Back-button focus is often introduced as an advanced camera technique, but the basic idea is surprisingly simple. Instead of asking the shutter button to focus and take the photograph, you assign those jobs to two separate controls.
A button on the back of the camera activates autofocus. The shutter button takes the picture.
Separating those functions gives you direct control over when the camera starts focusing, continues tracking, and stops. More importantly, pressing the shutter no longer forces the camera to refocus at the wrong moment.

What Is Back-Button Focus?
Back-button focus is a camera setup that moves autofocus activation away from the shutter button and assigns it to a rear button.
Depending on your camera, that button may be labeled:
- AF-ON
- AE-L/AF-L
- AEL/AFL
- Fn
- Another customizable rear button
With the standard camera setup, pressing the shutter halfway activates autofocus. Pressing it fully takes the photograph.
Once back-button focus is enabled, the sequence changes:
- Press or hold the rear button to focus.
- Release the rear button when you want focusing to stop.
- Press the shutter button to take the photograph.
The shutter button becomes responsible only for capturing the image.
Think of this technique as focus on demand. Autofocus runs when you explicitly request it, not every time your finger touches the shutter.
Why Separate Focusing From the Shutter Button?
A traditional half-press works perfectly well in many situations. Problems arise when the camera refocuses after you have already achieved the sharpness you wanted.
Imagine photographing a person standing beside a window. You focus on the nearest eye, adjust the composition, and wait for the right expression. When you press the shutter again, the camera may focus on the window frame, the background, or another high-contrast detail.
Back-button focus prevents that unnecessary change.
Once focus is correct, release the rear button. You may then take several photographs without asking the camera to recalculate focus.
The separation also helps when tracking movement. Hold the rear button while the subject approaches, turns, runs, flies, or changes direction. Press the shutter whenever the expression, gesture, or action reaches its strongest point.
Instead of combining two decisions under one finger, you control them independently.
How Back-Button Focus Works With AF-S and AF-C
Understanding how the rear button relates to your autofocus mode makes the technique much easier to use.
Using Back-Button Focus With Single Autofocus
Single autofocus may be referred to as AF-S or One-Shot AF.
Press the rear button once to focus at a specific distance. After focus locks, release the button. That distance remains fixed until you activate autofocus again or manually adjust the lens.
This approach is useful for:
- Landscapes
- Architecture
- Still life
- Product photography
- Stationary portraits
- Carefully arranged compositions
Using Back-Button Focus With Continuous Autofocus
Continuous autofocus may appear as AF-C or AI Servo.
Hold the rear button to continuously update focus as the subject’s distance changes. Release the button, and autofocus stops.
Continuous AF combined with back-button focus works especially well for:
- Sports
- Birds in flight
- Wildlife
- Children playing
- Events
- Street photography
- Pets
- Unpredictable movement

How to Set Up Back-Button Focus on Your Camera
Exact menu names vary by manufacturer and camera model, but the setup usually involves two changes.
Step 1: Assign Autofocus to a Rear Button
Open the camera’s customization, control, button, or operation settings. Find the rear button you want to use and assign one of the following functions:
- AF-ON
- Autofocus start
- AF activation
- AF lock or AF start
- Metering and AF start
A dedicated AF-ON button is usually the simplest choice. Cameras without one can often use an AE-L/AF-L or function button instead.
Choose a control that sits comfortably beneath your thumb. You should be able to hold it while maintaining a stable grip.
Step 2: Remove Autofocus From the Shutter Button
This second step is essential.
Look for a setting related to shutter-button autofocus, AF activation, half-press of the shutter button, or metering start. Change the shutter button so that a half-press meters the scene without activating autofocus.
Afterward, test the setup:
- Point the camera toward a nearby subject.
- Half-press the shutter.
- Confirm that the lens does not refocus.
- Press the rear autofocus button.
- Watch for the focus point or confirmation indicator.
- Press the shutter fully to take the photograph.
When the shutter still activates autofocus, revisit the control settings. Assigning AF-ON without disabling shutter-button AF does not create true back-button focus.
Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Nikon Setup Differences
Camera menus vary by model and firmware version, so do not worry if your screen does not match another photographer’s instructions exactly.
Canon cameras typically place the relevant options in Custom Functions, Customize Buttons, or Shutter Button/AF-ON Button settings.
Sony models may list the rear-button function as AF On. Shutter-button autofocus can often be disabled through a setting named AF w/ Shutter.
Fujifilm cameras generally provide button assignments through Function or Button/Dial settings. Look for AF-ON and a separate shutter AF option.
Nikon bodies commonly include Custom Controls and AF Activation settings. Some models allow autofocus to be assigned to AF-ON, with AF-ON Only selected to activate it.
Search your manual using the terms “AF-ON,” “AF activation,” “custom controls,” or “shutter button autofocus.” Those phrases are usually more helpful than searching only for “back-button focus.”
The Simplest Way to Learn Back-Button Focus
Changing the menu setting takes only a few minutes. Rebuilding your finger habits takes longer.
At first, you will probably raise the camera, press the shutter halfway, and wonder why nothing is happening. That reaction is normal because your index finger has been trained to manage autofocus.
Begin with a stationary object in good light. A coffee mug, book, flowerpot, parked car, or garden ornament works well.
Try this exercise:
- Place the focus point over the subject.
- Press the rear button with your thumb.
- Release it once focus is confirmed.
- Recompose without touching the rear button.
- Take three photographs using only the shutter.
- Focus on something farther away.
- Repeat the sequence.
Next, practice with movement. Ask someone to walk toward you while you hold the back button in Continuous AF. Take short bursts as the distance changes.
Ten focused minutes of practice can be more useful than turning the setting on during an important event and hoping your hands remember what to do.
Use Back-Button Focus for Portraits
Portrait sessions often involve repeated expressions and small composition changes. Constant refocusing can slow the rhythm or cause the focus point to jump away from the eye.
For a stationary portrait, place the autofocus point over the nearest eye and press the rear button. Release it after focus locks, then wait for the expression you want.
Several frames can be taken without refocusing, provided the subject and camera remain at approximately the same distance.
Movement changes the situation. Even a person who appears still may sway slightly, lean forward, or turn the head. At a very wide aperture, those small shifts can cause the eye to fall outside the sharp area.
Use Continuous AF and eye detection when the subject is moving. Keep the rear button pressed while the camera tracks the eye, then release it only when you intentionally want focus to stop.

