You turn on your camera expecting to see an aperture such as f/2.8, f/4, or f/8, but the display suddenly reads F00, F0, F–, or something similarly strange.
It immediately looks like an error code.
In many cases, however, the camera is not reporting an aperture of f/0. Instead, that unusual display suggests the camera cannot determine the aperture information it normally receives from the lens.
Changing ISO, shutter speed, metering mode, or exposure compensation won’t fix a missing electronic connection between the camera and lens. Before changing random settings, look at exactly where F00 appears and what else has stopped working.
That information can help you determine whether you have an improperly mounted lens, interrupted electronic communication, a manual lens that doesn’t transmit aperture data, an adapter, or an actual equipment problem.

What Does F00 Mean on a Camera?
Normally, the aperture area of your camera display shows a value such as:
- f/1.8
- f/2.8
- f/4
- f/5.6
- f/8
- f/11
Those numbers tell you the aperture the lens is currently using.
When F00, F0, F–, or a similar incomplete value appears in that same position, the camera may not be receiving the information needed to display a normal aperture value.
The exact appearance varies by camera manufacturer and model. Some cameras show dashes rather than zeros, while others may display a warning elsewhere on the screen.
Nikon, for example, documents an F–– indication when certain cameras do not correctly detect an attached lens. Nikon cameras using compatible non-CPU lenses can also behave differently because the body may not electronically receive ordinary aperture information from the lens.
Therefore, think of F00 less as a mysterious exposure setting and more as a question from the camera:
“What aperture is this lens actually using?”
F00 Is Not an Aperture of f/0
This is one of the most important points to understand.
If your camera displays F00, you have not somehow selected an extraordinary f/0 lens aperture.
A normal photographic lens has a specific maximum aperture, such as f/1.2, f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2.8, or f/4.
The camera needs information from the attached lens to know which aperture values are available and which one is currently selected.
When that information disappears, the display can no longer behave normally.
As a result, repeatedly turning the aperture command dial may do nothing.
Your first task should be to find out why the camera has lost, or never received, aperture information.
First, Turn the Camera Off and Remount the Lens
Start with the simplest possibility.
Turn the camera off before removing the lens.
Press the lens-release button, remove the lens carefully, then align the mounting marks and reattach it. Rotate the lens until it reaches its proper locked position.
Next, turn the camera back on.
Check the aperture display immediately.
If F00 disappears and a normal aperture such as f/4 or f/5.6 returns, the lens may have been slightly out of position.
A lens can appear attached while still being just far enough from its correct locking position to interfere with electronic communication.
This is especially worth checking if the problem appeared immediately after:
- Changing lenses
- Taking the camera out of a tightly packed bag
- Attaching an adapter
- Installing a teleconverter
- Handling the lens mount
- Accidentally pressing the lens-release button
Practical Tip
Do not force a lens farther around the mount because F00 remains visible. If the lens doesn’t attach smoothly in the normal direction, remove it and verify you are using the correct mount.
Look for Other Clues Besides F00
Don’t diagnose the aperture display in isolation.
Check what else the camera can and cannot do.
For example, ask yourself:
Does autofocus work?
Can you change the aperture?
Does image stabilization still work?
Will the shutter release?
Does the camera identify the lens in playback information?
Did several functions disappear at the same time?
Multiple failures point more strongly toward a communication problem.
Suppose F00 appears, autofocus stops, the aperture cannot be adjusted, and lens information disappears simultaneously. That combination is much more revealing than an unusual aperture display by itself.

Check the Electronic Contacts
Many modern interchangeable lenses communicate with the camera through small electronic contacts around the lens mount.
These connections can transmit information involving aperture, autofocus, stabilization, lens identification, focal length, and other functions.
Inspect the contacts on both the lens and camera.
Look for:
- Fingerprints
- Dirt
- Moisture
- Corrosion
- Foreign material
- Bent pins
- Recessed contacts
- Visible physical damage
Avoid poking the contacts with pins, screwdrivers, knives, or another metal object.
Aggressive cleaning can cause more damage than the contamination you’re trying to remove.
If the contacts look damaged rather than merely dirty, professional servicing becomes the safer option.
What If You Are Using a Manual Lens?
Here is where F00 can be completely normal.
Some manual and older lenses do not electronically transmit aperture information to the camera.
The lens can be perfectly functional, even if the camera has no electronic way of knowing which f-number you selected.
Depending on the equipment, you may control aperture with a physical ring on the lens.
Some cameras let photographers manually enter information for non-CPU lenses. Nikon documents, for example, that entering the focal length and maximum aperture for compatible non-CPU lenses can enable additional camera functions and aperture information on supported bodies.
So if you deliberately mounted a vintage or fully manual lens and F00 appeared immediately, don’t assume anything is broken.
Find out whether that particular camera-and-lens combination is supposed to exchange electronic aperture information.
Your Lens Adapter May Be the Reason
Adapters add another layer between the camera and lens.
Some adapters are purely mechanical. They let one type of lens physically attach to another camera mount but contain no electronics to transmit aperture information.
With this kind of setup, you can expect an unusual aperture reading.
Electronic adapters are different.
Depending on the adapter, camera, lens, and firmware combination, they may transmit:
- Aperture information
- Autofocus commands
- Image stabilization data
- Focal length
- EXIF information
Compatibility can vary considerably.
If F00 appeared only after adding an adapter, remove the adapter from your troubleshooting equation first. Whenever possible, test a native compatible lens directly on the camera.
That single test can save a lot of time.
Test With Another Lens
One of the fastest ways to diagnose F00 is to stop changing settings and change the lens.
Attach another known-compatible electronic lens to the same camera.
If the second lens displays its aperture normally
The original lens, its contacts, its electronics, or its compatibility becomes the stronger suspect.
If both lenses show the same problem
Look more closely at the camera body, especially the mount and electronic contacts.
Testing substitutions is one of the most reliable troubleshooting methods because you change one variable instead of ten menu settings and hoping something works.

