You look up and see an incredible Moon filled with craters, shadows, texture, and subtle variations in brightness. Then you photograph it and discover something completely different on the camera screen.
Instead of lunar detail, you have a glowing white circle.
If you have ever wondered, “Why is the Moon overexposed in my photos?”, the problem usually is not the Moon, your lens, or even your camera. The camera has been asked to meter one of photography’s most unusual lighting situations: an extremely bright subject surrounded by an enormous area of darkness.
Your eyes can appreciate both the Moon and the night sky at the same time. A camera doesn’t interpret that contrast quite the same way.
Fortunately, an overexposed Moon is one of the easier night-photography problems to diagnose once you understand how the camera reacts.
Here is how to recognize the cause and correct it before the lunar surface turns into a featureless white disk.

The Moon Is Much Brighter Than the Night Sky Makes It Look
Nighttime creates a powerful visual illusion.
Because everything surrounding the Moon is dark, photographers often assume the Moon itself needs a long exposure. In reality, an ordinary bright Moon is illuminated directly by sunlight.
That means the lunar surface can require a surprisingly short exposure.
Point a camera toward a mostly black sky in automatic or semi-automatic mode, and the meter may try to brighten the overall frame. Since the Moon occupies only a small portion of that frame, the camera can give far more exposure than the lunar surface needs.
The result is familiar:
- Craters disappear
- Surface texture vanishes
- Gray tones become white
- The edge of the Moon may appear to glow
- Highlights become impossible to recover
Think of the Moon as a bright subject photographed at night, rather than a dark nighttime subject.
That distinction changes your entire exposure strategy.
Your Camera May Be Metering the Black Sky Instead of the Moon
Metering is one of the biggest reasons Moon photographs become overexposed.
Evaluative, Matrix, and Multi metering analyze a large portion of the frame. These systems perform exceptionally well in many everyday situations, but a small bright Moon against a predominantly black background can present an unusual challenge.
The camera sees vast areas of darkness and may calculate an exposure intended to make those dark areas brighter.
Unfortunately, you usually do not want the black sky to become middle gray.
You want it to remain dark.
Switching to Manual exposure is often the simplest solution because the camera no longer changes exposure every time you recompose.
Spot metering can also provide a useful starting point if the Moon is large enough in the frame for the meter to isolate it accurately.
Once you establish a suitable exposure, Manual mode gives you consistency.
The Fastest Fix Is Usually Your Shutter Speed
When the Moon appears completely white, start by increasing the shutter speed.
Suppose your current exposure is:
ISO 400
f/5.6
1/30 second
That may be far too bright for an ordinary full Moon.
Instead of changing every setting at once, shorten the exposure.
Try:
1/60 second
Then:
1/125 second
Follow with:
1/250 second
Continue until recognizable lunar texture begins returning.
Changing one variable at a time makes it much easier to understand exactly what corrected the problem.
For a bright Moon, a reasonable testing point might be:
Mode: Manual
ISO: 100
Aperture: f/8
Shutter speed: 1/125 to 1/500 second
File format: RAW
Focus: Manual after focusing accurately
These numbers are starting points, not universal settings. Moon phase, atmospheric haze, clouds, altitude, lens choice, and other conditions can affect the exposure you need.
Lower ISO When the Moon Is Still Too Bright
ISO is another easy place to check.
Photographers naturally associate nighttime with high ISO settings such as ISO 1600, 3200, or 6400. Those values can be useful for stars, dim landscapes, and a deeply eclipsed Moon.
An ordinary bright Moon is different.
If your camera is set to ISO 1600 while photographing a brilliant lunar disk, you may create an exposure problem before you even press the shutter.
Try lowering ISO to 100 or 200.
Besides helping control brightness, a lower ISO generally produces a cleaner file with more flexibility to preserve subtle lunar tones.
Don’t raise ISO just because you’re shooting after sunset.
Choose it based on the subject’s brightness.
Do Not Trust the Camera Screen Alone
A photograph can look fine on the rear screen and still contain badly clipped highlights.
Your eyes adapt to darkness while photographing at night. After that adjustment, even a moderately bright LCD can make an image appear more luminous and detailed than it really is.
Instead of relying entirely on the preview, inspect the histogram and highlight warnings.
When important lunar highlights are pushed firmly against the far-right edge of the histogram, detail may be clipping.
If your camera provides highlight warnings, sometimes called blinkies, watch for them when large portions of the Moon begin flashing.
Shorten the exposure and photograph it again.

Look for Craters, Not Maximum Brightness
Here is a simple field test that works surprisingly well.
After taking your photograph, enlarge the Moon on the camera display.
Do you see craters?
Can you distinguish darker lunar regions?
Is there visible texture across the surface?
Does the Moon contain several tones rather than a single patch of white?
If the answer is yes, the exposure is much closer.
Many photographers unintentionally judge Moon exposure according to how bright and impressive the Moon appears on the screen. That is the wrong goal.
Surface information matters more than luminosity.
A slightly darker Moon containing rich texture will usually produce a much stronger final photograph than an intensely bright disk with no recoverable detail.
Exposure Compensation Can Fix the Problem in Aperture Priority
Manual mode is not mandatory.
If you prefer Aperture Priority, your camera may still try to brighten the scene because of the dark background. Negative exposure compensation lets you override that decision.
Try beginning around:
-1 EV
If the Moon remains too bright, compare:
-1.7 EV
or
-2 EV
Exact values will vary considerably, so use the numbers as experiments rather than rules.
The important principle is straightforward: tell the camera that you intentionally want the scene darker than its meter recommends.
Once the lunar surface looks correct, check the histogram and zoom in to confirm that important detail remains intact.
A Tiny Moon Can Make Metering More Difficult
Lens choice changes more than composition.
With a wide-angle lens, the Moon might occupy only a tiny percentage of the photograph. Most of the frame becomes sky, landscape, buildings, water, or another foreground.
Under those conditions, the camera has even less lunar information to consider when calculating exposure.
A telephoto lens makes the Moon larger in the frame, which can make exposure evaluation easier while also revealing significantly more surface detail.
Photographers building a dedicated Moon setup should consider telephoto lenses, a tripod, and remote shutter releases to see which options suit their camera system, focal-length needs, and budget.
Equipment helps, but buying a longer lens will not fix incorrect exposure by itself. The lunar highlights still need protection.

