You do not need a large camera bag to photograph one of summer’s most spectacular night-sky events.
An iPhone can capture stars, dramatic night landscapes, and even bright meteors when conditions cooperate. The key is understanding that photographing the Perseid meteor shower with an iPhone requires a different strategy from photographing it with a DSLR or mirrorless camera.
Instead of choosing an aperture, shutter speed, and ISO manually, you are largely working with Apple’s computational photography system. Your biggest advantages come from finding a dark sky, keeping the iPhone absolutely still, using a longer Night mode exposure, choosing the right lens, building a strong composition, and taking enough photographs to give yourself repeated chances to catch a meteor.
Most importantly, do not expect every frame to contain a brilliant streak.
Meteor photography involves probability. Your job is to put the iPhone in the best possible position and keep photographing.

When to Photograph the Perseid Meteor Shower
The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak during the night of August 12 into the early morning of August 13.
Conditions are unusually favorable because the peak coincides with a New Moon, meaning there should be very little moonlight washing out faint stars and meteors.
Although peak night provides the greatest potential activity, do not dismiss the surrounding nights.
Cloud cover can ruin a theoretically perfect night, while a beautifully clear sky one evening earlier or later can produce excellent results.
Photographing after midnight and into the pre-dawn hours generally gives you a stronger opportunity because the Perseid radiant becomes better positioned as the night progresses.
Arrive earlier, however.
Setting up while there is still some light makes it much easier to find a foreground, check your surroundings, and position your phone.
Why Photographing Meteors With an iPhone Is Different
A meteor can cross the sky in a fraction of a second.
Trying to watch for one and then tap the shutter usually fails because the meteor has disappeared before the photograph begins.
The better approach is to prepare a composition and repeatedly make Night mode exposures.
Your iPhone analyzes the scene’s darkness and automatically determines how much light it needs to collect. On supported models, Night mode activates when the camera detects sufficiently low light. Apple also allows photographers to adjust the Night mode exposure duration within the Camera app.
Stability changes what the phone can do.
When an iPhone recognizes that it is extremely steady, particularly when mounted on a tripod, longer Night mode exposures may become available. That additional time can reveal far more stars and gives a meteor more opportunity to appear during the exposure.
This is why technique matters more than simply pointing the phone upward.
Start With a Tripod
For Perseid photography, stability is probably the single most useful improvement you can make.
Handholding the iPhone during a multi-second Night mode exposure can create soft stars, blurred foreground details, and inconsistent results.
Mount the phone securely instead.
A tripod is usually enough, provided it is stable and the phone clamp holds the device firmly.
Keeping it lower often makes the entire setup more stable.
No tripod available?
Rest the iPhone against a backpack, rock, railing, table, or other solid object. The goal is to prevent movement throughout the exposure.
Use Night Mode Instead of Flash
Night mode should normally become your primary tool for photographing the Perseids.
When the scene becomes sufficiently dark, look for the Night mode icon in the Camera app.
Tap it and examine the available exposure duration.
The exact maximum will depend on your iPhone, the surrounding darkness, and how steadily the phone is held. According to Apple, mounting the iPhone securely can help produce more detailed Night mode photographs.
Select the longest practical Night mode exposure available once the composition is established.
Do not use the flash.
A phone flash cannot illuminate a meteor, star field, or distant landscape. Instead, it can brighten nearby objects and make the photograph worse.

Choose the Main Camera Whenever Possible
The widest lens may seem like the obvious choice because it captures more sky.
That is not always the strongest option at night.
On many iPhones, the main camera performs better in low light than the Ultra Wide camera because it has a more capable light-gathering system.
Start with the 1x camera.
Its field of view is still wide enough to capture a substantial portion of the sky while generally delivering better nighttime image quality.
Try the Ultra Wide lens if you have a spectacular foreground, a dramatic landscape, or an enormous stretch of open sky that does not fit comfortably in the standard view.
Digital zoom should usually be avoided.
Magnifying the image reduces the amount of sky visible and can exaggerate noise or softness. Meteor photography rewards coverage, so wider compositions usually give you better odds.
Do Not Aim Only at Perseus
Despite the name Perseid meteor shower, you do not need to point your iPhone directly at the constellation Perseus.
Meteors appear to radiate outward from that region, but they can streak across large areas of the sky.
In fact, a meteor farther from the radiant can create a longer-looking trail across your photograph.
Instead of obsessing over one precise direction, search for a broad, dark area of sky with an attractive foreground.
Consider including:
- a lone tree
- mountain silhouettes
- a beach
- a lake
- a quiet road
- a barn
- rock formations
- a tent
- distant hills
- an interesting building silhouette
A strong meteor above an identifiable landscape usually makes a much more compelling photograph than a streak floating in an empty black frame.

