A lunar eclipse floating above an illuminated city skyline can create one of the most dramatic night-sky photographs.
Instead of photographing the Moon alone against black space, you can place it above skyscrapers, bridges, towers, monuments, rooftop silhouettes, waterfronts, or recognizable architecture. Those urban elements add scale and immediately tell the viewer where the photograph was taken.
City eclipse photography, though, introduces a challenge.
The Moon, dark sky, glowing windows, LED signs, streetlights, and buildings can all require different exposures. Add the Moon’s constant movement across the sky, and capturing the photograph you imagined becomes much more complicated than simply pointing a telephoto lens toward the eclipse.
The solution is to plan the Moon’s relationship to the skyline before the eclipse begins.
For the deep partial lunar eclipse of August 27 to 28, 2026, this approach is especially exciting. At greatest eclipse, 96.3% of the Moon’s disk will enter Earth’s umbra, creating an opportunity to photograph a dramatically shadowed Moon above an illuminated urban landscape.
Here is how to photograph a lunar eclipse over a city skyline while keeping the Moon recognizable, the buildings controlled, and the composition visually powerful.

Plan Where the Moon Will Cross the Skyline
Location planning matters more for skyline eclipse photography than almost any camera setting.
Finding an attractive skyline is only the beginning. You also need to know where the Moon will appear in relation to that skyline at the exact phase you want to photograph.
Moon position changes continuously throughout the eclipse.
An excellent viewpoint at 9:30 p.m. might become useless two hours later if the Moon has moved far above or beside the buildings you hoped to include.
Planning tools that show the Moon’s azimuth and elevation can help you determine:
- The direction of the Moon
- Its height above the horizon
- Where it will be during maximum eclipse
- Whether a building will block it
- Which shooting position creates the desired alignment
Scout the location during daylight whenever possible.
Identify several skyline features rather than committing to only one building. Towers, church spires, bridges, rooflines, observation decks, domes, and illuminated signs can all become useful compositional anchors.
Most importantly, determine where you need to stand.
Moving your camera position can dramatically change where the Moon appears relative to a distant building.

Move Farther Away to Make the Moon Look Larger Against Buildings
Here is one of the most important techniques for creating a spectacular city eclipse photograph.
Photographers sometimes assume they should position themselves as close as possible to the skyline. That can make the buildings dominate the frame while the Moon appears relatively small.
Instead, consider photographing the skyline from farther away with a telephoto lens.
Distance allows you to use a longer focal length while keeping both the Moon and buildings in the composition. This creates perspective compression, making distant elements appear visually closer together.
Imagine photographing a skyscraper with the eclipsed Moon appearing immediately above its roof.
From nearby, you might need a relatively wide lens to include the building, leaving the Moon tiny.
Move considerably farther away and use 200mm, 300mm, or longer. Suddenly, the Moon can occupy much more of the frame while the building remains visible beneath it.
The Moon has not physically become larger.
Your composition has changed.
That distinction is one of the secrets behind those photographs where an enormous Moon appears beside a recognizable landmark.
Choose Your Lens According to the Relationship You Want
No single lens is best for photographing a lunar eclipse over a city skyline.
Think about how prominent you want the Moon to appear.
A 70-200mm lens offers flexibility when you want a substantial skyline with the Moon occupying a smaller but noticeable part of the composition.
Moving toward 300mm or 400mm can produce a stronger relationship between individual buildings and the Moon, particularly when photographing from a distant viewpoint.
Very long lenses such as 500mm or 600mm can create spectacular compression, although framing becomes much harder as the Moon moves.
A wider lens still has a place. Try one when reflections, bridges, waterfronts, clouds, traffic, or multiple buildings deserve as much attention as the eclipse.

Treat the Moon and City as Two Different Exposure Problems
This is where city skyline eclipse photography becomes especially interesting.
An illuminated skyline may contain brilliant windows, signs, architectural lighting, vehicle headlights, and deep shadows at the same time.
Meanwhile, the Moon’s brightness changes throughout the eclipse.
Trying to create one exposure that captures everything perfectly can be unrealistic.
Start by protecting the most important highlights.
When the Moon still has a brightly illuminated section, expose carefully enough to retain visible lunar texture rather than letting it become a featureless white shape.
City lights deserve the same attention. Neon signs and LED lighting can clip surprisingly quickly.
Use the histogram and highlight warning rather than relying entirely on the rear screen.
Once the eclipse becomes much darker, adjust exposure for the Moon instead of stubbornly keeping the settings used earlier.

