The night of August 27 into the early hours of August 28, 2026 offers photographers another extraordinary reason to look up. A deep partial lunar eclipse will sweep across the Moon, gradually transforming an ordinary bright lunar disk into a dramatically shadowed world that may take on shades of copper, rust, orange, and deep red.
You do not need a DSLR, mirrorless camera, telescope, or collection of expensive lenses to photograph it.
An iPhone can create a striking record of the August 2026 lunar eclipse if you understand one important point: the correct technique changes as the eclipse progresses.
At the beginning of the night, the Moon is extremely bright compared with the surrounding sky. During the deeper stages of the eclipse, much less light reaches the lunar surface. An exposure that works beautifully before the shadow arrives may fail near maximum eclipse.
Instead of searching for one magical iPhone setting, treat the eclipse as a changing-light photography session.
That approach can make the difference between a tiny white circle in a black sky and an eclipse photograph with recognizable lunar detail, color, atmosphere, and a genuine sense of place.

When Is the August 2026 Lunar Eclipse?
The partial lunar eclipse occurs during the night of August 27 to 28, 2026, although exact times and visibility depend on where you live.
In New York, the eclipse begins on the evening of August 27, with the more noticeable partial phase starting later that night. Maximum eclipse occurs shortly after midnight on August 28.
Photographers in other locations should check the eclipse timing for their city before heading outside. Your local beginning, maximum, and ending times, Moon position, and altitude can differ considerably.
Give yourself plenty of setup time before the partial phase starts. Arriving early lets you choose a composition, mount the iPhone, clean the lenses, check exposure, and make test photographs while the Moon is still easy to see.
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse does not require a solar filter or eclipse glasses for safe viewing or photography. You are photographing reflected sunlight from the Moon rather than looking directly at the Sun.
The Best iPhone Setup for the Lunar Eclipse
Use this as a starting point rather than a rigid formula:
- Camera mode: Photo
- Flash: Off
- Lens: Optical telephoto if available
- Digital zoom: Keep to a minimum
- Exposure: Reduce while the Moon is bright
- Focus: Lock on the Moon when possible
- Night mode: Usually off or short while the Moon is bright; reconsider as the eclipse deepens
- Support: Tripod or another stable surface
- Timer: 3 seconds
- File format: ProRAW when available and extensive editing is planned
- Live Photos: Optional
- Grid: On
- Level: On
Not every iPhone offers the same cameras, optical zoom options, ProRAW support, or Night mode controls. Work with the features your model provides rather than trying to copy settings from a different phone.
Start With the Telephoto Camera While the Moon Is Bright
The Moon appears surprisingly small in an iPhone photograph.
If your iPhone includes a true optical telephoto camera, begin there while the uneclipsed Moon is still bright enough to provide plenty of light.
Depending on the model, you may have a 2x, 3x, or 5x option.
Optical reach lets the Moon occupy more of the frame without relying as heavily on digital enlargement. Even then, do not expect the lunar disk to fill the entire screen.
Avoid pinching aggressively to reach extreme digital zoom levels. Heavy digital magnification can exaggerate softness, atmospheric shimmer, camera movement, and computational artifacts.
No optical telephoto camera?
Try the 1x Main camera and create a wider environmental composition instead. Include a skyline, tree, church steeple, mountain, rooftop, bridge, monument, or another foreground element, then crop moderately afterward.
A smaller Moon inside a compelling composition can produce a far stronger photograph than a heavily enlarged but blurry Moon floating alone in darkness.

