A lunar eclipse is not one photograph. It is a story that unfolds across the night.
The ordinary full Moon begins to change almost imperceptibly. Earth’s shadow slowly becomes visible, progresses across the lunar surface, reaches its deepest point, and then retreats. Photographers who concentrate only on maximum eclipse can capture an impressive Moon, but they miss what makes an eclipse visually extraordinary: the transformation.
Photographing every stage of the lunar eclipse gives you far more than a collection of individual Moon photographs. You can create a chronological sequence, a multi-frame composite, a time-lapse, a panoramic progression, or a set of images that shows exactly how Earth’s shadow traveled across the lunar surface.
For the deep partial lunar eclipse of August 27 to 28, 2026, this approach is particularly worthwhile. Nearly the entire lunar disk will enter Earth’s dark umbral shadow at maximum eclipse, producing a dramatic progression from brilliant full Moon to a deeply shadowed lunar surface.
The secret is not simply taking more pictures. You need to photograph the right moments consistently from beginning to end.

Think in Stages Instead of Individual Photographs
Before the eclipse begins, decide that you are creating a sequence.
That simple mindset shift affects how you frame, expose, focus, and time your photographs.
Instead of reacting whenever the Moon looks interesting, establish several visual checkpoints:
- Full Moon before obvious shadowing
- Early penumbral eclipse
- Beginning of the partial eclipse
- Approximately one-quarter shadowed
- Approximately half shadowed
- Deep partial eclipse
- Maximum eclipse
- Early exiting partial eclipse
- Approximately half illuminated again
- Final partial phase
- Returning penumbral Moon
- Normal-looking Moon after the eclipse
You do not have to limit yourself to those photographs. Take many frames between them.
These checkpoints ensure you have enough evenly spaced stages to create a convincing final sequence.
Photograph the Moon Before the Eclipse Becomes Obvious
One of the easiest photographs to forget is the ordinary Moon before the eclipse becomes visible.
Capture it.
This first photograph becomes your visual reference for everything that follows. It shows the Moon’s normal brightness, surface detail, shape, and color before Earth’s shadow changes the scene.
Keep the framing intentional. If you want to create a later sequence in which every Moon appears the same size, use the same focal length throughout the eclipse.
Allow enough space around the lunar disk that minor tracking adjustments will not force you to crop some stages dramatically differently from others.
This is also the ideal time to establish precise focus because the Moon is still bright and easy to magnify on the camera display.

Capture the Penumbral Stage Even When It Looks Subtle
The penumbral eclipse begins when the Moon enters the lighter outer portion of Earth’s shadow.
At first, you may wonder whether anything is happening.
That subtlety is exactly why this stage deserves photographs.
Take a frame near the beginning, followed by additional images as the dimming becomes easier to recognize. Comparing these photographs later can reveal changes that were difficult to see while standing outside.
Do not dramatically brighten each image to make the Moon look identical.
Part of the story is the changing light.
When creating a sequence, preserving believable differences between stages produces a much stronger result than making every lunar disk equally bright.
Photograph the Moment the Dark Shadow Appears
The beginning of the partial eclipse is one of the most important stages of the entire sequence.
Earth’s umbra, its darker central shadow, begins taking a visible bite from the Moon.
Take several photographs as soon as you recognize the edge.
Exposure becomes increasingly difficult because one portion of the Moon can remain brilliantly illuminated while the eclipsed area grows much darker.
Protect detail in the bright portion rather than trying to make the shadowed area look unnaturally bright.

Create a Consistent Shooting Interval
Consistency transforms a random collection of Moon photographs into a useful sequence.
One simple approach is to take a carefully checked photograph every 5 or 10 minutes during the most visually active portion of the eclipse.
Another method is to photograph whenever the shadow appears to have moved a meaningful distance across the lunar surface.
For a composite with perhaps 7 to 12 Moons, you don’t need hundreds of final images. However, shooting more frequently gives you freedom to choose stages that are visually well spaced afterward.
Set an alarm or timer if necessary.
The eclipse develops slowly enough that it’s easy to get distracted, look through previous images, change settings, talk with someone, and suddenly realize a significant portion of the shadow has moved.
Keep the Moon the Same Size
A polished eclipse progression usually looks best when the lunar disk remains approximately the same size from frame to frame.
Avoid changing focal length midway through the sequence unless you deliberately want different compositions.
A telephoto lens in the 200mm to 800mm range can capture substantial lunar detail. However, shorter telephoto lenses can work beautifully when the Moon will later form part of a wider sequence.
Test anything new beforehand rather than learning unfamiliar equipment in darkness.
Leave a little breathing room around the Moon. Earth’s rotation means you will periodically need to reposition the camera as the Moon travels across the sky.

Adjust Exposure as the Eclipse Deepens
This is where treating the eclipse as one unchanging night scene stops working.
The bright Moon before the eclipse and the Moon near maximum can require dramatically different exposures.
Begin with Manual exposure and RAW files whenever your camera allows. Set sharp focus while the Moon is bright, then switch to manual focus once you confirm accuracy.
As the lunar surface becomes darker, make exposure changes deliberately.
A useful progression is:
- Open the aperture when necessary.
- Raise ISO to preserve a sufficiently fast shutter speed.
- Slow the shutter carefully if you still need more light.
Avoid solving every exposure problem by making the shutter increasingly slow.
The Moon moves continuously, and a long telephoto lens magnifies apparent movement. A photograph can look perfectly stable on a tripod while fine lunar detail softens during the exposure.

