Clear skies may look pleasant, but they do not always produce the most compelling sunrise and sunset photographs. Storm clouds introduce texture, movement, contrast, reflected color, and a sense of anticipation that can transform an ordinary horizon into a dramatic scene.
Learning how to photograph stormy sunrises and sunsets is not about chasing dangerous weather. The most rewarding opportunities often appear along the edge of a weather system, shortly before rain arrives, after a storm has passed, or while distant clouds remain safely separated from your location.
Success depends on more than finding dark clouds. You must recognize where the light may appear, protect the brightest highlights, respond to rapidly changing conditions, and choose a composition that turns the weather into part of the story.
Above all, storm photography requires good judgment. No photograph is worth remaining outside during lightning, damaging wind, flash flooding, or another dangerous weather event.

Understand What Makes a Sunrise or Sunset Look Stormy
A stormy sky does not need to contain lightning. In fact, some of the most beautiful weather photographs are created when the active storm is distant or has already moved away.

Look for a combination of:
- Broken or layered cloud cover
- A possible opening near the horizon
- Rain that is ending or remaining in the distance

Weather forecasts cannot guarantee a dramatic sky. Conditions can change within minutes, which is why flexibility remains essential. Prepare an alternative location that offers a clear view from inside a substantial building or near a safe, hard-topped vehicle.
Put Safety Before the Photograph
Stormy skies can be photographed safely, but active thunderstorms demand immediate caution. When thunder is audible, lightning is close enough to strike, and the National Weather Service advises moving into a substantial building or enclosed hard-topped vehicle. Open shelters, porches, isolated trees, beaches, fields, and small sheds do not provide reliable lightning protection.
Remain in safe shelter for at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder. Rain ending does not mean the lightning danger has passed.
Never enter floodwater on foot or in a vehicle. Water depth, road damage, and current strength can be difficult to judge, especially before sunrise or after sunset. Flash flooding may also develop rapidly during heavy rain.
Before setting up, identify your safest exit. Leave immediately when conditions become threatening, even if the sky is beginning to look spectacular.
Use Camera Settings That Can Adapt Quickly
There is no single perfect group of settings for every stormy sunrise or sunset. Light levels may change rapidly as clouds cover and uncover the sun, so your settings must remain flexible.
A practical starting point is:
- File format: RAW
- Shooting mode: Manual or Aperture Priority
- Aperture: f/8 to f/11
- ISO: 100 to 400 with a tripod
- Shutter speed: Adjust according to the light and movement
- White balance: Daylight or Auto
- Metering mode: Evaluative, Matrix, or Multi
- Focus mode: Single autofocus for a stationary landscape
- Drive mode: Continuous when light or weather is changing quickly

Protect the Brightest Opening in the Clouds
Stormy landscapes can look dark overall while containing a very bright opening near the sun. Camera meters may try to brighten the surrounding clouds, which can cause the illuminated area to lose color and detail.
Expose for the brightest meaningful portion of the sky rather than the average brightness of the entire scene. Check the histogram and highlight warning after important frames. A large spike pressed against the right edge can indicate that bright tonal information is being clipped.
Some small specular highlights may be impossible to preserve, especially when the sun itself appears in the frame. Concentrate on retaining texture and color in the surrounding clouds.
When the foreground becomes too dark, use exposure bracketing. Capture three or five frames at different brightness levels while keeping the aperture and focus constant. Bracketing can preserve both the luminous sky and shadowed land when the scene exceeds the tonal range of a single exposure. Avoid brightening the exposure simply because the camera preview looks dark. Screens can be misleading in dim surroundings, making a properly exposed image appear darker than it really is.
Watch for Light Beneath the Storm
The most dramatic photographs often occur when low-angle sunlight travels beneath a cloud layer.
Look for a narrow band of clear sky near the horizon. As the sun enters that opening, it may illuminate the underside of the clouds, strike a distant building, light a mountain ridge, or turn falling rain gold.
Instead of pointing the camera directly at the sun, turn toward the parts of the scene receiving its light. A glowing field beneath dark clouds may be more expressive than the horizon itself.
Other possibilities include:
- Waves illuminated under a dark cloud ceiling
- One building catching warm light
- A bright strip appearing between land and clouds
- Sunlight crossing a wet street
- Rain glowing against a darker background
- A distant hillside emerging from shadow
These fleeting contrasts may last for only a few seconds. Keep your camera ready and review settings before the light arrives.
Make the Clouds Part of the Composition
Storm clouds should not be treated as empty background. Their direction, shape, and visual weight can guide the entire composition.
Cloud bands may act as leading lines toward the horizon. Curved storm fronts can frame a bright opening, while repeating layers can create depth. Vertical rain shafts add another structural element by connecting the clouds to the landscape.
When the sky is the strongest subject, lower the horizon and allow the clouds to occupy most of the frame. Simplify the foreground so it does not compete with their shape or color.
A stronger foreground may deserve more space when it includes:
- Reflective puddles

A moderate telephoto lens can make the rain appear more prominent by narrowing the field of view and compressing distant layers. Wide-angle lenses are better suited to showing the relationship between the storm, landscape, and surrounding sky.

Use Reflections After the Rain
Wet ground can turn an ordinary foreground into one of the strongest parts of the photograph.
Puddles, pavement, rocks, rooftops, and shallow shoreline pools may reflect the colored sky. Lowering the camera can increase the reflection’s visual importance and reduce distracting surroundings.
Before stepping closer, confirm that the ground is stable and not affected by flooding, fast-moving water, or slippery debris.

A fitted camera rain cover helps shield the camera body and lens from light rain or spray. Keep several microfiber lens cloths in separate dry pockets because one saturated cloth quickly becomes ineffective. A lens hood can reduce the amount of rain reaching the front element while also helping control stray light.
Between photographs, point the camera downward and keep the front element covered. Avoid changing lenses in rain, blowing spray, or dusty wind.
Inspect the lens frequently. Water droplets may appear as blurry circles, streaks, or areas of reduced contrast, particularly when a bright sky or light source is in the frame.