Use Back-Button Focus for Sports and Wildlife
Moving subjects are where this technique often feels most valuable.
Select Continuous AF, choose an appropriate tracking area, and hold the rear button while following the subject. Your thumb controls tracking, while your index finger controls timing.
If you are photographing a soccer player running through a crowded scene. Hold the rear button while the athlete approaches. When another player briefly crosses the frame, release the button to prevent the camera from immediately shifting focus to the obstruction. Resume autofocus once the main subject becomes clear again.
A similar method works when photographing wildlife through branches, fences, reeds, or grass. Removing your thumb from the focus button tells the camera to stop searching.
Bird photography provides another strong example. A perched bird can be focused once, allowing you to wait for a head turn without refocusing on the branch. During flight, continuous pressure keeps tracking active.

Use Back-Button Focus for Street and Event Photography
Street and event scenes can change before the camera has time to make a new decision.
One useful method is to focus at a chosen distance, release the rear button, and wait for someone to enter that area. Because the shutter no longer activates autofocus, the camera will not suddenly grab a sign, vehicle, or person closer to the lens.
During events, back-button focus can help you move smoothly between still and moving moments. Hold the button while someone walks down an aisle, release it when the person pauses, and continue taking photographs without immediately switching to manual focus.
This flexibility becomes especially valuable when a scene changes faster than you can navigate the camera menus.
Common Back-Button Focus Mistakes
Forgetting to Disable Shutter-Button Autofocus
When both controls activate AF, the shutter may undo the focus decision you made with the rear button. Confirm that the half-press no longer refocuses.
Releasing the Button During Subject Movement
Continuous AF updates focus only while the rear button remains pressed. Releasing it freezes focus at the last recorded distance.
Blaming Focus for Motion Blur
Perfect autofocus cannot freeze a subject moving during a long exposure. Increase the shutter speed when the subject, camera, or both are moving.
Focusing Once When the Distance Changes
A subject leaning toward the camera may leave a shallow depth of field. Press the rear button again or use continuous tracking.
Changing the Setup Before an Important Shoot
Do not test a completely new control method during a wedding, sporting event, wildlife trip, or paid portrait session. Practice until activating focus with your thumb becomes automatic.
Choosing an Uncomfortable Button
A control that requires an awkward grip can create fatigue and camera shake. Reassign autofocus to a more comfortable rear button when your camera allows it.
Do You Need Back-Button Focus With Modern Eye Detection?
Modern subject detection is remarkably capable, but it does not eliminate the value of choosing when to use autofocus.
Eye detection determines which features the camera should recognize. Back-button focus determines when the system is allowed to search, acquire, and track.
Both functions can work together:
- Enable detection of humans, animals, birds, or vehicles.
- Hold the rear button to begin tracking.
- Release it when an obstruction enters the frame.
- Press again to have the camera reacquire the subject.
Buying a new camera is not required, however. Back-button focus is available on many DSLR and mirrorless models, including older bodies with customizable controls.
When Back-Button Focus May Not Be the Best Choice
No camera technique is mandatory.
Traditional shutter-button autofocus may be more practical when:
- You frequently hand the camera to other people
- You prefer a simple point-and-shoot response
- Your camera lacks comfortable custom controls
- You rarely photograph movement
- Separating the controls slows you down
- You switch between several shared camera bodies
Some photographers use back-button focus for sports and wildlife but return to standard autofocus for casual travel or family photographs. Others commit to it across every genre.
Choose the method that makes your response faster and your results more consistent. Keeping a technique simply because it is considered advanced does not improve your photography.
How to Know Whether Back-Button Focus Is Helping
Test the setup for several sessions rather than judging it after five minutes.
Review your images and ask:
- Did the camera refocus less often at the wrong moment?
- Was it easier to track movement?
- Could you stop focus when something crossed the frame?
- Did recomposing feel more controlled?
- Were you forgetting to press the rear button?
- Did your hand remain comfortable?
- Did the number of sharply focused photographs improve?
Compare those results with a similar session using shutter-button autofocus.
The best focusing system is not the one with the most complicated setup. It is the one that helps you react without thinking about the controls.

Your thumb tells the camera when to focus. Releasing the button tells it when to stop. Meanwhile, the shutter remains ready to capture the moment without unexpectedly changing the focus distance.
Stationary subjects can be focused once and photographed repeatedly. Moving subjects can be tracked continuously. Distracting foreground objects become easier to manage because autofocus can be paused instantly.
The technique may feel awkward during the first few sessions. Once the new movement becomes familiar, many photographers find that focusing feels calmer, faster, and more predictable.
Set it up carefully, practice with simple subjects, and evaluate the results in the situations you photograph most often. Back-button focus is worth keeping when it gives you greater control, fewer missed moments, and more confidence every time you press the shutter.
