You press the shutter button once, hear two clicks, and discover two photographs on the memory card. Sometimes the files look identical. In other cases, one appears brighter, darker, sharper, or slightly different from the other.
This behavior rarely means that the camera is broken.
A camera may take two photos at once because continuous shooting, exposure bracketing, RAW+JPEG recording, an HDR mode, a multiple-shot noise-reduction feature, or a self-timer sequence has been activated. Certain cameras also record the same image to two memory cards, which can make it seem as though duplicate photographs were created.
The quickest solution is not to start changing random menu settings. Instead, compare the two files and look for the difference between them.
This guide will help you identify what your camera is doing, locate the responsible setting, and return to taking one photograph with each press of the shutter button.

First, Compare the Two Photographs
Before opening the camera menu, review both photographs closely.
Ask these questions:
- Do the two files show slightly different moments?
- Is one photograph brighter or darker?
- Does one file end in .JPG while the other ends in a RAW extension?
- Are both photographs identical but stored on separate memory cards?
- Does the camera take several photographs and then display only one finished image?
- Does the second shutter sound occur several seconds after the first?
Those clues can identify the setting much faster than searching every page of the camera menu.
Two photographs showing slightly different expressions or positions usually indicate continuous shooting. Different brightness levels point toward exposure bracketing. Matching photographs with different file extensions usually means RAW+JPEG recording is active.
When the camera combines multiple exposures into one photograph, an HDR or noise-reduction feature may be responsible.
1. Continuous Shooting Is Turned On
Continuous shooting is the most common reason a camera takes two photographs after one press.
This setting may be labeled:
- Continuous shooting
- Burst mode
- Continuous low
- Continuous high
- CL
- CH
- Low-speed continuous
- High-speed continuous
While continuous shooting is active, the camera continues recording frames for as long as the shutter button remains pressed. A very brief press may still be long enough for the camera to capture two images, especially when it can record several frames per second.

How to Stop It
Open the drive-mode menu and select Single Shooting, Single Frame, or the icon showing one rectangular frame.
The drive-mode button may be located on the camera body, inside the quick menu, or within the main shooting menu. Menu names vary by brand, so consult the camera manual if the control is difficult to find.
After choosing single shooting, release the shutter button fully between photographs.

Practical Tip
Do not press harder than necessary. A light, deliberate press makes it easier to capture one frame while still allowing you to switch back to continuous shooting for sports, wildlife, children, pets, and other moving subjects.
2. Exposure Bracketing Is Active
Exposure bracketing instructs the camera to take several photographs at different brightness levels.
A typical bracket contains:
- One darker exposure
- One standard exposure
- One brighter exposure
Depending on the camera settings, you may receive two, three, five, seven, or even nine files. Some cameras record the entire sequence with a single press. Others require you to hold the shutter button or press it once for each exposure.
If your camera produces two photographs and one looks noticeably brighter or darker, check whether it uses exposure bracketing.
Bracketing may appear in the menu as:
- AEB
- AE bracketing
- Exposure bracketing
- BKT
- Bracket settings
How to Stop It
Locate the bracketing control and return the exposure spread to 0, Off, or Single Frame.
Also check whether bracketing has been assigned to a function button or command dial. It can be activated accidentally while changing another setting.
Exposure bracketing is valuable when photographing interiors, landscapes, architecture, and scenes containing both bright highlights and deep shadows. However, it should be turned off after the sequence is complete.

3. The Camera Is Saving RAW and JPEG Files
Sometimes the camera takes only one photograph but saves it in two formats.
With RAW+JPEG recording selected, each shutter press creates:
- One RAW file containing extensive image data
- One processed JPEG file that is ready to view or share
Both files show the same moment, composition, exposure, and focus. Their filenames are usually similar, but the extensions differ.
Depending on the camera brand, the RAW file may end in:
- .CR3
- .CR2
- .NEF
- .ARW
- .RAF
- .ORF
- .RW2
- .DNG
The second file normally ends in .JPG or .JPEG.
Photo-management software can display the pair as two separate photographs, making it appear that the camera released the shutter twice.
How to Stop It
Open the image-quality or file-format menu and select either:
- RAW only
- JPEG only
- HEIF only, when supported
Choose RAW for the greatest editing flexibility. Select JPEG when you prefer smaller files and images that require less processing.
RAW+JPEG remains useful when you need an immediately shareable image but also want a larger file for later editing. Storage fills more quickly, though, because every photograph produces two files.
A reliable memory card can provide additional storage, but confirm the capacity and speed your camera supports before purchasing.

4. HDR Mode Is Recording Multiple Exposures
An in-camera HDR setting may take two or more photographs and blend them into one finished image.
HDR stands for high dynamic range. The camera records different brightness levels to preserve detail in both highlights and shadows.
During the process, you may hear several shutter sounds even though only one completed HDR photograph appears during playback. Some models also save the original exposures, creating multiple files on the memory card.
HDR can be useful for:
- Bright landscapes
- Interior rooms with visible windows
- Architecture
- Backlit scenes
- Stationary subjects with strong contrast
Movement between the exposures can cause ghosting. Leaves, people, vehicles, waves, or handheld camera movement may appear doubled or misaligned.
How to Stop It
Look for HDR, Auto HDR, HDR Mode, or Dynamic Range in the shooting menu and switch it off.
Be careful not to confuse HDR with dynamic-range optimization. Some cameras brighten shadows through processing without recording multiple exposures.

