Few sights in night photography are as striking as watching a familiar bright Moon gradually turn copper, rust, orange, or deep red during a lunar eclipse.
Photographing that transformation presents a different challenge from ordinary Moon photography.
The red Moon is dramatically dimmer than the uneclipsed Moon. Its color can also be surprisingly delicate. Expose too brightly, and the rich copper tones can wash out. Underexpose too heavily, and the lunar surface may turn muddy, noisy, or almost black. Push the color too far in editing, and a naturally beautiful eclipse can start to look artificial.
The goal is not simply to make the Moon look red.
Instead, concentrate on preserving the actual color, surface texture, shadow detail, and atmosphere that make the eclipse extraordinary.
This guide explains how to photograph the red Moon during a lunar eclipse using a practical color-first approach, including exposure, white balance, RAW files, focusing, bracketing, lens choice, and editing.

Why Does the Moon Turn Red During a Lunar Eclipse?
Understanding the color makes it easier to photograph.
During a lunar eclipse, Earth moves between the Sun and Moon. As the Moon enters Earth’s darker shadow, direct sunlight is blocked.
Some sunlight still travels through Earth’s atmosphere before reaching the lunar surface.
Shorter blue and violet wavelengths scatter more readily in the atmosphere, while longer red and orange wavelengths continue through more effectively. Those warmer wavelengths illuminate the eclipsed portion of the Moon.
That is why the lunar surface may appear:
- Copper
- Brick red
- Burnt orange
- Rust
- Dark amber
- Reddish brown
Not every lunar eclipse produces the same color.
Atmospheric conditions can influence what you see, which means photographers should resist deciding beforehand exactly what shade the Moon is “supposed” to be.
Capture what the night actually gives you.
The Most Important Rule: Expose for the Red Moon, Not the Black Sky
A dark sky surrounding a relatively small Moon can confuse a camera’s metering system.
Automatic exposure may try to brighten the entire frame. When it does, the Moon can lose texture, and its subtle color can look pale or washed out.
Switching to Manual exposure gives you far more control.
When the red color becomes prominent, try a starting range such as:
Camera mode: Manual
File format: RAW
Aperture: f/5.6 to f/8
ISO: 400 to 1600
Shutter speed: approximately 1/15 to 1/125 second
White balance: Daylight or approximately 4000K to 5000K
Focus: Manual
Tripod: Recommended
These are starting points, not universal settings.
The Moon becomes progressively darker as the eclipse advances, so your exposure must change with it. Atmospheric haze, lens aperture, focal length, sensor performance, and eclipse depth also affect the final result.

Do Not Wait Until the Moon Turns Red to Establish Focus
Focusing becomes harder as the eclipse deepens.
Use the brighter Moon earlier in the evening to establish precise focus.
Switch to Live View or use your electronic viewfinder, magnify a detailed area of the lunar surface, then turn the focus ring slowly until crater edges appear as crisp as possible.
Once focused, switch the lens or camera to manual focus.
Check it occasionally during the night, particularly after moving the camera, changing focal length, or accidentally touching the focus ring.
Long telephoto lenses magnify tiny focusing errors, so precision matters.

Protect the Red Channel From Overexposure
Here is where photographing a red lunar eclipse becomes especially interesting.
A photograph can look reasonably exposed overall while still losing important color information.
The Moon’s red and orange tones contain information primarily toward the warmer part of the color spectrum. Aggressive exposure can flatten those tonal differences and leave the lunar disk looking strangely pale.
Watch your histogram and use highlight warnings rather than judging exposure only from the rear screen.
Camera displays can be deceptive at night because your eyes adapt to darkness.
If you are not yet comfortable interpreting a histogram, learning that tool before eclipse night is extremely worthwhile. It can help you distinguish between a photograph that merely looks dark and one that has actually lost important information.
Protecting color usually gives you more editing flexibility later than pushing exposure until the Moon looks very bright in-camera.
Shoot RAW if You Want the Best Red-Moon Color
RAW files are particularly valuable for lunar eclipse photography.
Unlike a finished JPEG, a RAW file retains much more of the original image data the camera captures.
That extra latitude gives you better control over:
- White balance
- Color temperature
- Highlights
- Shadows
- Noise reduction
- Contrast
- Saturation
- Local adjustments
- Sharpening
White balance flexibility is especially important.
If the camera records an eclipse photograph slightly too cool, a RAW file makes it much easier to restore the natural copper warmth without damaging the image.
JPEG can still produce attractive eclipse photographs, but RAW gives you greater freedom when the Moon’s color is one of the main reasons for making the photograph.
White Balance Can Make or Break the Red Moon
Automatic white balance can work reasonably well in many situations, but an eclipse is not a normal lighting environment.
Your camera may see the warm lunar surface and attempt to neutralize it.
That is exactly what you do not want.
Try Daylight white balance as a dependable starting point. Photographers who prefer Kelvin control can experiment between 4000K and 5000K and adjust based on the Moon’s appearance.
Do not become obsessed with finding one mathematically perfect Kelvin value in the field.
RAW shooters can refine white balance afterward.
More importantly, avoid forcing the photograph toward an exaggerated fiery red. A lunar eclipse may naturally appear copper, orange-red, brownish red, or surprisingly dark.
Accuracy creates a more convincing photograph than maximum saturation.
Bracket the Deepest Red Stages
The most dramatic part of the eclipse is not the time to take one exposure and assume you have it.
Bracket.
For example, make one photograph at your chosen exposure, another slightly darker, and another slightly brighter.
A simple sequence might be:
- Base exposure
- 1 stop darker
- 1 stop brighter
You can also use smaller increments such as 1/3 or 2/3 stop when you are already close to the ideal exposure.
Bracketing gives you insurance against rapidly changing brightness and helps reveal which exposure best preserves color and surface detail.
The darker frame may contain richer color.
Your brighter exposure could reveal more shadow detail.
Often, the best image is not the brightest one.
Keep Shutter Speed Faster Than You Think
Tripods prevent camera movement, but they cannot stop the Moon from moving across the sky.
This becomes increasingly important with longer focal lengths.
A very slow exposure may gather more light, but that extra light means little if lunar detail softens from motion.
When the Moon grows darker, try raising ISO before automatically stretching the shutter speed to several seconds.
Modern cameras can often handle ISO 800, 1600, or even higher remarkably well, particularly when the alternative is motion blur.
You can often reduce noise in editing.
Blurred crater detail is considerably harder to repair.

