Film photography should expose each frame only when the shutter opens. A light leak happens when unwanted light reaches the film at another time.
That extra exposure may appear as red, orange, yellow, pale, or white streaks, hazy bands, glowing edges, irregular patches or washed-out sections of a photograph. Sometimes the effect looks wonderfully nostalgic. Other times it lands directly across a face, removes important detail or damages several frames from a roll you cannot recreate.
Fortunately, light leaks usually leave clues.
Instead of looking at one scan and assuming the camera is broken, study the color, shape, location, and repetition of the unwanted light. Check whether it reaches beyond the image area, appears on every frame or only occasionally, and remains in roughly the same position from one photograph to another.
Those details can help you trace the problem back to deteriorated light seals, a loose camera back, film handling, the cassette, the lens side of the camera, or even something that happened during processing.
Learning how to read those clues turns a disappointing roll into a surprisingly useful camera diagnosis.

What Is a Light Leak in Film Photography?
A film camera is designed to remain light-tight everywhere except the controlled path through the lens.
When you press the shutter, it opens for a specific amount of time and lets light through the lens onto the film. Once the exposure ends, the shutter closes, and the film should be protected from light again.
A light leak bypasses that normal process.
Unwanted light finds another path into the camera or reaches the film during loading, unloading, storage or processing. Because photographic film remains sensitive to light until it is developed, even a tiny opening can leave visible marks.
The result depends on several variables, including:
- Where the unwanted light entered
- How bright that light was
- How long the film was exposed
- Whether the film was stationary or moving
- Which side of the film received the light
- How tightly the film was wound
- The film stock being used
This explains why two cameras with deteriorating seals can produce completely different-looking leaks.
What Do Film Light Leaks Look Like?
No single appearance confirms a light leak.
Common signs include:
- Red or orange streaks
- Yellow glowing areas
- White or pale bands
- Bright edges
- Irregular patches of fog
- Repeated marks in roughly the same location
- Light extending across the border between frames
- One side of several photographs appearing washed out
- Strong flare-like areas that do not correspond with the scene
Before diagnosing anything from the scan, examine the physical negatives whenever possible.
Scanners, color corrections, and automated lab adjustments can alter how a leak appears in the final digital image. The negative gives you additional information that a scan may hide.

Red and Orange Light Leaks Often Point Toward the Back of the Camera
One of the most useful clues is color.
On color negative film, red or orange light leaks often come from light reaching the film from behind. Light entering through the camera back can pass through the film base before reaching the light-sensitive layers, creating those characteristic warm colors.
Think of a broad orange streak appearing along the same edge of several photographs.
That pattern should make you inspect the camera back, hinge, and surrounding light seals before blaming exposure settings or the lens.
Treat color as evidence, not an absolute rule.
Different films, camera designs, scan settings, and processing methods can change how a leak appears. Use color together with location and repetition rather than relying on color alone.
White or Pale Light Leaks May Be Coming From the Front
Pale, white, or sometimes cooler-looking leaks can suggest that unwanted light is reaching the emulsion from the front or lens side of the camera.
Possible sources include:
- A loose lens
- Damaged bellows
- Cracks around the lens mount
- Shutter problems
- Gaps in the camera body
- Improperly fitted interchangeable backs
These problems are less common than deteriorated rear light seals, but they deserve attention when replacing the back seals does not solve the problem.
An important clue is whether the unwanted exposure remains mostly inside the image area.
Light entering through the normal optical path may behave differently from light entering behind the film and spreading into the film edges.
Again, use several clues together before concluding.
Worn Light Seals Are One of the Most Common Causes
Older film cameras frequently use foam around the camera back to prevent stray light from entering.
Unfortunately, foam deteriorates.
After decades, a seal that was once springy and opaque can become:
- Brittle
- Flat
- Crumbly
- Sticky
- Powdery
- Partially missing
Once gaps form, sunlight can reach the film chamber.
The hinge area is especially important because it moves every time the camera opens and closes. Seals around the latch, viewing window, and back channels can also deteriorate.
Inspect them with the camera empty.
If the foam resembles black dust, sticky tar, or flattened material that no longer fills its channel, you may need to replace it.
Never place foam or adhesive near the shutter curtain, film gate, or other delicate moving components.

A Camera Back That Does Not Close Properly Can Leak Light
Perfect seals cannot compensate for a back that isn’t seated correctly.
Check whether the camera back closes evenly and latches securely.
Problems can develop after a camera has been dropped, repaired incorrectly, or stored under pressure. A worn latch can also allow slight movement.
Even a tiny gap may only become problematic under certain lighting conditions.
That explains a confusing situation: some photographs look perfect while others show strong leaks.
Perhaps the camera was shaded during most of the roll. Later, direct afternoon sun struck the faulty side of the body for several minutes.
Suddenly, multiple frames show damage.
Intermittent leaks do not necessarily mean the problem disappeared. They may require the right angle and light intensity to become visible.
Opening the Camera Before Rewinding Can Fog the Film
Accidentally opening a loaded camera exposes film directly to ambient light.
The amount of damage depends on how long the back stayed open, the brightness of the surroundings, and where each section of film was located at that moment.
Film still protected inside the cassette may survive.
Frames wrapped tightly around the take-up spool sometimes receive partial protection from the layers above them. Sections stretched across the film gate receive much less protection.
Close the camera immediately if this happens.
Do not assume the entire roll is ruined and throw it away. Rewind the film properly when appropriate and have it developed.

