That combination of stillness and extraordinary speed makes dragonfly photography different from ordinary macro photography.
No single camera setup works for every moment.
A perched dragonfly needs enough depth of field to preserve the eyes, thorax, and intricate wing structure. Once it takes flight, shutter speed and autofocus suddenly become far more important. When a dragonfly begins hovering, you have another opportunity entirely, because you can combine fast action settings with much more deliberate framing.
The best camera settings for dragonfly photography therefore depend on what the insect is doing.
This guide gives you practical starting settings for perched dragonflies, hovering dragonflies, and dragonflies in flight, along with focusing, exposure, lens, and lighting techniques that can dramatically increase your keeper rate.

That distinction matters.
A flower will remain where you compose it. A dragonfly might stay motionless for thirty seconds and then disappear from your frame in an instant.
Very close focusing also creates extremely shallow depth of field. If the aperture is too wide, the eyes might look sharp while much of the wings become soft. Although the insect may appear stationary, it can twitch its head, shift its wings, move its legs, or sway with the plant beneath it. Even a small breeze can move a reed enough to soften a close-up photograph.
Increase the shutter speed toward 1/800 or 1/1000 second when:
- The dragonfly is moving frequently
- Wind is moving the perch
- You are using a longer lens
- Magnification is high
- You are shooting handheld
- You want maximum consistency
Under calm early-morning conditions, you may be able to work more slowly, particularly if the dragonfly is inactive.
Do not sacrifice sharpness to keep ISO 100. Modern cameras can produce excellent files at moderate ISO settings, but you can’t fully repair motion blur later.
Best Aperture for Perched Dragonflies
Aperture matters most when you move close.
Try f/5.6 to f/8 for a dragonfly photographed from the side. This range usually provides a useful compromise between subject detail and a pleasantly softened background.
Move toward f/8 to f/11 when the dragonfly is positioned diagonally toward the camera. You may need more depth of field because its eyes, body, and wings sit at different distances from the sensor.
Avoid automatically choosing the smallest aperture your lens provides.
Extremely narrow apertures can require higher ISO or slower shutter speeds and may introduce diffraction. More importantly, you do not necessarily need every wingtip perfectly sharp for the photograph to succeed.
Positioning can often accomplish more than closing the aperture.
Whenever possible, move until the camera sensor is relatively parallel to the dragonfly’s body and wings. Putting important details on a similar plane of focus lets you preserve more apparent sharpness without resorting to an extremely small aperture.

Once a dragonfly leaves its perch, your priorities change immediately.
Switch to approximately:
Shutter speed: 1/2000 to 1/3200 second
Aperture: f/5.6 to f/8
ISO: Auto ISO
Autofocus: Continuous AF
Drive mode: High-speed burst
Dragonflies accelerate, stop, hover, and change direction extraordinarily quickly. A shutter speed that looks excessive when the insect is still can suddenly become necessary.
Start around 1/2500 second in good light.
Move toward 1/3200 second when the dragonfly is flying rapidly across the frame or very close to the camera. Larger dragonflies gliding farther away may occasionally be captured successfully around 1/1600 or 1/2000 second.
Your exact result will depend on speed, distance, angle, focal length, and whether you want completely frozen wings.
Use Manual Exposure With Auto ISO for Flight
One of the most practical ways to photograph flying dragonflies is Manual mode combined with Auto ISO.
Set the two variables that matter most:
- Shutter speed around 1/2500 second
- Aperture around f/5.6 or f/8
Then allow Auto ISO to compensate as the dragonfly moves between brighter and darker backgrounds.
This prevents the camera from unexpectedly choosing a shutter speed that is too slow.
A dragonfly may cross bright open water, dark vegetation, pale sky, and reflective leaves during the same short flight. Auto ISO lets the camera respond to those changes while you retain control over motion and depth of field.
Watch your ISO range, however. In very low light, there eventually comes a point where even Auto ISO cannot compensate without significant noise or underexposure.
Best Autofocus Settings for Dragonfly Photography
For perched dragonflies, Single Point AF or a Small Zone gives you precision.
Place the active area over the head, preferably near the eyes. Wing patterns can attract autofocus, especially when they contrast strongly against a smooth background.
Continuous autofocus is still useful because even a resting dragonfly may make slight positional changes.
For flight, expand the active focus area.
Try:
- Zone AF
- Wide-area tracking
- Subject tracking
- Animal or insect detection, when supported
- Continuous AF / AF-C
Wide tracking gives the camera more opportunities to acquire a tiny subject that can be difficult to keep beneath a single autofocus point.
Do not expect subject detection to do everything for you. Tracking systems work considerably better when you keep the dragonfly reasonably close to the active AF area.
How to Photograph a Hovering Dragonfly
Hovering is one of the best moments to watch for.
Some dragonflies repeatedly patrol the same territory, pause briefly in midair, move away, and then return to roughly the same position.
Instead of chasing them through the viewfinder, observe the flight pattern.
Once you recognize a recurring hovering location, pre-frame that area and wait.

- Zone or Wide Tracking

Leave slightly more room around the dragonfly than you ultimately want. Tight framing makes an unpredictable subject much easier to lose.

Continuous shooting is particularly valuable for flight and takeoff sequences.
High-speed burst gives you several frames while the dragonfly changes wing position, body angle, and distance from the camera. One photograph may have a distracting wing position while the next looks beautifully balanced.
Avoid holding the shutter continuously for long periods.
Short controlled bursts make reviewing photographs easier and reduce unnecessary files.
Anticipate the moment, begin tracking, fire a short burst, then reset.
That method is especially effective when a perched dragonfly appears ready to take off.
Choose the Right Lens and Working Distance
You do not have to photograph a dragonfly at true 1:1 macro magnification.
In fact, a little more working distance can make the process considerably easier.
A 90mm to 105mm macro lens provides strong magnification while allowing more comfortable separation from the insect. Longer macro lenses can provide additional working distance for easily disturbed subjects.
Telephoto lenses also work surprisingly well for larger dragonflies.
A 100-400mm or similar telephoto zoom lets you photograph from farther away, creating a clean background and avoiding the need to approach too closely.

One of the biggest differences between an ordinary insect record shot and a compelling dragonfly photograph is often the background.
Before moving toward the dragonfly, look behind it.
A small shift left or right may replace a chaotic arrangement of leaves and stems with soft green, blue water, distant flowers, or shadow.
Greater separation between the dragonfly and background also helps create smoother blur.
Sometimes stepping backward slightly and using a longer focal length produces a stronger photograph than pushing the lens as close as physically possible.
Adjust Exposure for Bright Wings and Reflective Bodies
Dragonfly wings can reflect strong sunlight, while some species have glossy or brilliantly colored bodies.
Watch your highlights carefully.
Bright midday light can produce intense reflections that lose delicate wing texture. Slight negative exposure compensation, such as -1/3 EV, may help when highlights are approaching clipping.
