You press the shutter button, but the photograph is not taken immediately. Instead, the camera pauses, flashes a light, searches for focus, counts down, or appears to do nothing before finally recording the image.
That unexpected wait can make you miss a smile, a bird taking flight, a child’s expression, or the exact moment someone crosses the frame. It may feel like the camera is slow or malfunctioning, but the delay is often caused by an active setting rather than a mechanical problem.
The most effective solution is to notice what happens during the pause. A blinking timer light points toward a different cause than a lens moving back and forth. Several quick flashes suggest something different from a camera that waits only in dim light.

Focus priority waits for the focus to be confirmed before taking the photograph.
Release priority records the photograph when the shutter button is pressed, even if focus has not been fully confirmed.

3. Red-Eye Reduction Is Producing a Preflash

- Release delay

Common choices range from a fraction of a second to several seconds.

6. Mirror Lock-Up Is Dividing the Release Into Two Steps
A DSLR contains a mirror that redirects light into the optical viewfinder. The mirror must move out of the way before the sensor can record the photograph.
Mirror lock-up separates this movement from the exposure. The first shutter press raises the mirror. A second press, or a timed delay, opens the shutter.
When the feature is selected accidentally, the first press may appear to do nothing. The viewfinder can go dark because the mirror has already lifted, while the camera waits for the second command.
Look for settings named:
- Mirror lock-up
- MLU
- Mirror up
- Mirror pre-release
- Exposure delay
- Anti-shock
Return the release mode to single frame for ordinary handheld photography.
Mirrorless cameras do not use the same optical-viewfinder mirror mechanism, although they may offer electronic first-curtain settings or other vibration-reduction options.
7. The Shutter Speed Is Longer Than You Realize
Sometimes the camera responds immediately, but the selected exposure lasts long enough to feel like a delay.
Shutter speeds appear in several forms:
- 1/250 means one two-hundred-and-fiftieth of a second
- 1/30 means one-thirtieth of a second
- 1″ means one full second
- 5″ means five seconds
- 30″ means thirty seconds
The quotation mark is important. A display showing 2″ does not mean 1/2 second. It means the shutter will remain open for two seconds.
Slow shutter speeds are common in dim interiors, night scenes, small-aperture landscapes, low-ISO photographs, and certain automatic modes. During that exposure, avoid moving the camera unless intentional motion effects are desired.

8. The Flash Has Not Finished Recharging
A flash uses stored electrical energy to produce a short burst of light. After firing, it needs time to recharge before it can deliver full power again.
The next shutter press may be delayed or ignored while the flash recycles.
Long recycling times are more likely when:
- Flash power is near maximum
- The batteries are weak
- Photographs are taken rapidly
- The subject is far away
- A small aperture is selected
- ISO is very low
- The flash has overheated
Watch the flash-ready indicator. A lightning-bolt symbol or illuminated ready light usually appears when sufficient power is available.
Fresh compatible batteries may improve recycling speed. Raising ISO or opening the aperture can reduce the amount of flash power required. Moving closer to the subject also helps because the flash does not need to work as hard.

9. A Remote, Phone App, or Wireless Connection Is Adding Lag
Remote-control systems do not always trigger the camera instantly.

10. Interval Shooting or Time-Lapse Mode Is Active
Interval timers are designed to take photographs according to a programmed schedule. The camera might wait several seconds, minutes, or hours before recording the first frame.
Check for:
- Interval timer shooting
- Time-lapse photography
- Intervalometer
- Delayed start
- Number of intervals
- Shooting interval
- Start time
Cancel the interval sequence and return the drive mode to single shooting.
Some cameras continue to display the normal composition even while waiting for the programmed start time, making the delay seem mysterious. A small interval icon, timer symbol, or status message may be the only clue.
11. Low Light Is Slowing Several Camera Systems
Dim conditions affect more than exposure.
Autofocus may take longer because the camera cannot detect enough contrast. Face and eye detection can struggle to identify a subject. Automatic flash may need to rise, charge, and measure the scene. Noise-reduction features can also become active.
