Start With This Quick Troubleshooting Check
Before searching through every page of the menu, check the camera’s visible controls.
Confirm that:
- The exposure-compensation dial is at 0
- The focus selector is on S, C, or M as intended
- The aperture ring is in the expected position
- The shutter-speed dial has not been moved accidentally
- The built-in ND filter is off unless needed
- The correct custom setting bank is active
- The drive mode is set appropriately
- The battery has sufficient power
- The memory card has available space
Next, turn the camera off, wait several seconds, and turn it on again. Temporary control or display problems can sometimes disappear after a simple restart.
Avoid changing five settings simultaneously. Adjust one option, take a test photograph, and compare the result. This approach makes it much easier to identify the actual cause.
Why Are My Fujifilm X100VI Photos Blurry Even With IBIS?
In-body image stabilization reduces blur caused by small camera movements. It cannot freeze a walking person, moving vehicle, swaying flower, or active pet.
Begin by inspecting the type of blur.
Camera shake usually softens the entire frame in the same direction. Subject movement often affects only the moving person or object. A missed focus makes another part of the photograph sharper than the intended subject.

- Use at least 1/125 second for everyday handheld photography
- Increase to 1/250 second for walking people
- Choose 1/500 second or faster for energetic movement
- Use AF-S for stationary subjects
- Switch to AF-C when the subject changes distance

Opening the aperture or raising ISO may be preferable to allowing the shutter speed to become too slow. A sharp photograph at ISO 3200 is usually more useful than a blurred photograph at ISO 400.

Why Does the X100VI Focus on the Background?
Autofocus often chooses the area with the clearest contrast. A bright sign, patterned wall, or sharply defined building can attract focus away from a person standing in front of it.
Single Point AF gives you the greatest control. Move the focus frame over the subject with the focus lever, then rotate the rear command dial to slightly enlarge the frame when the original point is too small.
Wide/Tracking can work well for movement, but it gives the camera more authority over its selections. When the foreground subject is small or partially obscured, the background may appear easier to recognize.
Try focusing on:
- A person’s eye
- The edge of a face
- Lettering on a product
- A textured area of clothing
- A clearly defined architectural detail
Low-contrast surfaces, reflections, fog, darkness, and subjects behind glass can challenge autofocus. Focus lock or manual focus may be more dependable in those situations.

Why Is Face or Eye Detection Not Working?
Face and Eye Detection requires a sufficiently visible, well-lit face. Sunglasses, hats, hair, shadows, side profiles, and small subjects can prevent reliable recognition.
First, confirm that Face and Eye Detection is enabled. Move closer or recompose so the face occupies more of the frame. Holding the camera at a reasonably level angle can also improve detection.
Subject Detection should generally remain off when photographing people. That system is designed for subjects such as animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes, and trains. Activating it unnecessarily can complicate the camera’s focusing priorities.
During group portraits, the camera may select a different face than the one you want. Use the focus lever or touch controls to choose the intended person, or temporarily switch to Single Point AF.
Eye Detection is helpful, but it should not completely replace checking the focus frame before pressing the shutter.
Why Are My Photographs Too Dark or Too Bright?
Unexpected exposure often begins with a physical control rather than a menu setting.
Check the exposure-compensation dial first. A value such as −1 can make an entire sequence noticeably darker, while +1 may wash out bright scenes.
The built-in ND filter is another common cause of dark photographs. It reduces the amount of light reaching the sensor and is useful when shooting with a wide aperture in bright conditions. Indoors or at night, leaving it enabled can force the camera to use a slower shutter speed or a higher ISO.
For overexposed photographs, inspect:
- Positive exposure compensation
- A very wide aperture in strong sunlight
- Bright highlights exceeding the camera’s available range
- An inappropriate shutter-speed setting
- Metering influenced by a dark background

Why Is the Camera Using Such a High ISO?
Auto ISO raises sensitivity when the selected aperture and available light cannot maintain an acceptable shutter speed.
A high ISO does not automatically mean the camera is malfunctioning. It may be protecting the photograph from motion blur.
Check whether:
- The minimum shutter speed is set unusually high
- The aperture is too narrow for the available light
- The built-in ND filter is active
- The scene is darker than it appears to your eyes
- A different Auto ISO bank or custom setting is selected
For ordinary handheld photography, a minimum shutter speed around 1/125 second provides a useful starting point. Street activity or moving people may require 1/250 second, which naturally causes ISO to rise in dim light.

