the exposure settings the camera uses when the photograph is recorded.

Why Cameras Sometimes Get Exposure Wrong

What Do EV and Stops Mean?
Exposure compensation is measured in EV, which stands for exposure value. Cameras commonly allow adjustments in one-third-stop increments.
You may see values such as:
- +0.3 EV
- +0.7 EV
- +1 EV
- -0.3 EV
- -0.7 EV
- -1 EV
Increasing the setting to +1 EV gives the image one stop more exposure, effectively doubling the amount of exposure compared with the camera’s original recommendation.
Reducing it to -1 EV gives the image one stop less exposure, effectively cutting the exposure in half.
Smaller adjustments are often all that is needed. A change of +0.3 EV may gently brighten a face, while -0.7 EV can restore richer color to a bright sky.
Think of zero as the camera’s recommended exposure. Moving toward the plus side creates a brighter result, while moving toward the minus side creates a darker result.
How Exposure Compensation Changes Camera Settings
The exposure compensation setting depends on the shooting mode you are using.
Aperture Priority Mode
In Aperture Priority, you choose the aperture and the camera selects the shutter speed. Adding positive compensation usually causes the camera to use a slower shutter speed. Negative compensation generally produces a faster shutter speed.
Auto ISO may also change, depending on your camera and menu settings.

Program Mode

Manual Mode
Exposure compensation behaves differently in Manual mode.

Manual mode with Auto ISO is different. On many current cameras, exposure compensation changes the automatically selected ISO while you retain control over aperture and shutter speed.

- Turn the compensation control toward plus to brighten the image.
- Move it toward minus to darken the image.
- Take a test photograph.
- Check the histogram and highlight warnings.

The rear screen can help, but its brightness may change with ambient light. A photograph can look acceptable on a bright display and still contain clipped highlights or blocked shadows.

Check the Histogram
The histogram shows how tones are distributed from dark on the left to bright on the right.
A graph touching the right edge may indicate clipped highlights. Heavy contact with the left edge can mean lost shadow detail.
Not every histogram needs to sit perfectly in the center. A night scene naturally leans left, while a snowy scene often leans right. What matters is whether important detail has disappeared.
Use Highlight Warnings
Highlight warnings, sometimes called blinkies, flash over areas that may be overexposed. Zebra patterns offer a similar warning on cameras that support them.
Small clipped reflections may not be important. Blown highlights across a face, wedding dress, flower petal, cloud, or white bird deserve closer attention.
Study the Subject
Technical tools support your judgment, but they should not replace it. Ask whether the photograph faithfully represents the scene and whether the subject has the level of detail you want.
Exposure Compensation Does Not Replace Good Lighting
Exposure compensation changes overall brightness. It cannot remove harsh shadows, reduce extreme contrast, or create flattering light where none exists.

RAW files provide valuable flexibility, but they do not make exposure irrelevant. Completely clipped highlights may contain no usable detail, while severely brightened shadows can reveal noise and color problems.
Getting close to the desired exposure in-camera gives you:

- Better highlight protection
- More accurate previews
- Stronger JPEG files
- Less editing time
