You look through the viewfinder, press the directional pad or move the joystick, and expect the little autofocus box to travel across the frame.
Nothing happens.
The focus point may stay stubbornly centered. Maybe the camera keeps placing a box around a face instead. On another camera, the joystick seems completely unresponsive even though every other control works normally.
The good news is that a focus point that will not move rarely means the autofocus system has failed.
More often, another camera setting has temporarily taken control.
Modern cameras contain several autofocus features that can compete for priority. Subject detection, face and eye autofocus, wide-area focusing, tracking, touchscreen controls, joystick locks, custom button assignments, and automatic AF-area selection can all change how the focus point behaves.
Understanding which setting currently has priority is the fastest way to solve the problem.

First, Check Whether You Actually Have a Movable Focus Point
Before changing anything else, look at your current autofocus area.
A movable focus point is normally available when the camera is using a mode such as:
- Single Point AF
- Flexible Spot
- Spot AF
- Pinpoint AF
- Small AF Area
- 1-Point AF
The exact name depends on the camera brand.
Wide, Auto Area, Tracking, Zone, or Subject Detection modes work differently. Instead of giving you one tiny box that can move anywhere, the camera may use a larger section of the frame or automatically decide where to focus.
Consequently, the first question is not simply, “Why is my focus point stuck?”
Ask instead:
Is my camera currently in a focus-area mode that allows me to position an individual point?
If not, switch temporarily to Single Point AF and try moving the focus box again.
For a broader understanding of autofocus behavior, please check your camera’s focus-area controls alongside the focus mode itself. Those two settings work together, but they do different jobs.
1. Auto Area AF May Be Choosing the Focus Point for You
Automatic focus-area modes intentionally give the camera more control.
With Auto Area AF, Wide AF, Automatic Selection AF, or similarly named settings, the camera evaluates the scene and selects what it believes should be sharp.
A photographer might see several boxes appear across the frame rather than one manually positioned point.
Pressing the joystick in this mode may accomplish nothing.
Try this:
- Open the autofocus area or AF-area menu.
- Select Single Point, 1-Point, Flexible Spot, or the equivalent option.
- Return to the shooting screen.
- Press the focus-point selection button if your camera requires one.
- Move the joystick or directional pad.
The focus point should now respond if automatic AF-area selection caused the problem.
2. Face or Eye Detection May Be Overriding Your Selection
Face and eye detection have become extremely capable, but they can also create confusion.
Suppose you position a focus point on someone’s shirt.
The camera detects an eye and immediately moves its active focus indication upward.
It can feel as though the camera ignored you.
In reality, the autofocus system has decided that eye detection takes priority over your manually positioned point.
This behavior varies between camera models. Some systems use eye detection only inside the AF area you selected, while others can search more widely across the frame.
Turn Face Detection or Eye Detection off temporarily and test the focus point again.
If manual movement returns, you have identified the cause.
There is nothing wrong with continuing to use eye autofocus afterward. The important part is understanding who makes the final focusing decision: you or the camera.
3. Subject Detection Can Take Control Too
Newer mirrorless cameras may detect much more than faces.
Depending on the model, the autofocus system might recognize:
- Birds
- Animals
- Cars
- Motorcycles
- Bicycles
- Airplanes
- Trains
- Insects
Once subject detection finds something it recognizes, the autofocus box may attach itself to that subject.
Moving a conventional focus point can then appear unnecessary or restricted because the camera is operating in tracking mode.
For a quick diagnosis, turn Subject Detection off, select Single Point AF, and test the joystick.
If everything starts behaving normally, your camera was following its subject-detection instructions rather than ignoring the focus controls.
4. Your Focus Joystick May Be Locked
This is one of the easiest settings to overlook.
Some cameras let you lock the focus lever, joystick, multi-selector, or directional controls so accidental movements don’t change the focus position.
That feature is useful while carrying the camera or working quickly, but it can be bewildering when activated unintentionally.
Look for:
- Focus lever lock
- Multi-selector lock
- Control lock
- Joystick lock
- AF point selection lock
Some camera bodies also have a physical lock switch.