Try the Original Lens on Another Compatible Camera
If you have another compatible body, reverse the previous test.
Put the questionable lens on Camera B.
If it works normally there, the original camera body becomes more suspicious.
If the same lens shows abnormal aperture information on two compatible camera bodies, the evidence points strongly to the lens.
You can think of the test this way:
Camera A + Lens A = F00
Not enough information yet.
Camera A + Lens B = normal aperture
Lens A is now more suspicious.
Camera B + Lens A = F00
The evidence against Lens A becomes considerably stronger.
This method is far more useful than immediately performing a factory reset.
Check the Aperture Ring on Older Lenses
Certain older electronically compatible lenses have physical aperture rings.
On some camera systems, the ring must be set to a specific position so the camera body can control aperture electronically.
Nikon documentation, for example, notes that an FEE warning on applicable equipment can occur when a lens with an aperture ring has not been set to its minimum aperture, meaning the highest f-number on the ring.
FEE and F00 are not necessarily the same warning, but photographers can easily confuse unusual aperture-related displays.
If your lens has an aperture ring, check the manual for your exact camera and lens combination before assuming the electronics have failed.
Do Not Confuse F00 With FEE or an Ordinary Aperture Warning
Small camera displays make similar-looking messages surprisingly easy to misread.
Depending on the model, you might encounter:
- F00 or F0
- F–
- FEE
- An aperture value flashing
- An aperture followed by another warning symbol
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
FEE on certain Nikon cameras, for instance, has been associated with an aperture-ring configuration problem on compatible lenses. Nikon also documents F–– indications associated with lens attachment or non-CPU lens situations on various models.
Before searching for a solution, read the display carefully.
One character can completely change the diagnosis.
Check Firmware Only After the Basic Tests
Firmware can affect communication between modern camera bodies, electronically controlled lenses, and adapters.
This possibility becomes more relevant when:
- You recently updated the camera
- You recently updated the lens
- A third-party lens is involved
- An electronic adapter is involved
- The equipment previously worked together
- The problem started after a firmware change
Visit the official support pages for the exact products involved and verify compatibility.
Do not install firmware intended for a similar-looking camera or lens.
More importantly, don’t start with firmware if remounting the lens resolves F00.
Start with the obvious physical connection before moving toward software.
Should You Reset the Camera?
Not yet.
A factory reset cannot clean a dirty electronic contact, repair a damaged lens mount, or suddenly give a fully mechanical lens electronic communication.
Instead, try a simple power cycle:
- Turn the camera off.
- Remove the lens.
- Remove the battery if your camera permits it.
- Wait briefly.
- Reinstall the battery.
- Mount the lens correctly.
- Turn the camera on.
- Check the aperture display.
Save a full settings reset for later troubleshooting.
Randomly resetting everything can also destroy carefully configured autofocus, button, video, exposure, and custom settings without fixing the actual cause.
A Fast F00 Troubleshooting Order
When F00 appears while you are photographing, use this sequence:
- Turn the camera off.
- Remove and correctly remount the lens.
- Turn the camera on and check the aperture display.
- Confirm whether the lens is electronic or completely manual.
- If an adapter is attached, determine whether it supports electronic communication.
- Inspect the lens and camera contacts for contamination or damage.
- Try another compatible electronic lens.
- If possible, test the original lens on another compatible camera.
- Check lens and camera firmware compatibility.
- Consider professional service if the fault consistently follows one piece of equipment.
Following that order prevents you from spending an hour changing settings that were never responsible.
When F00 May Point to a Hardware Problem
Hardware failure becomes more likely when F00 appears with a lens that previously worked normally and the simple tests make no difference.
Pay particular attention when:
- The camera or lens was recently dropped
- The mount appears bent
- Electronic contacts are damaged
- Communication cuts in and out when the lens moves
- Several known-good lenses fail on the same body
- One lens fails on several compatible camera bodies
- Autofocus and aperture control disappear together
- The camera freezes when the lens is attached

Usually, no.
Don’t buy a replacement lens right away just because an unfamiliar aperture display appears.

After the normal aperture display returns, do more than press the shutter once.
Take several photographs at different apertures.
Try something like:
- f/2.8
- f/4
- f/5.6
- f/8
Confirm that the displayed value changes correctly and that the resulting exposures behave normally.
Then test autofocus, image stabilization, and playback information.
If everything operates consistently, you have much stronger evidence that the communication problem has genuinely been resolved.
