Photography becomes much easier once you stop thinking of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO as three unrelated sets of numbers.
One measurement connects them all: the stop.

What Does +1 or -1 Mean on the Camera Meter?
The exposure scale in a viewfinder or on the rear screen often displays values around zero.
Zero represents the camera meter’s suggested exposure for the scene.
A reading around +1 means the exposure is approximately one stop brighter than that metered reference.
A reading around -1 means it is approximately one stop darker.
That does not mean zero is always artistically correct.

Stops become valuable when something about the photograph needs to change.
Suppose you are photographing a person at f/5.6 and want a softer background. Opening to f/4 adds one stop. To maintain similar exposure, increase your shutter speed by one stop or lower ISO by one stop.
For fast action, you may need to move from 1/500 to 1/1000 second. That costs one stop, so compensate elsewhere if necessary.
During low-light photography, opening the lens one stop can sometimes let you keep a safer handheld shutter speed instead of accepting motion blur.
Landscape photographers can use the same thinking when slowing the shutter for moving water.

Try This One-Stop Photography Exercise
A short experiment can make the concept much easier to remember.
Choose a stationary subject near consistent light and place your camera on a steady surface or tripod.
Start with:
ISO 100
f/5.6
1/125 second
Take one photograph.
Next, change only the shutter speed to 1/60 second. The second frame should be roughly one stop brighter because the exposure time has approximately doubled.
Return to 1/125 second.
Now change ISO from 100 to 200 and photograph the scene again.
Finally, return to ISO 100 and change the aperture from f/5.6 to f/4.
Compare all four frames.
After seeing what one stop looks like, practice compensating. Open the aperture by one stop while increasing shutter speed by one stop. Overall brightness should stay close while depth of field or motion rendering changes.

Common Mistakes When Learning Stops of Light
