Black and white film removes color from the finished photograph, but color still matters enormously before you press the shutter.
A red brick building, blue sky, green tree, yellow coat, and pale skin may look completely different to your eyes because you naturally separate them by color. Black-and-white film must translate all those colors into shades of gray.
Sometimes two completely different colors become almost identical shades of gray.
That is where colored filters become powerful.
Placing a yellow, orange, red, green, or blue filter over the lens changes which wavelengths of light reach the film. Instead of simply increasing overall contrast, the filter lets you control which colors lighten and which darken in the final monochrome image.
Used deliberately, a simple filter can transform a weak sky, separate foliage from a background, change how freckles and skin imperfections appear, or turn an ordinary landscape into a much more dramatic photograph.
The goal is to learn how to predict what each filter will do before you expose the frame.

The Most Important Rule of Colored Filters
There is one principle worth remembering:
A colored filter generally lightens colors similar to itself and darkens colors that are farther away from it on the color spectrum.
Put a red filter over the lens, for example, and red objects tend to reproduce lighter while blue skies become considerably darker.
Choose a green filter instead, and green foliage can appear lighter while reds may become darker.
This is why filters can create separation between subjects that would otherwise reproduce as nearly the same gray.
Imagine a red flower surrounded by green leaves.
Without a filter, both could photograph as similar middle-gray tones.
A green filter can lighten the foliage while darkening the red flower. A red filter can reverse much of that relationship.
Neither version is automatically correct.
The important question is: Which element do you want to stand out?
That mindset makes choosing a filter much easier.
Yellow Filters: The Gentle Starting Point
A yellow filter is often the easiest colored filter to start with on black-and-white film.
Its effect is usually noticeable without looking extreme.
Blue skies usually darken slightly, helping white clouds separate more clearly. Skin can appear a little smoother, while landscapes often gain additional tonal distinction.
Yellow filters work particularly well for:
- Everyday black and white photography
- Landscapes
- Architecture
- Street scenes
- Portraits
- Clouds and open skies
Photographers sometimes describe yellow filters as producing a more natural-looking monochrome interpretation because the result often feels closer to how we expect a blue sky and white clouds to separate.
If you are unsure which filter to try first, yellow is a sensible choice.
Practical tip: Photograph the same scene once without the filter and once with yellow. Comparing the negatives or scans will teach you much more than simply reading about the effect.
Orange Filters: Stronger Contrast Without Going Extreme
An orange filter sits between yellow and red in both color and effect.
Blue skies become noticeably darker, while warm-colored objects tend to appear lighter. Clouds can look more dramatic as the surrounding sky deepens.
Orange filters are particularly useful when yellow feels too subtle, but red seems excessive.
Try one for:
- Dramatic landscapes
- Architecture against blue skies
- Coastal scenes
- Desert landscapes
- Street photography in strong sunlight
- Certain portraits
Textures in stone, brick, weathered buildings, and clouds can become more visually prominent because of the increased tonal separation.
An orange filter can also alter the appearance of skin. Blemishes and some reddish marks may appear lighter and become less noticeable, depending on the person’s complexion and lighting.
When photographing people, test the effect rather than assuming stronger filtration will always produce a more flattering portrait.

Red Filters: Use Them When You Want Drama
A red filter can create one of the strongest transformations in traditional black-and-white photography.
Deep blue skies can become extremely dark. White clouds may suddenly appear brilliant against them. Red and orange subjects become lighter, while cyan and blue areas darken dramatically.
The result can feel bold, graphic, and almost surreal.
Red filters work especially well for:
- Dramatic skies
- Mountain landscapes
- Desert photography
- Architecture
- Strong cloud formations
- Minimalist compositions
- High-contrast outdoor scenes
Picture a white lighthouse against a deep blue summer sky.
Without filtration, the sky may appear as a relatively ordinary gray.
Add a strong red filter, and that same sky can become dramatically darker while the lighthouse remains bright.
The entire photograph changes, even though the composition hasn’t moved.
Red filters are powerful, so use them because the photograph needs the effect, not simply because the filter is available.
Green Filters: Make Foliage Behave Differently
Green filters are particularly interesting because landscape photographers often spend so much time thinking about skies that they forget about vegetation.
Green foliage can sometimes reproduce darker than expected on black-and-white film.
A green filter allows more green light to pass through, which can make leaves, grass, and other vegetation appear lighter.
That extra separation can be useful in:
- Forest photography
- Garden scenes
- Botanical photographs
- Rural landscapes
- Environmental portraits
- Spring and summer photography
A green filter can also change skin rendering.
Because red tones are affected differently, freckles, blemishes, and reddish areas may become more pronounced rather than reduced. That can be useful for character-driven portraits but less desirable when you want a smooth rendering.
Think of green as a specialized tool, not an automatic landscape filter.

What Does a Blue Filter Do?
Blue filters are less commonly discussed, but understanding them completes the picture.
A blue filter lightens blue subjects while tending to darken warmer colors such as reds and oranges.
That means it usually does the opposite of what many photographers want when photographing a dramatic sky.
Instead of darkening blue, it can make the sky appear lighter.
Blue filtration can be useful creatively when you want:
- Pale, airy skies
- Increased separation of blue objects
- Darker warm-colored subjects
- A deliberately unusual tonal interpretation
- More pronounced skin texture in certain portraits
Because the effect is less universally flattering or dramatic than yellow, orange, or red, blue filters are generally better suited to experimentation than everyday black-and-white shooting.

Yellow vs Orange vs Red: Which Should You Use?
Think of these three filters as increasing levels of blue-sky suppression.