Lower the Exposure Before the Eclipse Gets Dark
One of the most common iPhone Moon-photography mistakes happens before the eclipse has even begun.
The phone sees a mostly black scene surrounding a relatively small bright subject and tries to brighten everything. As a result, the Moon becomes a featureless white disk.
Do not expose for the dark sky.
Tap directly on the Moon. Once the exposure control appears, drag the sun icon down until visible texture begins to return to the lunar surface.
Experiment with several levels.
Take one photograph, lower the exposure a little more, then make another. Zoom in on your photographs afterward and look for recognizable detail rather than judging exposure by the screen’s overall brightness.
The surrounding sky should look dark.
Preserving lunar detail matters far more than making space appear brighter.
Use AE/AF Lock, but Do Not Forget to Recheck It
Press and hold on the Moon until AE/AF LOCK appears.
This can help stop the iPhone from repeatedly changing focus and exposure while you refine the composition.
However, a lunar eclipse is not a constant-light situation.
As Earth’s shadow advances, the brightness changes significantly. An exposure locked during the bright early phase may leave the Moon dramatically underexposed later.
Reassess the photograph throughout the event.
Unlock, tap the Moon again, adjust exposure, and create another series whenever its appearance changes noticeably.
Think of the night as several mini photography sessions rather than one continuous set of identical exposures.
Do Not Automatically Use the Longest Night Mode Exposure
This is where photographing a lunar eclipse differs from photographing stars or a meteor shower.
When photographing a dark star field, a longer Night mode exposure can gather useful light.
The Moon is different.
During the bright portions of the eclipse, a long Night mode capture may collect more light than you need and remove the surface detail you are trying to preserve.
Start with Night mode off, or use a relatively short capture while the Moon remains bright.
As Earth’s shadow covers more of the lunar surface and the Moon becomes substantially darker, Night mode may become more useful.
Near maximum eclipse, compare both approaches if your iPhone allows it.
One photograph might use a shorter exposure to maintain better definition. Another could use a longer Night mode capture to reveal more of the reddish shadow.
That comparison is much more useful than assuming longer always means better.

Consider Switching Back to the 1x Camera as the Eclipse Deepens
Here is a technique many photographers may overlook.
Your telephoto camera can be extremely useful when the Moon is bright, but the iPhone’s 1x Main camera often has stronger low-light capabilities.
As the Moon becomes darker near maximum eclipse, compare your telephoto camera with the Main camera.
The Moon will look smaller at 1x, yet the file may contain cleaner detail, less noise, or better color information under difficult lighting.
This creates a useful tradeoff:
Bright Moon: prioritize optical reach.
Deep eclipse: consider prioritizing light gathering and image quality.
Take both versions rather than deciding in advance.
You can crop the stronger Main-camera photograph afterward if necessary.
Put the iPhone on a Tripod
A tripod becomes increasingly valuable as the eclipse darkens.
Even minor movement becomes visible when you combine telephoto magnification with lower light. Pressing the shutter can also move the phone slightly at the moment of capture.
Mount the iPhone securely and activate the three-second timer.
No tripod available?
A railing, table, windowsill, wall, or other solid surface works if the phone can be positioned safely and stay completely still.

Photograph the Eclipse in Stages
Don’t focus only on the maximum eclipse.
One of the best ways to document the event is to photograph the Moon repeatedly as Earth’s shadow moves across it.
Try making photographs during:
- The normal full Moon before the partial phase
- The first visible bite of Earth’s shadow
- Approximately one-quarter coverage
- Approximately half coverage
- The deeper partial phase
- Maximum eclipse
- The Moon emerging from shadow.
Keep the framing reasonably consistent if you eventually want to create an eclipse progression.
A tripod makes this easier, although the Moon’s apparent position will continue moving across the sky during the night.
Leave extra space around it rather than composing too tightly.
Capture a Wide Photograph Too
Close photographs are not the only ones worth making.
Step back visually and photograph what the eclipse looked like from your location.
Include buildings, trees, water, mountains, people watching, a recognizable skyline, or another environmental feature.
A lunar eclipse above the Manhattan skyline tells a different story from the same Moon photographed over a quiet rural field.
Reflections can also be beautiful when the Moon is high enough, and you are photographing near a lake, river, harbor, or wet pavement.
Wide compositions add scale and atmosphere to an astronomical event that could otherwise look identical no matter where you photograph it.