Lock Your Composition Before Darkness Takes Over
Scout your location before nightfall whenever possible.
Look for distracting streetlights, power lines, parked cars, illuminated signs, branches, or anything else that may intrude into the frame.
Once darkness arrives, these details become much harder to notice.
Position the horizon thoughtfully.
Giving approximately two-thirds or even three-quarters of the frame to the sky can work beautifully when meteor activity is the primary subject.
Still, leave enough foreground to provide scale.
Your photograph should feel like a place where something extraordinary happened, rather than simply a record of a dark sky.
Reduce Exposure if the Sky Looks Gray
Longer does not automatically mean better.
An iPhone Night mode photograph taken near a city can become surprisingly bright because the phone collects artificial light along with starlight.
When the sky begins to look gray, orange, or washed out, slightly shorten the Night mode duration.
Moving farther away from urban lighting will usually produce a greater improvement than extensive editing afterward.
Dark-sky locations give faint meteors more contrast against the background.
Another useful step is lowering the screen brightness before you begin. A brilliant phone display can make properly exposed night photographs look too dark and can interfere with your night vision.
Take Many Photographs
Meteor photography is one situation where taking only three or four photographs makes very little sense.
You cannot control when a Perseid will enter your frame.
Suppose each Night mode photograph lasts several seconds. One exposure may contain nothing. Another may capture an airplane. The next could include a satellite.
Then, suddenly, one frame may contain the meteor you were hoping for.
Keep repeating the process.
Once the iPhone is secured and the composition looks strong, avoid moving it unnecessarily.
Take photograph after photograph for an extended period.
Your chances increase because you are increasing the amount of time the phone spends recording the sky.
Use the Timer to Avoid Touching the Phone
Even a small tap can move a lightweight tripod.
One useful solution is the Camera app’s timer.
Set a short delay, then remove your hand before the exposure begins.
This approach is particularly helpful when the iPhone is mounted on a small tripod or resting against an improvised support.
An Apple Watch or compatible remote shutter method can also reduce physical contact with the phone.
Whatever method you choose, the principle remains the same.
Keep your hands away while the exposure is being recorded.
Watch for Condensation on the Lens
Summer nights can become humid.
After your phone has been outside for a while, moisture can accumulate on the lens without being immediately obvious.
Stars will begin looking hazy. Contrast falls. Bright objects may develop glowing halos.
Check the lens occasionally with a small flashlight set to a low brightness.
If condensation appears, gently wipe the camera glass with a clean microfiber cloth.
Cleaning the lens before the session is equally important. Fingerprints that seem harmless during daylight can scatter light significantly when photographing stars and distant artificial lights.

Edit the Photograph Gently
Night photographs rarely need aggressive editing.
Begin by checking exposure and black levels.
A slight reduction in brightness can deepen the sky, while modest contrast can separate stars and meteor trails from the background.
Next, examine:
- highlights
- shadows
- black point
- contrast
- warmth
- definition
- sharpness
- noise reduction
Be careful with sharpening.
Excessive sharpening can turn noise into harsh speckles and make stars look unnatural.
Noise reduction should also be restrained. Removing too much can erase faint stars along with unwanted grain.

Should You Shoot at 24 MP or 48 MP?
Higher resolution is not automatically better for meteor photography.
Low light places much greater demands on a phone camera than daylight does, and your priority should be capturing a stable, well-exposed photograph rather than simply producing the largest possible file.
If your iPhone supports several resolution options, consider testing them before the meteor shower.
The extra resolution from 48 MP can be useful when conditions are suitable, and you plan to crop or print the photograph. Still, Night mode availability and behavior can vary depending on the selected mode and iPhone model.

Try a Night-Sky Time-Lapse Too
Still photographs should remain your main approach if your goal is to capture an individual meteor.
However, time-lapse can create an excellent second piece of content from the same night.
Place the iPhone securely, point it toward your selected composition, and allow it to record for an extended period.
Apple notes that iPhone 12 and later models can capture more detail and brightness in low-light time-lapse recordings when mounted on a tripod.
Even if no dramatic meteor appears, moving stars, clouds, changing ambient light, and subtle activity across the landscape can produce a compelling sequence.

Your iPhone will not catch every meteor you see.
It does not need to.
Sometimes, dozens of quiet frames lead to one photograph in which a bright streak cuts through the stars above the landscape exactly where you hoped it would.