Strong Light During Loading and Unloading Can Affect Film
The 35mm cassette protects most unused film, but the leader is exposed while you load the camera.
Normally, losing a small amount of film at the beginning of the roll is expected. Problems become more likely when you pull too much film from the cartridge in bright sunlight.
Whenever possible, load film in subdued light.
If you must load outside, turn your body so it shades the camera. Avoid leaving an open camera sitting in direct sun while figuring out how the take-up spool works.
Similar care matters when unloading some film formats.
The goal is not to work in complete darkness. Normal 35mm cartridges are designed for everyday handling. Avoid unnecessarily intense light when exposed sections of film are outside their light-tight protection.
Damaged Film Cassettes Can Also Cause Light Leaks
Sometimes the camera is innocent.
A damaged or compromised cassette can allow unwanted light to reach the film.
Inspect the cartridge if it appears dented, damaged, or unusually loose. Bulk-loaded film also introduces additional variables because reusable cassettes and their light-trapping mechanisms must remain reliable.
If a single roll shows an unusual problem but the rolls before and after it look normal, consider the film cartridge and handling before arranging an expensive camera repair.
Patterns across multiple rolls are much more informative.
Medium Format Film Can Develop Light Leaks Differently
Photographers using 120 film have a few extra considerations.
Unlike 35mm film inside a metal cassette, 120 film is wound with backing paper. Keeping that roll tightly wound matters.
A loosely wound roll, sometimes called a fat roll, can allow light to reach the edges of the film.
Problems may occur when:
- The film is not wound tightly enough
- Backing paper loosens
- The finished roll is handled carelessly
- The roll is left unprotected in strong light
- Loading or unloading takes too long in bright conditions
Secure finished 120 rolls promptly and keep them protected until processing.
The troubleshooting principle remains the same: look at where the damage begins, how far it travels, and whether the pattern repeats.
Not Every Strange Bright Mark Is a Camera Light Leak
Film can produce unexpected results in many ways.
Lens flare, chemical problems, scanner artifacts, airport X-ray fogging, expired film, static marks, and accidental exposure can sometimes look like light leaks.
Lens flare is especially easy to confuse with them.
A flare forms when strong light enters through the lens and reflects within the optical system during the exposure. Its appearance often relates to a bright light source within or immediately outside the composition.
A camera light leak reaches the film when it shouldn’t.
Those are different problems.
Expired film can also develop increased base fog, color shifts, or reduced contrast. Still, age does not automatically explain a distinct streak appearing in the same position across several rolls.
Diagnose the pattern before blaming the film stock.
The Frame Pattern Can Tell You Where to Look
One damaged photograph provides little evidence.
Repeated damage does.
If a similar streak appears on frame 4, frame 11, frame 19, and frame 30, compare its exact position.
Does it always begin from the same edge?
Does the mark cross the normal frame boundary?
Does it appear more strongly in photographs made outdoors?
Were the affected photographs taken on sunny days?
Does the problem recur with different film stocks processed by different labs?
Repeated placement across several rolls strongly shifts suspicion toward the camera.
Problems limited to the first few or final frames may point more toward loading, unloading or handling.
Irregular damage appearing only once deserves more investigation before you replace parts.
How to Test a Film Camera for Light Leaks
Don’t use an important vacation, portrait session, or event as your test roll.
After inspecting the seals and camera back, load an inexpensive roll of film you trust.
Photograph in easy daylight and keep simple notes on the frame numbers.
Include scenes in bright sunlight and situations where light strikes different sides of the camera body. Avoid changing numerous variables at once.
When the roll returns, inspect both the scans and negatives.

Can You Fix Light Leaks in Film Photos?
Repairing the camera prevents future leaks, but fixing an already exposed negative is different.
You can sometimes reduce mild leaks in editing.
You may be able to:
- Crop the affected edge
- Reduce highlights
- Adjust local color
- Rebuild contrast
- Darken a bright patch selectively
- Use healing or cloning tools for small areas
Severely fogged film contains lost image information that editing cannot magically restore.
Before deleting the photograph, consider whether the leak actually adds something.
Film imperfections can occasionally create atmosphere, movement, and unexpected color that’s difficult to reproduce intentionally. An imperfect photograph can still make a beautiful print if the essential subject remains strong.

How to Prevent Light Leaks on Future Rolls
A few habits can prevent many light-leak problems.
Inspect older cameras before trusting them with important photographs.
Check foam seals for deterioration.
Make sure the camera back closes securely.
Load and unload film away from intense direct sunlight whenever practical.
Never open the camera until the film has been properly rewound or otherwise secured according to the camera design.
Keep finished medium-format rolls tightly wrapped.
Avoid forcing damaged cassettes into a camera.
Most importantly, watch for suspicious patterns.
One imperfect frame may be an accident. The same bright streak appearing in the same location across several rolls is your camera asking for attention.
What Causes Light Leaks in Film Photography? Follow the Evidence
Light leaks are not one mysterious film photography problem with one universal solution.
A deteriorated foam seal can cause them. So can a loose camera back, damaged hinge, compromised cassette, cracked bellows, lens-mount problem, accidental opening, poor film handling, or unwanted exposure during processing.
The photograph itself provides clues.
Study the color.
Look at the edges.
Compare several frames.
Inspect the negative.
Notice whether the pattern extends outside the photographed image.
Think about when the camera was in strong light.
Then compare another roll.
Film photography becomes far less frustrating when you stop treating unusual results as random failures and start treating the negative as evidence.
That mindset is useful well beyond light leaks.
Every developed roll tells you something about the camera, film, exposure, processing, and the way you worked. Keep your negatives, compare your results, and investigate repeating patterns before putting another important roll through a questionable camera.
A glowing orange streak may initially look like a ruined photograph.
Sometimes, however, it is also the exact clue you need to find a thirty-year-old foam seal quietly asking to be replaced.