Why the Moon and Landscape Cannot Always Share One Exposure
Sometimes the Moon is exposed correctly while everything below it becomes nearly black.
That does not necessarily mean the photograph is wrong.
A city skyline, mountain, beach, field, or building can be dramatically darker than the lunar surface. Increasing exposure enough to brighten the foreground may destroy the Moon’s texture.
This is a dynamic-range problem, not a camera failure.
You have several creative options.
Expose primarily for the Moon and allow the foreground to become a silhouette.
Photograph during twilight when the landscape retains more ambient light.
Make separate exposures when the scene genuinely requires them.
Alternatively, embrace the contrast and use the bright Moon as a visual focal point within a darker scene.

Why Lunar Eclipse Photography Changes the Rule
An important exception occurs during a lunar eclipse.
The ordinary Moon is bright, but as it travels into Earth’s shadow, its brightness can decrease dramatically. Settings that preserved beautiful crater detail earlier may eventually produce a photograph that is much too dark.
That means you cannot find one exposure at the beginning of an eclipse and leave it unchanged throughout the entire event.
During the brighter stages, protect highlights carefully.
As the eclipse deepens, gradually open the aperture, increase ISO, or lengthen the shutter speed as necessary.
Near the darkest stage, exposures can be dramatically different from those used for the uneclipsed Moon.

Bracket the Exposure When the Contrast Becomes Extreme
Certain lunar situations make choosing a single exposure difficult.
A partial lunar eclipse is a perfect example.
Part of the lunar surface can remain brilliantly illuminated while another section sits much deeper inside Earth’s shadow. Exposing for the darker area may destroy detail in the bright portion.
Instead of guessing, make several exposures.
You might capture:
-1 EV | 0 EV | +1 EV
The darker photograph protects highlights. The middle frame provides a reference exposure. The brighter image can reveal information within darker portions of the Moon.
You do not have to merge these photographs.
Sometimes bracketing helps you discover which exposure produced the strongest individual frame.

Can You Fix an Overexposed Moon in Editing?
Sometimes.
If your RAW file contains highlight information, reducing Exposure, Highlights, and Whites can restore considerable texture.
When the lunar surface is completely clipped, however, editing software has no crater information to recover.
A white area containing no recorded detail cannot be transformed into authentic lunar texture merely by making it darker.
This is why protecting highlights while photographing is so important.
RAW gives you more flexibility, but it does not make severe clipping harmless.

Turn Your Moon Photograph Into a Print
Once you capture a sharp Moon with strong crater detail, consider printing it rather than leaving it only on a screen.
Lunar photographs can work beautifully as small fine-art prints, dramatic black-background enlargements, or parts of eclipse sequences. Before ordering, check whether the image contains enough pixels for the intended dimensions.

Try Something More Creative Than a Moon Close-Up
Once you have exposure under control, move beyond photographing the Moon as a circle floating in an empty sky.
Use it above a bridge.
Frame it between buildings.
Photograph moonlight reflecting across water.
Place tree branches in the foreground.
Include silhouettes.
Use a skyline to communicate scale.
Photograph people watching the Moon.
Those compositions can tell far more of a story than magnification alone.

Quick Troubleshooting: If Your Moon Is Still White
Run through these checks in order:
- Increase shutter speed. Reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor.
- Lower ISO. Try ISO 100 or 200 while the Moon remains bright.
- Check the histogram. Look for important highlights clipping at the right edge.
- Use negative exposure compensation. This is especially helpful in Aperture Priority.
- Switch to Manual mode. Stop the camera from repeatedly recalculating exposure from the black sky.
- Magnify the photograph. Look specifically for crater and surface detail.
- Photograph in RAW. Give yourself greater editing latitude.
- Bracket difficult exposures. Compare several brightness levels instead of relying on one frame.
Following the same sequence each time is much more effective than randomly changing ISO, aperture, shutter speed, metering, and exposure compensation at the same time.
So, why is the Moon overexposed in your photos?
Most often, your camera responds to the surrounding darkness rather than recognizing how bright the lunar surface actually is.
The solution isn’t to make every nighttime photograph brighter.
Treat the Moon as the bright subject it is.
Start with a low ISO, use a faster shutter speed, protect the highlights, examine the histogram, and enlarge the photograph until you can see genuine lunar texture. If an automatic exposure mode continues fighting your decisions, switch to Manual exposure and take control.
During a lunar eclipse, remember that the situation changes as Earth’s shadow moves across the Moon. Exposure must evolve with it.
Most importantly, judge success by detail, not glow.
Once the craters, tonal variations, and texture return, the Moon stops looking like a white light in the sky and starts looking like a world.