Do Not Photograph Only a Giant Red Moon
A tightly framed lunar portrait can be spectacular, but give yourself another version.
Zoom out.
The red Moon becomes far more evocative when viewers can see where it appeared.
Try positioning it near:
- A skyline
- A bridge
- Mountains
- Trees
- A lighthouse
- A church steeple
- Rooftops
- Water
- Clouds
- Silhouetted people
A smaller red Moon above a distinctive landscape may ultimately become your favorite photograph of the night.
Composition can also benefit from layers. A silhouette in the foreground, a landscape in the middle, and an eclipsed Moon beyond can add scale and depth.

How to Edit the Red Moon Without Making It Look Fake
Start with a light touch.
The natural red Moon does not need to become neon.
Begin by correcting exposure and white balance. Next, lower highlights if brighter areas need recovery, then carefully open shadows if the eclipsed portion is too dark.
Add contrast gradually.
Texture and clarity can reveal lunar features, but too much creates crunchy crater edges and ugly halos.
Saturation deserves particular restraint.
Instead of immediately increasing global saturation, try a modest Vibrance adjustment or selectively work with the red and orange channels.
Noise reduction can help with high-ISO files, although too much will smear fine lunar detail.
Sharpen last and evaluate the photograph at 100 percent.
A convincing eclipse edit should make viewers think, “What an incredible Moon,” rather than, “What an incredible amount of editing.”
Why Does My Red Moon Look Orange?
Nothing may be wrong.
Lunar eclipses can appear orange, copper, reddish brown, dark red, or somewhere between those shades.
Atmospheric conditions affect the color reaching the Moon, while your white balance, exposure, camera sensor, display, and editing decisions influence the photograph you see afterward.
Do not chase a particular shade simply because another photographer’s image looks redder.
Record the eclipse you experienced.
Why Does My Red Moon Look Gray?
Several possibilities can cause this.
Your exposure may be too dark, automatic white balance may be neutralizing the warm color, haze may be reducing contrast, or you may be photographing a stage when the reddish coloration is still relatively subtle.
Check the RAW file before deciding the color wasn’t recorded.
Try adjusting white balance first, followed by modest exposure and contrast changes.
Avoid adding heavy saturation right away, because it can amplify noise without restoring natural color.
Photograph the Color as It Changes
One of the best creative exercises is to photograph the Moon at regular intervals.
Do not think only in terms of eclipse phases.
Watch the color progression.
Your sequence might move from:
Bright neutral Moon → faint warm shadow → copper edge → rusty partial Moon → deep red maximum → fading copper → bright Moon again.
Keeping exposure and framing reasonably controlled lets you assemble those photographs into a progression later.

Turn Your Best Red-Moon Photograph Into a Print
A richly colored eclipse photograph can make a striking print, especially when the lunar surface contains visible texture rather than appearing as a featureless glowing disk.

The richest eclipse color often appears when the Moon is also at its darkest, which means you must balance brightness, noise, sharpness, and color simultaneously.
Start with RAW.
Establish accurate focus early.
Use Manual exposure.
Watch your shutter speed.
Bracket important moments.
Keep checking the histogram.
Allow white balance to preserve warmth instead of neutralizing it.
Most importantly, do not measure success by how intensely red you can make the Moon.
A beautifully photographed lunar eclipse contains subtlety. Craters remain visible. Shadow has texture. Copper and rust tones transition naturally across the lunar surface, while the surrounding darkness gives those colors room to command attention.
When Earth finally casts its shadow across the Moon, photograph more than the astronomical event.
Photograph the color of the light.
That is what makes the red Moon unforgettable.