5. Multiple-Shot Noise Reduction Is Enabled
Several cameras offer a noise-reduction mode that records multiple exposures in rapid succession and combines them into a cleaner photograph.
This feature is often designed for handheld photography in low light. By comparing several frames, the camera can reduce visible grain while preserving more detail than a single high-ISO exposure might provide.
Possible menu names include:
- Multi Shot Noise Reduction
- Multi Frame Noise Reduction
- Handheld Night Scene
- Multi Exposure NR
- High ISO Multi Shot
Although the shutter may click two or more times, the camera usually saves one processed image. Certain models can preserve additional source files.
How to Stop It
Open the ISO, noise reduction, scene mode, or image processing menu, and select standard noise reduction or a regular shooting mode.
A faster lens, a steadier camera position, a wider aperture, or a properly configured ISO setting may provide a better solution when the subject is moving.

6. The Self-Timer Is Set to Take Several Photographs
Self-timers do more than delay the shutter. Many cameras allow the timer to take several photographs after the countdown finishes.
For example, the camera might wait 10 seconds and then record 2, 3, 5, or more frames. This option is helpful for group photographs because it increases the chance that everyone will have their eyes open.
A timer sequence can remain active after the original session. Later, you may press the shutter expecting one photograph and receive two instead.
How to Stop It
Open the self-timer or drive-mode menu and check both settings:
- The countdown length
- The number of photographs in the sequence
Change the quantity to one, or return the drive mode to single shooting.
Some cameras offer separate icons for a standard timer and a continuous self-timer. Choose the icon showing one frame beside the clock rather than several stacked frames.

7. Two Memory Cards Are Recording the Same Photograph
Cameras with dual card slots can save the same photograph to both cards.
This backup arrangement does not normally create two different images during playback on the camera. However, duplicates may appear after both cards have been imported into a computer or an editing program.
Dual-slot recording modes often include:
- Backup or redundant recording
- RAW to one card and JPEG to the other
- Still photographs to one card and video to the other
- Automatic overflow when the first card becomes full
Backup recording is highly useful for weddings, events, paid assignments, travel, and photographs that cannot be repeated. If one card fails, the second copy remains available.
How to Stop It
Open the card-recording or media settings and change the configuration from backup to overflow or single-card recording.
Avoid disabling backup merely to reduce import clutter when the photographs are important. Instead, import from one card and keep the second card untouched until the files have been copied and verified.
8. A Shooting Feature Is Creating Source and Processed Files
Creative and computational camera features sometimes generate both an original file and a processed version.
Examples can include:
- Multiple exposure
- Focus bracketing
- Focus stacking
- Panorama mode
- Film simulation bracketing
- White balance bracketing
- Picture style bracketing
- In-camera filters
- Pixel-shift high-resolution mode
One file may look natural, while the second may have a different color treatment, focus distance, crop, or level of detail.
Film simulation bracketing, for example, can create several JPEG files from one exposure, each with a different appearance. Focus bracketing records a series in which the focus point gradually moves through the scene.
How to Stop It
Review the drive, bracketing, image quality, and creative effect menus. Turn off any setting that mentions a sequence, bracket, stack, multiple exposure, filter, or alternate processing style.
Resetting only the shooting settings can help when you cannot locate the cause. Avoid performing a full factory reset until custom buttons, copyright information, wireless settings, and personal preferences have been documented.
What If You Hear Two Clicks but Find Only One Photograph?
Two sounds do not always mean two photographs were recorded.
On a DSLR, one sound may come from the mirror moving and another from the shutter mechanism. Mirror lock-up can also divide the process into two stages.
With a long exposure, the shutter opens at the beginning and closes at the end. Those sounds may be several seconds apart, but they belong to one photograph.
Long-exposure noise reduction can keep the camera busy after the photograph is taken by recording a dark reference frame internally. That reference is used to reduce hot pixels and noise, but it usually does not appear as a separate photograph on the card.
Mirrorless cameras may play an electronic shutter sound even when no mechanical shutter movement occurs.
Check the image counter and memory card rather than relying entirely on what you hear.
A Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
Follow this order when your camera unexpectedly creates two photographs:
- Set the drive mode to single shooting.
- Turn exposure bracketing off.
- Check whether RAW+JPEG recording is selected.
- Disable HDR and multi-shot noise reduction.
- Set the self-timer sequence to one photograph.
- Review dual-card recording options.
- Turn off creative bracketing or stacking features.
- Test the camera again in a well-lit location.
- Review the file extensions and exposure information.
- Consult the camera manual for model-specific menu names.
Testing in good light removes several variables. Use a stationary subject, select single shooting, and take one deliberate photograph. Confirm that the image counter increases by one.
If the problem persists after checking these settings, save your custom configuration and reset the shooting menu. A full factory reset should be the final software step, not the first.
Are Two Photographs Ever Better Than One?
Duplicate-looking files are not always wasteful.
A short two-frame burst can capture a better facial expression, sharper eye, improved wing position, or cleaner walking stride. Bracketing protects difficult highlights and shadows. RAW+JPEG provides both editing flexibility and immediate convenience. Backup recording protects irreplaceable work.
The setting becomes a problem only when it operates without your knowledge.
Learning why the camera produces each file gives you control over storage, editing time, battery use, and the final result. Rather than switching every multi-frame feature off permanently, choose each one according to the subject and purpose.