Why Does the X100VI Pause After Taking a Photograph?
A short delay after each exposure is often caused by image processing.
Clarity values other than 0 require additional processing before the photograph can be saved. Long Exposure Noise Reduction also increases saving time because the camera must process the file after a long exposure.
To test the cause:
- Set Clarity to 0.
- Turn Long Exposure Noise Reduction off temporarily.
- Select Single Frame drive mode.
- Take another photograph.
- Compare the saving time.
RAW and JPEG files, as well as long bursts, also place greater demands on the memory card. A damaged, nearly full, or slow card may create additional delays.

Never remove the battery or memory card while the indicator lamp shows that files are still being written.

Why Is the Built-In Flash Grayed Out or Not Firing?
The built-in flash cannot operate with every shutter and drive configuration.
Switch away from the electronic shutter and use Mechanical Shutter or Mechanical + Electronic. Next, confirm that the camera is in Single Frame mode rather than continuous shooting or bracketing.
Other items to inspect include:
- Built-In Flash is turned on
- Flash mode is not set to Off
- Sound & Flash is enabled
- The battery has adequate charge
- The flash window is not covered
- The subject is within the flash’s practical range
A shutter speed above the available flash-sync range can also create problems. Select a slower speed and take another test photograph.
The built-in flash works best as gentle fill light for nearby subjects. It is not designed to illuminate a large room, distant building, or broad outdoor scene.
Why Do Indoor Photographs Have Dark Bands?
Horizontal bands often appear when the electronic shutter is used under flickering LED, fluorescent, or artificial lighting.
Although the room may look continuously illuminated, many lights pulse rapidly. The electronic shutter reads the sensor progressively, allowing different parts of the frame to record different points in the lighting cycle.
Switch to the mechanical shutter first. Changing the shutter speed can also help, particularly when photographing screens, signs, stages, offices, gyms, or indoor events.
Flicker Reduction and Flickerless Shutter Speed settings may improve results in compatible exposure modes. Always take several test photographs before an important assignment because two light fixtures in the same room may flicker at different rates.
Why Do Moving Subjects Look Bent or Distorted?
Electronic shutters can create rolling-shutter distortion. A moving vehicle may appear stretched, a rotating wheel may look misshapen, or vertical architecture may appear to lean when the camera is moved quickly.
This effect occurs because the entire sensor is not read at precisely the same instant.
Choose the mechanical shutter when photographing:
- Fast-moving vehicles
- Sports
- Rapidly walking people
- Moving trains
- Quick camera pans
- Subjects with rotating parts
Mechanical + Electronic is convenient for general use, but the camera may switch to the electronic shutter when the selected exposure exceeds the mechanical shutter’s limits. Review the shutter indicator when distortion appears unexpectedly.
Why Does the Viewfinder Look Noisy in Low Light?
Visible grain or mottling in the electronic viewfinder does not necessarily appear in the final photograph.
In very dark conditions, the camera increases display gain so that you can see and compose the scene. That amplified preview can look noisier than the recorded file.
Take a test photograph and review it at normal magnification. If the saved image looks clean enough, the viewfinder’s appearance is not a fault.

Why Did My Custom Setting or Film Recipe Change?
The X100VI stores seven custom setting banks, C1 through C7. Changes may be saved automatically depending on the Auto Update Custom Setting option.
When a recipe appears different, verify:
- The correct C1 through C7 bank is selected
- Auto Update Custom Setting has not overwritten previous choices
- White balance and white-balance shift match the original recipe
- Dynamic Range, Clarity, Grain, and Color Chrome settings are correct
- The camera is not displaying a RAW file differently from the finished JPEG
- Exposure and lighting have not changed dramatically
Film simulations influence color and contrast, but they cannot make two completely different lighting conditions look identical. Photographing under daylight, warm household bulbs, and green fluorescent lighting will produce different results, even when the same recipe is used.
Record important recipes in a note or photograph the menu pages before making changes.
When Should You Reset the Fujifilm X100VI?
A reset should be a later step rather than the first response to a problem.
Before resetting:
- Photograph or write down important menu settings.
- Record custom recipes.
- Back up photographs from the memory card.
- Confirm that the battery is fully charged.
- Test the camera with another formatted memory card when possible.
Resetting can help when several menu choices have become difficult to trace. It will not repair a damaged card, a dirty lens, a failing battery, impact damage, or a hardware fault.
Contact Fujifilm support if the camera repeatedly freezes, displays persistent error messages, fails with more than one battery or card, produces unusual mechanical sounds, or continues to malfunction after a documented reset.
Check the Finished File Before Printing
Once the capture problem has been corrected, inspect the photograph at 100 percent magnification. Confirm that the intended subject is sharp, highlights retain useful detail, and noise reduction has not erased important texture.
