A face can look perfectly natural in front of you and strangely stretched on the iPhone screen a moment later. The nose may appear larger, the forehead may seem too prominent, or someone near the edge of a group photo may look wider than everyone else.
Camera distance, lens choice, subject placement, and the phone’s angle usually create these changes. Since an iPhone can include a wide scene from a short distance, it is easy to photograph a face from a viewpoint that exaggerates depth.
Most facial distortion can be reduced before the shutter is pressed. The eight methods below work for selfies, headshots, family pictures, travel portraits, and group photographs.

Why Do Faces Look Distorted in iPhone Photos?
Two different effects are often described as distortion.
Perspective distortion happens when the camera is too close to a three-dimensional subject. Features nearest the lens appear proportionally larger, while features farther away seem smaller. In a close-up selfie, the nose is closer to the camera than the ears, so the photograph can exaggerate the difference.
Optical distortion arises from how a lens renders a scene. Wide and Ultra Wide views can stretch shapes toward the outer areas of the frame, particularly when people are positioned near the edges.
Focal length changes framing, but camera position creates facial perspective. A tighter lens view encourages you to move farther away, which is why a 2x or telephoto portrait often looks more natural than an arm ’s-length selfie.
Mirrored previews may also make a face feel unfamiliar because most people know their reflection better than the non-mirrored view. Mirroring reverses left and right, but it does not enlarge a nose or stretch a cheek.
1. Increase the Distance Between the iPhone and the Face
Moving the camera farther away is the most effective correction. Even a modest increase in distance can reduce the difference between the parts of the face closest to and farthest from the lens.
For a head-and-shoulders portrait, avoid filling the frame by bringing the phone inches from the subject. Step back, leave extra room around the head, and crop afterward if necessary. Placing the phone on a stable support also improves selfies by removing the limits of your arm.
Try three distances while keeping the expression and camera height the same. Usually, the closest frame shows the strongest exaggeration, while the more distant versions render the face with calmer proportions.
2. Avoid 0.5x for Conventional Portraits
The 0.5x Ultra Wide camera is useful for interiors, architecture, large groups in tight spaces, and intentionally dramatic images. It is rarely the best choice for a conventional close portrait.
Switch to 1x for an environmental portrait or choose 2x, 3x, or another available telephoto option when space permits. Move backward until the composition feels comfortable. On supported Pro models, a 35mm Main camera setting can provide a slightly tighter starting point.
The improvement does not come solely from magnification. Selecting a tighter view encourages a greater camera-to-subject distance, creating a more natural facial perspective. When working indoors, backing into a doorway may help more than installing another editing app.
3. Keep Faces Away From the Outer Edges
Wide photographs often appear most stretched at the edges and corners. A person in the center may appear normal, while people at the ends of the row look broader or pulled outward.
Place the most important face near the middle of the frame. For a group portrait, leave breathing room on both sides rather than pressing people against the edges. Cropping a little later is safer than tightly compressing every face against an edge.
When 0.5x is unavoidable, keep people within the central region and let the extra angle of view collect the room or landscape around them. Check the preview carefully and reposition the group as soon as you notice stretching.
4. Hold the Camera Level With the Middle of the Face
Camera height changes which features sit closest to the lens. A phone held very high can emphasize the forehead, while a low viewpoint may enlarge the jaw, chin, or nostrils.
For a natural headshot, place the camera at eye level or centered on the face. Keep the back of the phone as parallel to the facial plane as practical. Small adjustments are fine, but aggressive tilting can cause one side of the head to dominate the other.
Full-length portraits need similar care. Position the phone around torso height and hold it upright. Tilting downward from above can make the head appear large and the legs short.
Enable Grid and Level under Settings > Camera to help with alignment. Straight framing will not replace proper distance, but it prevents another layer of distortion.
5. Arrange Group Portraits on a Shallow Curve
Group photographs become difficult when everyone stands in a straight line in front of a wide-angle camera. People at the ends are farther from the lens and are also pushed into the areas most likely to stretch.
Create a shallow arc that follows the camera’s field of view. Bring those at the ends slightly forward, keep every face at a similar distance from the iPhone, and avoid placing anyone directly in a corner. Staggered rows can work when the group is large.
Ask everyone to lean slightly toward the center without turning their faces too far. Whenever possible, move the iPhone back and use 1x. Changing the arrangement often yields better results than immediately switching to 0.5x.
6. Make Sure Lens Correction Is Turned On
Supported iPhones include Lens Correction for photographs taken with the front camera or Ultra Wide camera. The feature is normally enabled, but it is worth checking when selfies or group pictures repeatedly look unusual.
Open Settings, select Camera, then tap Lens Correction. Turn it on, then repeat a controlled test using the same subject, distance, and composition.
Lens Correction can make wide-angle photographs look more natural, but it cannot fully undo the perspective distortion caused by holding the phone too close. Treat it as a finishing correction rather than permission to photograph a face from inches away.
7. Use a Tripod, Stand, or Remote for Self-Portraits
Arm’s-length selfies force the camera to remain close. Removing the phone from your hand gives you simultaneous control over distance, height, and alignment.
Place the iPhone on a tripod, clamp, or stable stand. Set it several feet away, select 1x or a tighter view, and use the timer, Apple Watch camera control, or a Bluetooth shutter remote control.

8. Correct Existing Photos With Restraint
A finished photograph can sometimes be improved, although editing has limits. Severe close-range perspective cannot be completely reversed because the camera did not record the face from a more distant viewpoint.
Open the image in Photos, tap Edit, choose Crop, and try the Vertical or Horizontal perspective controls in small amounts. These tools are most useful when the phone is tilted or the frame feels skewed. Cropping away stretched outer edges may also help when a face sits near a corner.
Avoid aggressive face reshaping. Pulling individual features with liquify-style tools can replace one distortion with another, potentially altering a person’s identity. Subtle corrections usually look more believable.
Compare the edit with the original several times. When the result still feels unnatural, retaking the photograph from farther away will be more convincing.
A Fast Test to Find the Cause
When a face looks wrong, change one variable at a time:
- Retake the photograph from farther away.
- Switch from 0.5x to 1x or a tighter view.
- Move the face toward the center.
- Place the phone level with the face.
- Check Lens Correction.
- Compare the front and rear cameras from the same distance.
This sequence reveals whether distance, lens choice, placement, or phone angle is responsible. If one camera appears unusually warped at any distance, clean the lens, remove any accessories covering the camera area, restart the Camera app, and test again.
Distortion that appears in every image, even when the phone is level and several feet away, may justify contacting Apple Support.
Prepare Your Best iPhone Portraits for Printing
A corrected portrait may look excellent on the phone, but still needs enough resolution for the print size you plan to order. Cropping removes pixels, so a tight crop from a wide group photograph may not support a large enlargement.