Try These Camera Settings as a Starting Point
Exact settings depend on the eclipse phase, lens, atmospheric conditions, city brightness, and how much lunar detail you want to preserve.
For a skyline composition while the Moon is still relatively bright, begin around:
Mode: Manual
Aperture: f/5.6 to f/8
Shutter Speed: 1/125 to 1/250 second
ISO: 100 to 400
File Format: RAW
White Balance: Daylight or approximately 4000K to 5000K
Focus: Manual after establishing accurate focus
As the Moon enters deeper shadow, you may need to move toward:
Aperture: f/4 to f/5.6
Shutter Speed: 1/15 to 1/60 second
ISO: 800 to 3200
Treat these numbers as starting points, not fixed recipes.
A darker Moon may require more exposure, while atmospheric haze above a city can reduce contrast. Long telephoto lenses also make lunar movement more visible, so avoid automatically lengthening the shutter indefinitely.

Capture a Separate Exposure for the Skyline
A powerful technique for this type of photograph is to take one exposure of the Moon and another of the city without moving the camera.
Suppose the exposure that reveals the eclipsed Moon makes the skyline too bright.
First, capture the Moon with settings that preserve its color and lunar detail.
Next, without changing composition or tripod position, create a darker exposure for the illuminated buildings.
You now have two files optimized for different parts of the scene.
The technique is particularly valuable around bright commercial districts, waterfront skylines, bridges, stadiums, and landmark buildings covered in architectural lighting.
The goal is not to create an impossible scene. Instead, separate exposures can capture a brightness range the camera struggles to record in a single shot.

Do Not Let City Light Pollution Ruin the Mood
Light pollution does not necessarily prevent good lunar eclipse photography.
In fact, a skyline needs artificial light to feel alive.
Problems begin when nearby lamps shine directly into the lens, or atmospheric haze reflects large amounts of city light back toward the camera.
Whenever possible, position yourself so bright streetlights are behind you, outside the frame, or blocked by a building or other solid object.
A lens hood can help reduce stray light.
Check the front element occasionally for condensation, fingerprints, or moisture because point light sources make smudges especially noticeable.
Avoid brightening every shadow during editing.
Night should still look like night.
Keeping some areas dark makes illuminated windows and the copper-colored Moon appear more dramatic.

Focus on the Moon, Then Check the Buildings
Begin focusing while the Moon is still bright.
Use Live View or your electronic viewfinder to magnify the lunar surface, then focus carefully until the crater edges and rim look crisp.
Switch to manual focus once you’ve established accuracy.
Next, check the skyline.
When the buildings are extremely distant, they may remain acceptably sharp alongside the Moon, particularly at moderate apertures. Closer architecture can require a compromise or an additional focused frame.
Never judge critical focus from the normal camera-screen view.
Magnify several photographs and inspect the Moon and important architectural details.
Temperature changes and accidental contact with the focusing ring can shift focus during a long eclipse session, so check again periodically.
Use Buildings to Create Scale
The skyline should contribute something more than simply filling the bottom of the photograph.
Look for a visual relationship between architecture and the Moon.
Try positioning the eclipsed Moon:
- Directly above a tower
- Between two skyscrapers
- Beside a recognizable spire
- Above the arch of a bridge
- Behind a rooftop silhouette
- Near a row of illuminated buildings
- Over a waterfront reflection
- Beside an observation deck
- Within negative space created by architecture
Vertical compositions can be particularly effective when the Moon is high above a single building.
Horizontal framing works better when the skyline itself plays a substantial role in the story.
Leave additional space in the direction the Moon is traveling. As the eclipse progresses, you may discover a stronger composition without relocating your tripod.
Photograph More Than One Version of the Scene
Do not spend the entire eclipse repeating a single composition.
Secure the planned photograph first, then experiment.
Capture a tight telephoto frame showing the Moon near one building.
Zoom wider for the entire skyline.
Try a vertical composition.
Include reflections if you are near water.
Photograph silhouettes of people watching.
Use negative space.
Record several eclipse stages passing over the same architecture.
A sequence showing the Moon moving across a skyline can become especially compelling because the city remains relatively constant while the lunar surface transforms above it.

Think About the Final Crop Before You Pack Up
City skyline eclipse photographs are often cropped substantially because you may need extra room around the moving Moon during capture.
Before removing large portions of the file, consider where the finished photograph will eventually appear.
A panoramic skyline requires a completely different crop from an 8×10 wall print, 12×18 photograph, square social-media image, or vertical Pinterest graphic.

Watch illuminated windows and signs carefully, protect lunar detail, keep exposures short enough for sharpness, and capture separate brightness variations when the scene exceeds what one frame can comfortably hold.
Then pay attention to everything happening beneath the Moon.
A recognizable tower can establish location. Reflections can add depth. A bridge can lead the eye toward the eclipse. Dark rooftops can create scale, while glowing windows remind the viewer that an extraordinary astronomical event is unfolding above an ordinary city night.