Try pressing or holding the joystick, checking the camera’s Lock menu, or examining any switch marked L.
Once you release the lock, the focus point should move normally again.
5. You May Need to Activate Focus-Point Selection First
Not every camera lets you move a focus point with the joystick or directional pad immediately.
Certain models require you to press an AF-point selection button first.
The sequence may look like this:
- Press the AF-area or focus-point button.
- Wait for the focus box to become highlighted.
- Use the joystick or directional buttons to move it.
- Half-press the shutter to confirm.
Skipping that first button makes the directional control do something else.
On one camera, it may change ISO. Another may adjust white balance, drive mode, or display settings.
Learning that activation step can solve what initially looks like a malfunction.
6. Custom Button Settings May Have Changed the Controls
Camera buttons are increasingly customizable.
That flexibility is wonderful until a control is reassigned without you realizing it.
Perhaps the joystick was configured to change AF-area size instead of position. A directional button might have been assigned to ISO, film simulation, metering, white balance, or another shortcut.
This is particularly worth checking when:
- You recently customized the camera.
- Someone else used your camera.
- You loaded saved settings.
- You bought the camera used.
- A firmware update changed available options.
- The controls worked differently before.
Open the Custom Controls, Button/Dial Settings, or Custom Key menu and check what function is assigned to the focus lever or directional pad.
Avoid a full factory reset until you check this first.
A reset can erase useful custom settings when a single button assignment was the issue.
7. Tracking Autofocus Can Make the Point Look Stuck
Tracking AF is designed to follow a subject after it selects it.
Once tracking begins, the autofocus box may stay attached to a person, animal, vehicle, or other target instead of responding like a normal movable point.
Cancel tracking before repositioning the starting point.
Depending on your camera, you might accomplish that by:
- Releasing the shutter button
- Pressing the center of the joystick
- Pressing AF-ON again
- Pressing a cancel button
- Tapping another part of the screen
- Switching briefly to Single Point AF
Tracking is incredibly useful for motion, but it changes how autofocus works.
8. Touchscreen Autofocus May Be Controlling the Position
Touch-enabled cameras can sometimes use the rear screen as a focus-position controller, even when you are looking through the electronic viewfinder.
A finger, nose, glove, or accidental touch can unexpectedly move the focus area.
Conversely, disabling Touch AF may change how certain focus controls respond.
Check settings labeled:
- Touch AF
- Touch Tracking
- Touch Shutter
- Touchpad AF
- Touch Function
Temporarily turn off touchscreen focusing and use only the physical joystick.
If the problem disappears, re-enable the touch features one at a time until you determine which behavior caused the conflict.
9. Manual Focus Changes What the Autofocus Point Does
Check the AF/MF switch on both the camera body and lens.
A lens set to manual focus may stop behaving as you expect when you try to select an autofocus point.
Some cameras continue to display a focusing aid in manual focus, which can make the situation even more confusing.
You may see:
- Focus peaking
- A magnified focusing box
- Distance scales
- Focus guides
- A central magnification area
Those graphics are not necessarily autofocus points.
Move the lens or camera switch back to AF, choose Single Point AF, and test again.

10. The Focus Point May Be Limited to Part of the Frame
Not every camera allows every autofocus point to reach every corner of the sensor.
Autofocus coverage depends on the camera design, autofocus mode, lens, subject-detection system, and sometimes the selected image format.
You might move the point toward an edge and find it stops.
That does not automatically indicate a fault.
Watch the focus box as you move it around the entire frame. If it travels normally through a large central area but stops consistently at predetermined boundaries, you are probably seeing the camera’s usable AF coverage.
Consult the camera manual for the exact autofocus-area limits of your model.
11. Portrait and Landscape Orientation May Store Different Focus Points
Some cameras can remember separate autofocus-point positions for horizontal and vertical shooting.
That feature is very useful for portraits.
For example, the camera might remember a point near the upper-left area in landscape orientation and another location after you rotate the body vertically.
Rotate the camera, and the point suddenly jumps somewhere else.
It can seem like the autofocus system is behaving unpredictably when the camera is actually recalling saved positions.
