You point your camera toward a bright sunset and suddenly see pale circles, colorful shapes, streaks of light, or a washed-out haze across the frame. Sometimes the result looks magical. Other times, contrast disappears, and the photograph feels flat.
That effect is lens flare.
Lens flare in photography happens when strong light enters a lens and reflects or scatters inside the optical system instead of traveling cleanly to the camera sensor or film. It can appear as visible shapes, soft haze, reduced contrast, or several effects at once.
Once you recognize what is happening, you can decide whether the flare belongs in the photograph.

What Does Lens Flare Look Like?
Lens flare doesn’t look the same every time. Two broad forms are especially useful to recognize: ghosting and veiling flare.
Ghosting creates visible shapes inside the frame. These may look like circles, polygons, colored spots, rings, or repeated bright forms that appear across the image. Their position often changes when you move the camera slightly.
Veiling flare is less obvious. Rather than producing distinct shapes, stray light spreads across part of the photograph and lowers contrast. Blacks become gray, colors look weaker, and fine detail may appear softer.
A photograph can contain both. You might see several colorful flare spots while part of the image also looks hazy.
Knowing which type you are seeing makes flare much easier to control.
Why Does Lens Flare Happen?
Modern camera lenses contain multiple pieces of glass called lens elements. Light normally passes through those elements and forms an image on the sensor or film.
When a very bright light source enters the lens, some light can reflect between internal surfaces instead of following the intended optical path. Other stray light may scatter inside the lens barrel.
The sun is the most familiar cause, but it is not the only one. Streetlights, headlights, stage lights, bright windows, reflections from water, and powerful studio lights can all create flare.
Your shooting angle matters enormously. A light source just outside the frame can sometimes create strong flare because stray light strikes the front element at an awkward angle.
Lens design matters too. Optical coatings, the number and arrangement of elements, filters, and the condition of the front element can all influence the result.
Lens Flare Is Not the Same as a Sunstar
Lens flare and sunstars are often grouped, but they are not the same optical effect.
A sunstar, sometimes called a starburst, is the pattern of rays that can appear around a small, bright light source when you use a relatively small aperture. Those rays come from diffraction around the aperture blades.
Lens flare comes from unwanted reflections or scattered light inside the optical system.
Both effects can appear in the same photograph. If you photograph the sun peeking around the edge of a building at f/16, you may capture a crisp sunstar and several flare spots at once.
That distinction matters because the solution depends on the effect you want to change.
Is Lens Flare Bad in Photography?
Not automatically.
Uncontrolled flare can lower contrast, weaken color, obscure detail, and create distracting shapes. For product photography, architecture, reproduction work, or any image where clarity matters, that may be a problem.
Creative photography is different.
A carefully placed flare can make backlighting feel warmer, add atmosphere to a portrait, create a nostalgic look, or introduce an imperfect quality that feels cinematic.
The most useful question is simple: does the flare make the photograph stronger?
If it covers a face, hides an important detail, or pulls attention away from the subject, move until it disappears. When it supports the mood, composition, or sense of light, it may deserve to stay.
How to Reduce Lens Flare
The fastest way to control unwanted flare is usually to change your camera position.
Move slightly left or right, lower or raise the camera, or let a tree branch, doorway, person, or building partially block the bright light source. Small movements can make a dramatic difference because flare depends heavily on the angle at which light enters the lens.
A lens hood is another simple solution. It helps block stray light from hitting the front element while letting the light needed for the photograph enter normally.
Keep the lens clean as well. Fingerprints, grease, water spots, and haze can scatter light and make bright scenes look worse.
If you are using a protective or creative filter, test the scene with the filter removed. Another glass surface in front of the lens can sometimes introduce extra reflections around strong light sources.
Practical tip: Take two frames whenever flare is questionable. Capture one version with the bright light exposed to the lens, then shade the lens or change position and make a cleaner version. Compare them later on a larger screen.

How to Create Lens Flare Intentionally
Deliberate lens flare works best when you treat the light source as part of the composition rather than pointing the camera toward the sun and hoping for something interesting.
Start by placing a bright light near the edge of the frame. Move slowly while watching the rear screen or electronic viewfinder. Notice how the flare shifts as you change your angle.
Next, partially hide the light source behind something. A tree trunk, flower, shoulder, building edge, leaf, or window frame can reduce the intensity and create a more controlled result.
Make several versions with the light fully visible, partly blocked, just outside the frame, and completely blocked. One image may have rich contrast, another may feel soft and nostalgic, while a third may contain a flare shape that lands in the wrong place.
This is where flare becomes a creative decision rather than an accident.

Does Aperture Change Lens Flare?
Aperture can change how bright light looks, but it is only one part of the equation.
Changing the f-stop alters the aperture opening and can influence how visible artifacts appear. Stopping down also makes sunstars more pronounced, which can make a bright-light photograph look dramatically different even when flare remains.
Rather than searching for one “best” flare aperture, make a short sequence at several f-stops while keeping the composition similar.

Does Focal Length Affect Lens Flare?
Focal length changes how much of the scene appears in the frame, which affects where bright light sources fall within your composition. A wide-angle lens may include the sun or several streetlights more easily, while a longer lens can make it easier to exclude some sources.
Still, focal length alone does not determine flare. Two lenses with the same focal length can react differently because their optical designs and coatings differ.

Try This Simple Lens Flare Test
Choose a bright light source and photograph it from several angles.
Place the light just outside the frame, then near one corner. Move it closer to the center, partially block it with an object, and finally shade the lens while keeping your hand out of the frame.
Compare the images for flare spots, haze, contrast, color, and shadow detail.
Repeat the exercise with another lens if you have one. The goal is not to decide which lens is “good” or “bad.” You are learning what each lens does when light becomes difficult.