Do not assume stronger means better.
A yellow-filtered photograph can contain more subtle tonal transitions than an aggressively filtered red version.
The correct choice depends on the scene.
When soft clouds and gentle midtones define the photograph, yellow may be enough. Strong architectural shapes against a clear blue sky might benefit from orange. Towering white clouds above mountains could justify red.
Choose the filter based on the relationship you want between colors after they become gray.
Look at Colors Before Looking at Contrast
One of the best ways to use filters effectively is to stop asking:
“Would this look good in black and white?”
Ask instead:
“Which colors in this scene will become similar shades of gray?”
Suppose a person in a red coat is standing against a green wall.
Color gives you instant separation.
Without color, the coat and wall might reproduce at similar brightness levels.
Now the filter choice matters.
A red filter could lighten the coat and darken the green wall. A green filter could create the opposite relationship.
You are no longer using contrast as something that happens accidentally.
You are designing the tonal separation before exposure.

Colored Filters Can Transform Street Photography
Street photography provides countless opportunities for filter experimentation because cities contain strong color relationships.
Consider:
- Red brick against blue sky
- Green awnings beside warm-colored buildings
- Yellow taxis against darker streets
- Painted signs
- Clothing
- Storefronts
- Murals
- Traffic lights
- Strong architectural shadows
A yellow or orange filter can be especially practical because it adds tonal separation without producing the extreme effect of deep red filtration.
Street photography also moves quickly, so avoid constantly changing filters while important moments disappear.

Remember That Filters Reduce Light
Colored filters don’t just change tones.
They also absorb light.
That means less light reaches the film, so you may need to compensate for exposure.
The exact amount varies by the filter’s color, strength, manufacturer, film, and how you meter.
Some through-the-lens camera meters can account for much of the reduced light because they measure through the filter. Handheld meters that measure separately from the camera do not automatically know a filter has been attached.
Strong filters may also influence the accuracy of some older camera meters.
Always check the filter manufacturer’s recommended filter factor and test your specific camera.

Try a One-Roll Colored Filter Test
The fastest way to understand colored filters is to create your own controlled comparison.
Choose a roll of black and white film you already know.
Find several scenes containing obvious colors, such as blue sky, green plants, red brick, colorful clothing, or painted buildings.
For each scene:
- Take one photograph without a filter.
- Repeat it with yellow.
- Try orange if available.
- Photograph another version with red or green.
- Record the frame numbers and filters used.
Keep the composition and lighting as consistent as possible.
When the film returns, compare the tonal relationships instead of simply deciding which photograph you like best.
Did the blue sky darken as expected?
What happened to foliage?
Did brick become lighter?
How did skin tones change?
Were shadows affected visually because other tones moved around them?
Those comparisons will become your personal filter reference.

Do Not Stack Filters Without a Reason
It can be tempting to combine several filters because each produces an interesting effect on its own.
More is not necessarily better.
Stacking filters may reduce light substantially, increase the risk of vignetting with wide-angle lenses, add flare, and complicate exposure.
Start with one colored filter.
Learn its effect thoroughly.
Once you understand what it contributes, you can decide whether to combine it with another filter for a specific purpose.
Deliberate experimentation is valuable.
Random filter stacking usually teaches much less.
Keep the Filter Clean
A filter adds another optical surface in front of the lens.
Fingerprints, dust, water spots, and smears can reduce contrast or create flare, particularly when strong light enters from the side or front.
Inspect the filter before attaching it.
Use an appropriate blower or lens-cleaning cloth when needed, and store filters in cases rather than loose inside the camera bag.
Older filters also deserve inspection for scratches, haze, damaged coatings, or separation.
A colored filter should alter tones intentionally, not accidentally degrade image quality.
Judge the Filter From the Negative and Scan
Scanning adds another interpretation stage to film photography.
Automatic scanner corrections can change brightness and contrast enough to disguise part of the filter’s original effect.
When testing filters, ask the lab for relatively neutral scans when possible.
Study the negatives as well.
Then compare the filtered and unfiltered frames side by side before making large editing adjustments.

Choosing the strongest filter automatically: Dramatic contrast is not appropriate for every photograph.
Ignoring the actual colors in the scene: Filter choice should respond to color relationships, even though the finished image is black and white.
Forgetting exposure compensation: Filters absorb light, and your metering method determines how to handle that loss.
Assuming every camera meter behaves the same way: Older meters may respond differently through strongly colored filters.
Using red for every landscape: Some scenes look better with the gentler tonal separation of yellow or orange.
Ignoring skin tone changes: Filters can alter how freckles, blemishes, lips, and complexion reproduce.
Changing filters constantly: Learning one filter deeply is more useful than trying five filters randomly.
Judging only from heavily adjusted scans: Editing can hide the original tonal differences the filter created.
Learn to See the Photograph Before Choosing the Filter
Learning to use colored filters with black-and-white film is ultimately a visualization exercise.
The filter does not make a photograph interesting by itself.
It gives you control over how existing colors become monochrome tones.
Study the blue sky.
Notice the red brick.
Look at the green leaves.
Pay attention to clothing, skin, flowers, painted surfaces, signs, and architecture.
Then imagine those colors without their color identities.
Which ones might merge?
Which subject needs to become lighter?
What should become darker?
Would subtle yellow filtration be enough, or does the photograph need the stronger separation of orange or red?
Once you start thinking this way, black-and-white film becomes much less about removing color.
Instead, color becomes an invisible tool that you can manipulate before the shutter opens.
That is what makes colored filters so fascinating.
You are not simply photographing the world in shades of gray.
You are deciding which shades of gray the colors will become.