Look for a setting relating to:
- Orientation-linked AF point
- Separate points for vertical/horizontal
- Store AF point by orientation
- Switching vertical/horizontal AF area
Turn it off if you want one focus-point location to remain consistent regardless of camera orientation.
12. Check Whether You Are in Playback or a Menu
This sounds obvious, but cameras assign controls differently depending on what is displayed.
The joystick may:
- Navigate photographs during playback
- Move through menu options
- Magnify an image
- Select faces in playback
- Scroll through information screens
Return completely to the normal shooting display before testing focus-point movement.
Half-pressing the shutter usually exits playback immediately.
Once the live shooting view returns, press the focus-point selector and test again.
13. A Physical Joystick Problem Is Possible
Check software and settings first, but physical failures do happen.
Test the joystick outside autofocus selection.
Can it move through the camera menu?
Can it navigate photographs during playback?
Does every direction respond?
If the joystick works throughout the menu but refuses to move the focus point, a camera setting is much more likely to be responsible.
When one direction fails everywhere, however, the physical control deserves closer inspection.
Avoid forcing or aggressively cleaning a joystick. Moisture, sand, impact damage, or internal wear may require professional service.
The Fastest Focus-Point Troubleshooting Test
Rather than changing ten settings randomly, create a simple baseline.
Use this sequence:
- Return to the normal shooting screen.
- Set the lens and camera to autofocus.
- Choose AF-S or Single AF.
- Select Single Point, 1-Point, or Flexible Spot AF.
- Turn Face Detection off.
- Turn Eye Detection off.
- Turn Subject Detection off.
- Cancel tracking.
- Disable Touch AF temporarily.
- Check that the joystick is unlocked.
- Press the focus-point selection button if required.
- Try moving the point around the frame.
If the point moves now, the camera itself is fine.
Restore the features you normally use one at a time.
The moment focus-point movement changes again, you have found the setting responsible.
This approach is much safer than resetting every camera preference immediately.
What If the Camera Focuses but Still Chooses the Wrong Place?
A movable focus point solves only one part of autofocus control.
The camera still needs enough contrast and detail to focus reliably.
Plain walls, clear sky, fog, dark fabric, reflections, backlighting, and extremely dim scenes can make focusing difficult.
Place the focus box over something with a recognizable edge or texture.
Useful targets include:
- An eye
- Eyelashes
- Lettering
- Fabric seams
- Tree bark
- Building edges
- Patterns
- High-contrast boundaries

Practice Moving the Focus Point Intentionally
After fixing the problem, spend ten minutes practicing rather than immediately returning to automatic AF.
Choose one stationary object.
Place it in the center and focus.
Next, compose the subject on the left side and move the autofocus point onto it.
Repeat the exercise on the right, near the top, and toward the lower portion of the frame.
You are teaching yourself to position focus without letting the center autofocus point dictate composition.

When You Should Let the Camera Choose the Focus Point
Manual focus-point placement is not always the best choice.
Single Point AF is excellent when you need precision with:
- Still portraits
- Flowers
- Architecture
- Product photography
- Landscapes
- Still life
- Macro subjects
A larger zone or tracking mode can be better when the subject moves unpredictably.
Birds in flight, athletes, running pets, cyclists, playing children, and fast street scenes may be easier to follow when the camera has a larger autofocus area.
The goal is not to keep manual point selection active all the time.
Instead, understand when you want precise control and when the camera’s tracking technology can genuinely help.
If you cannot move the focus point on your camera, don’t assume the joystick or autofocus system is broken.
Begin with the focus area.
Switch to Single Point AF, turn off subject recognition temporarily, cancel tracking, confirm that the joystick is unlocked, and check whether custom controls have reassigned the button you normally use.
Face detection, Eye AF, Subject Detection, Wide Area AF, Touch AF, and tracking make focusing easier, but each can change how much manual control you retain.
Once you understand that hierarchy, the mystery disappears.
Your focus point is rarely simply “stuck.”
More often, the camera is following a different autofocus instruction.
Learning which feature has priority gives you something more valuable than a one-time fix: the ability to choose when the camera should make the focusing decision and when that decision should stay in your hands.
