Few camera warnings are more confusing than seeing “Card Full” when you are certain the memory card should still have space.
Perhaps you deleted hundreds of photographs yesterday. Maybe you checked the card on your computer and found only a handful of files. You may even have inserted what appears to be an almost-empty 64GB or 128GB SD card, only for the camera to insist that there is no room for another photograph.
The important thing to understand is that “Card Full” does not always mean the visible photographs have used every available gigabyte.
Your camera relies on the card’s file system, folder structure, recording settings, available writable space, and its own method of calculating remaining capacity. When one part of that system becomes confused, the warning can appear even though the situation looks completely different on your computer.
Before buying another card or formatting the one you have, work through the following checks in order.

First, Do Not Format the Card Immediately
Formatting is often an excellent solution for memory-card problems, but it should not be your first reaction if photographs are still stored on the card.
Start by transferring anything important to a computer or another storage device.
Check several photographs after copying them to make sure they open correctly. If the images are particularly valuable, having a second backup is even better.
Only after the files are safely stored elsewhere should you begin deleting folders, testing the card, or formatting it.
This precaution matters because a strange capacity warning can occasionally be an early sign of file-system corruption or a failing memory card.
Your Camera’s Remaining-Shots Number Is an Estimate
One of the most common misunderstandings involves the number next to the memory card symbol.
A camera might show that only 200 photographs remain even though calculations based on the card capacity suggest you should be able to take considerably more.
That number is typically an estimate, not a precise reading from a storage meter.
The camera calculates the remaining shots based on the expected size of the files you are currently creating.
Changing from JPEG to RAW, for example, can dramatically reduce the estimated number of photographs remaining because RAW files are much larger.
Selecting RAW + JPEG uses even more storage because the camera records two files for every shutter press.
Higher-resolution modes, uncompressed RAW options, TIFF files on cameras that support them, and certain high-resolution composite modes can further increase the amount of space required.
If you recently changed your image-quality settings, the card may not have mysteriously lost capacity. Your camera may simply be calculating how many larger files will fit.

Deleted Photos May Still Be Taking Up Space
Here is one of the most overlooked causes of an apparently full memory card.
Suppose you put the SD card into your computer, selected hundreds of photographs, and deleted them.
You then open the card and see an almost-empty DCIM folder.
Naturally, you assume all that space has been recovered.
Not necessarily.
Some computer operating systems can place deleted files from removable storage into a hidden trash or recycle folder instead of immediately removing the data from the card.
Those files may disappear from the folder you normally browse, yet still consume storage space.
The result can be extremely confusing:
- The card looks almost empty.
- Your photographs seem to be gone.
- Available storage remains surprisingly low.
- The camera reports that the card is full.
Emptying the computer’s Trash or Recycle Bin while the card is still connected may release that space, depending on the operating system and how the files were deleted.
An even cleaner photography workflow is to copy the files you need, verify the backup, return the card to the camera, and then format the card in the camera.
That approach gives the camera a fresh file structure it understands.
Protected Images Still Occupy Storage
Another possibility is protected or locked photographs.
Many cameras let you protect individual images so they cannot be accidentally erased through normal deletion commands.
Protection does not move the file somewhere else, and it certainly does not make the file smaller.
The photograph continues occupying its original amount of card space.
Therefore, using a command such as Delete All may leave protected files behind.
Review the card in playback mode and look for a key, lock, or protection symbol.
If protected photographs are no longer needed, back them up first, remove the protection, and then delete them.
When many old protected files have accumulated over months of shooting, the amount of storage space they occupy can be surprisingly large.
Check Which Card Slot Your Camera Is Actually Using
Photographers using cameras with dual memory-card slots have another possible explanation.
Imagine that Slot 1 contains a nearly full card while Slot 2 has plenty of available space.
Seeing the second card may lead you to assume the camera should continue recording there.
That depends entirely on the recording configuration.
Dual-slot cameras can commonly be configured for:
- Sequential recording
- Backup recording
- RAW to one card and JPEG to another
- Still photographs on one card and video on another
- Automatic card switching
- Recording to only one designated slot
Under a backup configuration, for example, a full card can stop shooting even when the other card still has significant free space, because the camera requires enough space on both cards to create duplicate files.
Open your camera’s card-recording or slot-selection menu and confirm exactly where new photographs are being written.
Do not assume the emptier card automatically becomes active.
Files You Cannot See May Still Be on the Card
A memory card contains more than the photographs visible during normal camera playback.
Depending on the camera and how the card has previously been used, it may contain multiple folders, thumbnails, video directories, camera databases, editing information, computer-generated folders, or files created by another device.
Perhaps you previously used the same SD card in another camera.
Maybe video clips are stored in a folder you did not examine.
The camera could also contain photographs across several DCIM subfolders rather than in a single obvious location.
Checking only one folder can therefore produce the impression that the card is nearly empty when substantial data remains elsewhere.
Look at the card’s total used capacity on the computer rather than simply counting the photographs you can see.
If the computer reports 55GB of a 64GB card is in use, something is occupying that space even when the main image folder looks small.
A Corrupted File System Can Report the Wrong Free Space
Memory cards use a file system that tells the camera where files are stored and which portions of the card are available for new data.
If that structure becomes damaged, the camera may have difficulty determining which areas are genuinely free.
Possible symptoms include:
- Card Full warnings
- Memory Card Error messages
- Photographs disappearing
- Files that will not open
- Camera freezing during playback
- Saving becoming unusually slow
- Incorrect remaining-shot counts
- Recording stopping unexpectedly
File-system problems can develop after removing a card while the camera is writing, disconnecting it improperly from a computer, losing power during a write operation, or repeatedly using the same card across different devices without reformatting.
Once your photographs are safely backed up, format the memory card inside the camera that will use it.
Formatting creates the folder structure and file system expected by that camera.
If storage problems return soon afterward, replace the card rather than repeatedly trusting it with important photographs.
Check Whether the Card Itself Is Failing
Flash memory does not last forever.
A card that has been heavily used, physically damaged, exposed to moisture, overheated, or repeatedly produced write errors deserves suspicion.
Warning signs include corrupted photographs, disappearing files, unusually slow writing, intermittent Card Error messages, or the camera alternating between recognizing and rejecting the card.
When troubleshooting, try a second known-good memory card.
If the camera behaves normally with the replacement, the original card is a much stronger suspect.
Always confirm the maximum card capacity and card type supported by your camera before purchasing.
Be Cautious With Suspiciously Cheap High-Capacity Cards
Counterfeit memory cards can create especially strange storage problems.
A card may report itself as 128GB or 256GB while physically containing much less usable flash memory.
Everything can appear normal until you exceed the card’s real capacity.
At that point, files may become corrupted, older photographs can be overwritten, recording may fail, or storage readings can become unreliable.
This is another reason to purchase storage from established retailers and reputable manufacturers.
Extremely low prices on unusually high-capacity cards should be treated with caution.
For valuable photography, dependable storage is more important than maximum advertised capacity.
Your Shooting Settings May Be Filling the Card Faster Than Expected
Sometimes the warning is correct, but the speed at which the card fills seems wrong.
Consider a camera producing a 45MB RAW file and a 15MB JPEG from every exposure.
One shutter press now produces approximately 60 MB of data.
Shoot a ten-frame burst, and you have generated roughly 600MB within seconds.
High-resolution modern cameras can create even larger files.
Burst photography, RAW + JPEG recording, exposure bracketing, focus bracketing, interval shooting, and high-resolution modes can consume storage surprisingly quickly.