Try ProRAW if Your iPhone Supports It
Photographers with a compatible iPhone may want to capture key phases in Apple ProRAW.
RAW-based files give you more flexibility when working with:
- Shadows
- Highlights
- White balance
- Noise reduction
- Color
- Local contrast
- Fine sharpening
That extra latitude can be especially valuable during the darker red stages of the eclipse.
However, you don’t need to photograph hundreds of nearly identical ProRAW files. They require considerably more storage than ordinary photographs.
Capture RAW selectively around the strongest stages and use the normal format for additional documentary frames.
How to Edit Your iPhone Lunar Eclipse Photos
Resist the temptation to turn the Moon into a glowing orange ball.
Begin with restrained adjustments.
Lower Highlights if bright portions have lost texture. Add modest Definition or Sharpness only when the file supports it. Raise Shadows carefully during the darker stages, since aggressive recovery can expose noise.
Adjust Black Point or Contrast if the night sky looks gray rather than naturally dark.
Color requires even more restraint.
During deeper eclipse phases, the Moon may naturally develop copper, rust, reddish, or orange tones because sunlight reaching it has passed through Earth’s atmosphere. Preserve those colors without pushing saturation until they become artificial.
Crop last.
A heavy crop magnifies every weakness in a smartphone file, including noise and softness, so stop before the photo looks brittle or overly processed.
Turn Your Best Eclipse Photograph Into a Print
An eclipse sequence, red partial Moon, or wide lunar landscape can make a striking print when you prepare the file carefully.
Before ordering an enlargement, check the photograph’s pixel dimensions and consider how much you cropped. Smartphone photographs that look beautifully sharp on a small screen do not always support extremely large prints after substantial cropping.

Common iPhone Lunar Eclipse Problems
The Moon Looks Like a White Circle
Tap the Moon and lower the exposure until texture becomes visible. Do not try to brighten the surrounding sky.
The Moon Is Too Small
Use an optical telephoto camera if your iPhone has one. Otherwise, create a wider composition and crop moderately afterward instead of using extreme digital zoom.
The Moon Looks Blurry
Stabilize the phone, use the timer, clean the lens, avoid excessive digital magnification, and take several photographs.
My Telephoto Photograph Looks Noisy During Maximum Eclipse
Compare it with the 1x Main camera. The larger, stronger Main camera may produce a cleaner file when the eclipsed Moon becomes considerably darker.
Night Mode Makes the Moon Look Soft
Shorten the Night mode duration or turn it off temporarily. A long exposure isn’t always the best choice for a bright astronomical subject.
The Red Color Looks Weak
Do not immediately increase saturation. Check exposure and white balance first, then make subtle color adjustments during editing.
Prepare Your iPhone Before August 27
Clean every camera lens before leaving home.
Charge the phone completely and bring a portable power bank if you expect to photograph for several hours.
Check available storage.
Turn on Grid and Level.
Pack the tripod and phone mount.
Confirm the eclipse times for your exact location.
Choose a location with a clear view of the Moon.
Check the weather forecast.
Photograph the ordinary Moon on a night before the eclipse so you can practice exposure control, lens selection, focusing, and tripod setup.
Most importantly, learn where the controls are before the event begins.
The eclipse isn’t the time to learn how to lock focus or find Night mode.
Learning how to photograph the August 2026 lunar eclipse with an iPhone is less about finding one perfect setting and more about responding to the Moon as its brightness changes.
Begin by protecting detail in the bright lunar surface.
Use optical telephoto reach while there’s still enough light. Lower the exposure instead of allowing the iPhone to turn the Moon white. Stabilize the phone, make photographs throughout the progression, and reconsider Night mode as Earth’s shadow becomes deeper.
Near maximum eclipse, do something many photographers may not think to try: compare the telephoto camera with the 1x Main camera. Giving up some magnification may reward you with a cleaner photograph in lower light.
Finally, do not photograph only the Moon.
Show where you were.
Include the skyline, landscape, reflections, silhouettes, architecture, or people experiencing the night around you. Those details can transform a technically successful eclipse photograph into an image that tells a story.