Photograph the Half-Shadow Stage Carefully
When Earth’s umbra covers roughly half of the Moon, you encounter one of the most visually interesting parts of the event.
The contrast can be extreme.
One side retains brilliant direct sunlight while the opposite portion sinks deeply into shadow. This boundary can reveal an extraordinary sense of dimension because the eclipse no longer resembles a flat white disk against black space.
Take multiple exposures.
One can preserve the illuminated lunar surface, while another can reveal additional color or detail inside the darker region.
Exposure bracketing is especially useful here.
Rather than forcing one frame to record everything perfectly, capture several brightness levels and decide afterward which photograph best represents the stage.
Capture More Frames as Maximum Approaches
Increase your shooting frequency as the eclipse moves toward maximum.
Why?
Maximum eclipse isn’t just one exact instant photographically.
The stages immediately before and after maximum can contain some of the richest color, most interesting shadow boundaries, and strongest contrasts of the entire night.
During the August 27 to 28, 2026 deep partial eclipse, almost the entire lunar disk will enter Earth’s umbra.
That makes the period around maximum especially valuable.
Capture darker exposures to preserve highlights, brighter versions for the shadowed surface, and several intermediate frames.
Don’t assume the brightest exposure will be the best.
Copper, rust, amber, orange, brown, and deep red tones can disappear if you brighten the eclipsed Moon too aggressively.
Make Maximum Eclipse Its Own Mini-Session
When maximum eclipse arrives, stop thinking about merely recording proof that you saw it.
Work the subject.
Shoot several exposures. Check focus again. Examine crater detail at high magnification. Experiment cautiously with ISO and shutter speed.
Create both tightly framed photographs and, if your setup permits, a wider environmental composition showing the Moon within the surrounding landscape.
You might include a skyline, tree silhouette, mountain ridge, building, bridge, or other recognizable foreground.
Secure the detailed Moon photograph first. Creative variations can follow once you’ve captured the essential frame.

Do Not Stop Shooting After Maximum
Many eclipse sequences become strangely incomplete because photographers pack up once maximum eclipse ends.
The second half matters.
Continue photographing Earth’s shadow as it retreats across the Moon.
Match your earlier intervals whenever possible. If you photographed every 10 minutes on the way toward maximum, continue approximately every 10 minutes afterward.
Those corresponding frames let you create a beautiful, symmetrical progression.
The sequence can visually move from bright Moon to shadow, maximum eclipse, returning light, and finally the restored Moon.
Without the exiting stages, you have documented only half the event.
Include One Wide Photograph of the Entire Scene
Telephoto images reveal lunar detail, but a wider photograph establishes place.
Step back from the strict Moon sequence for a few minutes and look at your surroundings.
Can the Moon be photographed above trees, rooftops, a city skyline, mountains, water, or an interesting architectural feature?
A single environmental photograph can become the opening or closing image when you present the series later.

Keep Notes While You Photograph
A sequence becomes much easier to organize when you know approximately when each stage occurred.
Your camera’s metadata records capture times, but a few notes can still help.
Record:
- Eclipse stage
- Significant setting changes
- Lens and focal length
- Unusual cloud or haze
- Moments when focus was readjusted
- Frames that looked especially promising
Do not spend the night writing a journal. Short notes are enough.
Later, you can compare timestamps and choose frames at equally spaced intervals.
Create an Eclipse Sequence Afterward
Once the event is over, resist the temptation to edit every photograph separately without considering the complete group.
First, select your sequence.
Choose images that represent meaningful progression and similar framing.
Next, apply consistent processing. White balance, contrast, sharpening, noise reduction, and color should feel related from frame to frame, while natural brightness differences remain visible.
A final sequence might contain:
7 frames: before eclipse, early partial, half eclipsed, deep partial, maximum, exiting partial, restored Moon.
9 frames: a more gradual progression with additional stages on each side.
11 to 13 frames: ideal when you want the viewer to study the movement of Earth’s shadow closely.
You can display the photographs individually or combine them into one composite showing the lunar progression across a dark background.
Prepare Eclipse Photographs for Printing
An eclipse sequence can make an especially striking panoramic print because the repeating Moon creates a natural visual rhythm.
Before printing, check the relationship between pixel dimensions, print dimensions, resolution, and cropping.

Before the eclipse:
- Charge every battery.
- Clear and format memory cards after backing them up.
- Check eclipse times for your location.
- Scout an unobstructed view.
- Mount your preferred lens.
- Establish your framing.
- Test your tripod.
- Practice manual focus.
- Decide on a shooting interval.
- Synchronize your camera clock.
During the eclipse:
- Photograph the normal Moon first.
- Capture the penumbral changes.
- Record the first visible umbral shadow.
- Maintain approximately the same framing.
- Adjust exposure as brightness falls.
- Photograph intermediate stages.
- Shoot more frequently near maximum.
- Bracket difficult high-contrast stages.
- Check sharpness periodically.
- Keep photographing after maximum.
- Capture the entire exit sequence.
- Finish with the returning Moon.
Photograph the Transformation, Not Just the Peak
Maximum eclipse may produce the photograph everyone expects, but the full sequence shows what a single image cannot.
It shows time.
One frame reveals the Moon. Another shows Earth’s shadow beginning its journey. Subsequent photographs document the lunar surface disappearing into darkness, reaching maximum eclipse, and gradually returning to full illumination.
That progression transforms lunar eclipse photography from a single night-sky photograph into visual storytelling.
Set up early, keep framing consistent, watch your exposure carefully, photograph at regular intervals, and stay until the final shadow has retreated.
When the night is finished, you will not simply have photographed a lunar eclipse.
You will have photographed its entire journey.