Should You Delete Photos or Format the Memory Card?
For everyday cleanup after photographs have been safely transferred, formatting is generally a cleaner approach than repeatedly deleting hundreds or thousands of individual files.
An in-camera format recreates the storage structure expected by the camera and removes the clutter left behind by previous sessions.
However, formatting should never become an automatic response to an unexplained card problem when the card still contains photographs you need.
Backup first. Verify second. Format third.
That order is worth remembering.
Also, avoid formatting a card in one camera and immediately moving it to a completely different camera during important shooting. If the card is going to be used in another camera, back up its contents and format it in the camera that will use it next.
How Much Memory Card Space Do You Actually Need?
Your ideal card capacity depends more on the way you photograph than on a universal recommendation.
Occasional JPEG photography uses relatively little space.
RAW files require substantially more.
RAW + JPEG formats increase storage consumption again, while wildlife, sports, weddings, events, and action photography may generate thousands of files during a single session.
Video can consume storage considerably faster still, particularly at high resolutions and bitrates.
Instead of buying the largest card available, many photographers prefer several dependable medium-capacity cards. That approach limits how much work can be stored on a single piece of media at any given time.
Whichever strategy you choose, keep cards organized, format them only after verified backups, and retire any card that begins behaving unpredictably.
Turn the Fix Into a Photography Exercise
Once the card is working normally, take a short series of test photographs rather than immediately trusting it during an important shoot.
Capture ten or twenty images, review them, turn the camera off, restart it, and confirm that the files remain readable.
Then put the technical problem behind you and use the opportunity to photograph something intentionally.

When your camera says “Card Full” even though it isn’t, do not judge the situation solely by how many photographs appear in the DCIM folder.
The camera is responding to writable storage, file-system information, recording configuration, and the amount of space required for the files you are asking it to create.
Hidden deleted files are a surprisingly common culprit. Protected images, dual-slot settings, larger RAW files, corrupted card structures, and failing storage can produce similar symptoms.
Start by protecting your photographs. Check the card’s actual used capacity, investigate what is consuming the space, confirm the camera’s recording settings, and format only after everything important has been safely backed up.
If a freshly formatted card still produces the same warning, test another compatible card.
A reliable memory card should quietly do its job in the background. Once it starts creating recurring mysteries, replacing it is usually far less costly than discovering, after an important shoot, that your photographs were stored on media you could no longer trust.
