If you have ever looked at a camera lens and wondered why it says f/1.8, f/2.8, f/4, or another seemingly random number, you are looking at one of the most important controls in photography: aperture.
Those numbers tell much more than how much light a lens can collect.
Changing from f/1.8 to f/2.8 or f/4 can affect background blur, depth of field, shutter speed, focusing tolerance, low-light performance, and even the way you compose a photograph.
The confusing part is that the numbering seems backward. f/1.8 is a larger opening than f/4. Once you understand why, aperture becomes much easier to use intentionally instead of simply memorizing settings.
Here is what f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4 actually mean, plus when each one is the right choice.

The numbers f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4 are f-numbers, sometimes called f-stops. They describe the relationship between the lens’s focal length and the effective size of its aperture opening.
Aperture is the adjustable opening inside a lens that controls how much light reaches the camera sensor or film.
A lower f-number represents a wider aperture.
A higher f-number represents a narrower aperture.
That means:
- f/1.8 is very wide
- f/2.8 is moderately wide
- f/4 is smaller than both
Opening the aperture usually allows more light into the camera while reducing depth of field. Closing it reduces light while increasing the range that appears acceptably sharp.

Why Is f/1.8 Bigger Than f/4?
Aperture numbers feel backward because they are ratios.
Think of the number as part of a fraction. Just as 1/2 is larger than 1/4, an aperture of f/2 represents a larger opening than f/4.
You don’t need to do the math every time you take a picture. Simply remember:
Smaller f-number = larger aperture opening
Larger f-number = smaller aperture opening
This is why photographers often describe f/1.8 as a wide aperture and f/11 as a small aperture.
Once that relationship becomes familiar, the rest of aperture becomes much easier to understand.
What Happens at f/1.8?
An aperture of f/1.8 is common on fast prime lenses, especially 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm lenses.
Because the opening is wide, plenty of light can reach the camera. That makes f/1.8 especially useful in low light.
You may choose f/1.8 for:
- Indoor photography without flash
- Evening street photography
- Portraits with a soft background
- Food and still life photography
- Details where you want strong subject separation
- Situations where you need a faster shutter speed
The shallow depth of field can also create beautiful background blur.
However, f/1.8 isn’t automatically the best aperture just because it produces blur.
Photograph a person’s face at close range and one eye might appear sharp while the other falls slightly outside the depth of field. Photograph several people standing at different distances and some faces may become noticeably soft.
Practical tip: Use f/1.8 when the shallow depth of field adds something to the photograph, not simply because your lens allows it.
What Happens at f/2.8?
f/2.8 offers a useful balance between light and depth of field.
Many photographers consider it extremely versatile because it can still produce strong subject separation while offering slightly more focusing tolerance than f/1.8.
It is especially useful for:
- Portraits
- Events
- Weddings
- Indoor sports
- Street photography
- Food
- Flowers
- Wildlife
- Low-light photography
Constant f/2.8 zoom lenses are popular because they combine a relatively wide aperture with the convenience of multiple focal lengths.
Moving from f/1.8 to f/2.8 increases depth of field, but that does not mean the background suddenly becomes sharp. Subject distance, focal length and background distance all contribute to how blurred the background appears.
For example, an 85mm lens at f/2.8 with the subject close and the background far away can still produce considerable background blur.
What Happens at f/4?
At f/4, the aperture is narrower again.
You lose some light compared with f/2.8 and considerably more compared with f/1.8, but you gain additional depth of field.
That can make f/4 a particularly practical choice for:
- Small groups
- Environmental portraits
- Travel photography
- Street scenes
- Flowers with several important details
- Everyday documentary photography
- Subjects where f/1.8 creates too little depth
Don’t dismiss an f/4 lens as unable to create background blur. With the right focal length, subject distance and background placement, f/4 can still give excellent separation.

These are starting points, not rigid rules.
A photograph at f/4 can have more background blur than another photograph taken at f/1.8 if the focal length, camera position, and subject-to-background distance differ.
That distinction matters because aperture does not work alone.
How Much More Light Does f/1.8 Let In?
You can also measure the difference between aperture settings in stops of light.
Moving from f/2.8 to f/4 reduces the incoming light by one full stop. In practical terms, f/2.8 lets in about twice as much light as f/4.
The difference between f/1.8 and f/2.8 is a little more than one stop. Roughly, f/1.8 gathers about 2.4 times as much light as f/2.8.
Compared directly with f/4, f/1.8 gathers roughly five times as much light.
Actual light transmission can vary slightly between lenses, but the difference explains why a wide-aperture lens can be so valuable indoors or after sunset.
More incoming light may allow you to choose a faster shutter speed or lower ISO.
The Same Aperture Does Not Always Create the Same Look
One of the biggest aperture misconceptions is believing that f/2.8 always creates a particular amount of blur.
It does not.
Consider these factors:
Focal length: Longer lenses can produce stronger background separation.
Subject distance: Moving closer to your subject generally reduces depth of field.
Background distance: Moving the subject farther away from the background often makes the background appear softer.
Camera format: Sensor size and the focal length required for equivalent framing can influence the final depth-of-field appearance.
This is why memorizing “f/1.8 for portraits” or “f/8 for landscapes” can become limiting.
Instead, decide how much of your photograph needs to appear sharp, then choose an aperture that supports that intention.
Is f/1.8 Better Than f/2.8 or f/4?
No aperture is automatically better.
Each one solves a different problem.
Choose f/1.8 when light is limited or you want a deliberately shallow depth of field.
Select f/2.8 when you want a strong combination of light gathering, subject separation and slightly more usable depth.
Try f/4 when you need more of the subject in focus or when an extremely blurred background is not necessary.
Sometimes f/4 produces the stronger photograph because it gives an important second person, flower petal or environmental detail enough sharpness to contribute to the image.
Technical capability should serve the photograph, not determine it.
Try This Simple Aperture Test
The fastest way to understand these numbers is to photograph the same scene at all three settings.
Place a small object, flower, cup or person several feet in front of a detailed background.
Keep your camera position and focal length unchanged.
Take one photograph at:
- f/1.8
- f/2.8
- f/4
Adjust shutter speed or ISO as necessary so the overall exposure remains similar.

What Do f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4 Mean on a Camera Lens When Shopping?
You will often see the maximum aperture included directly in a lens name.
For example, a 50mm f/1.8 lens can open to f/1.8. A 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom can maintain f/2.8 throughout its stated zoom range when it is a constant-aperture model.
Maximum aperture can affect lens size, weight, price and low-light capability.
If you are comparing options for your camera system, looking at current 50mm f/1.8 prime lenses, 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom lenses and f/4 zoom lenses can make the practical differences in size, specifications and price easier to understand.
Always confirm the camera mount and compatibility before ordering a lens.
Some zoom lenses also show two aperture numbers, such as f/3.5-5.6. That usually means the widest available aperture changes as you zoom from the shorter focal length toward the longer one.

What About f/8, f/11, f/16 and f/22?
As the f-number increases, the aperture gets smaller.
Settings such as f/8 and f/11 can provide greater depth of field, making them useful when more of the scene needs to remain sharp.
Moving all the way to f/16 or f/22 requires another consideration.
Extremely small apertures can introduce diffraction, which may reduce very fine detail even while depth of field increases.
