Mixed lighting can make a photograph look confusing even when exposure and focus are correct. One side of a face may appear blue from a window while the other turns orange beneath a lamp. A street scene might combine green streetlights, magenta neon, cool evening sky, and warm storefronts.
One perfect white-balance setting rarely solves the problem. Separate light sources require a believable global adjustment followed by targeted local edits.
This guide explains how to fix mixed lighting without removing the atmosphere that made the scene worth photographing.

What Is Mixed Lighting in Photography?
Mixed lighting occurs when two or more light sources with different color temperatures or tints illuminate the same scene. Daylight is generally cooler than household tungsten lamps. Fluorescent fixtures may introduce a green tint, while some LEDs lean toward magenta, blue, or cyan. Neon can place intensely colored light on skin, clothing, pavement, and walls.
Common situations include:
- Window light combined with lamps
- Streetlights mixed with neon signs
- Blue-hour portraits near warm storefronts
- Indoor events under ceiling fixtures and flash
- Offices or stores with green fluorescent light
- Group portraits where people receive different color casts
Mixed lighting is not automatically a flaw. Warm-and-cool contrast can add depth, atmosphere, and separation. Correction becomes necessary when skin looks unhealthy, neutral objects appear implausible, or competing colors distract from the subject.
Why One White-Balance Adjustment Is Not Enough
Temperature shifts the entire photograph across a blue-to-yellow range. Tint shifts it between green and magenta. Both controls work well when one source affects most of the frame.
A global adjustment becomes less useful when one region is too blue, and another is too yellow. Cooling the lamp-lit side may make the window-lit side even bluer. Adding magenta to remove fluorescent green can push unaffected areas toward pink.
Choose a global white balance that makes the most important part believable, then correct remaining casts with masks, brushes, color ranges, or selective layers.

Reduce the Problem While Taking the Photo
First, identify the light that should lead the scene. Move the subject closer to that source, turn off a competing lamp, or change the angle so fewer colors overlap the face. During indoor portraits, stepping toward a window may be more effective than a complicated edit.
Manual white balance or a fixed Kelvin value can keep a series consistent when Auto White Balance shifts between frames.
Shoot RAW for greater flexibility in temperature and tint. A gray card or color checker provides a reliable reference, while a bi-color LED light can more closely match the added illumination to the room.

Practical tip: Photograph the reference card where the subject is standing, with the same lights turned on.
Step 1: Decide What Should Look Neutral
Choose the visual priority before moving a slider. In a portrait, believable skin may matter more than a perfectly white wall. For an interior, the paint, furniture, or product color might require greater accuracy. A night street photograph may benefit from keeping some neon intensity.
Look for objects whose colors you understand, such as white clothing, gray pavement, stainless steel, paper, or a neutral wall. Use them only when they are not reflecting colored light.
Creative intent matters too. Blue-hour shadows should not necessarily become gray, and a warm restaurant should not look clinical. The goal is credibility, not the removal of every color difference.
Step 2: Correct Exposure Before Fine Color
Color becomes difficult to judge when the subject is underexposed, highlights are clipped, or shadows contain heavy noise. Set overall exposure first, then refine Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Blacks.
Protect bright windows, lamps, signs, and reflective skin. Opening dark areas too aggressively can reveal green or purple noise, which may resemble another lighting problem. When only a face needs more brightness, use a subject or brush mask rather than lifting the whole photograph.

Step 3: Establish a Believable Global White Balance
Begin with the most important area. Use the White Balance eyedropper on a trustworthy neutral reference, then treat the result as a starting point.
Adjust Temperature until the dominant blue or yellow cast feels controlled. Next, move Tint gently to reduce green or magenta contamination. Watch the skin, white objects, gray surfaces, and known product colors as you make each change.
Small adjustments are safer than dramatic ones. When intentionally warm lamps share a frame with a cool exterior, find a middle point that protects the subject without flattening the contrast between environments.
Step 4: Separate the Light Sources With Masks
Once the global color feels close, create a mask for the region that still looks wrong. Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Capture One, Photoshop, and many mobile editors provide tools that can isolate a person, object, color, luminance range, or painted area.
For a window-and-lamp portrait, place one soft mask over the cool side of the face and another over the warm side. Warm the blue region slightly, cool the orange region carefully, and feather both masks so the transition remains invisible.
Color Range works well when a cast has a distinct hue. Luminance Range helps when the unwanted color appears mostly in highlights or shadows. A hand-painted brush offers more control around faces, clothing, and irregular edges.
Practical tip: Turn on the mask overlay while refining the selection, then switch it off before judging color.
Step 5: Remove Green Fluorescent Casts
Fluorescent lighting often adds green to skin, white clothing, ceilings, and pale walls. Begin by moving Tint slightly toward magenta. When the entire image becomes too pink, reduce the global change and target affected areas with a local mask.
A masked Tint adjustment may be enough. Point Color or the Color Mixer can further reduce a narrow green or yellow-green range. Photoshop users can apply Curves or Color Balance through a layer mask.
Keep legitimate greens in plants, clothing, signs, and décor. The correction should remove contamination without erasing real color.
Step 6: Correct Different Skin Tones Individually
People in the same room may receive different light. Correct each person according to their position, then compare the face with the neck, ears, hands, and visible shoulders.
Preserve natural undertones rather than forcing everyone toward a single hue. Deeper complexions may contain rich red, orange, yellow, and brown relationships. Pale complexions can show unwanted redness quickly, while olive undertones may shift green when Tint is mishandled. Local masks offer better control than broad Orange adjustments.

Fix Common Mixed-Lighting Scenes
Window Light Mixed With Lamps
Let the window lead during daytime portraits when it gives skin the cleanest foundation. Turn off unnecessary bulbs, move the subject closer to the glass, and keep warm lamps in the background as atmosphere. During editing, mask lamp spill only when it makes the complexion look muddy or orange.
Streetlights Mixed With Neon
Preserve neon that indicates the location, but reduce color that covers facial features or details. A Color Range mask can control intense reflections without desaturating the street.

Sort event photographs by lighting zone before synchronizing edits. Create separate anchor images for the dance floor, stage, hallway, and dining area, then review every important face.
Mistakes That Make Mixed Lighting Worse
Avoid cooling the entire photograph until warm skin turns gray. Heavy saturation reduction may hide the problem, but it also removes life from the scene. Strong global Color Mixer changes can damage clothing, décor, and background lights when repairing a single face.
Too many small masks can leave the image patchy, especially where feathered areas overlap. Build the edit from broad to specific: exposure, global white balance, large regional masks, then small color refinements.
Apply creative presets after correction. A strong grade placed over unresolved green, orange, or blue casts makes them harder to diagnose.
Turn Mixed Lighting Into a Practice Assignment
Create a still life near a window, then add one warm lamp from the opposite side. Photograph the arrangement with both lights, window light only, and lamp light only. Compare how the camera records color in each version.
Edit the mixed-light frame three ways: one global white balance, two regional masks, and a black-and-white conversion. The exercise will reveal when selective correction is necessary and when color contrast deserves to remain.

Prepare the Corrected Photo for Printing
Prints do not glow like a screen, so blue shadows may close up and warm highlights may feel stronger. Review the file at moderate screen brightness and consider a small test print.

Before exporting, ask whether the main subject looks believable, important neutrals still make sense, and warm-to-cool contrast supports the scene. Check each person separately in group portraits. Review mask edges at normal size, then inspect critical transitions more closely.
Compare the result with the original after taking a brief break. Color adaptation can make an extreme correction seem normal after staring at it for too long.
Mixed lighting does not require perfect neutrality. Strong editing identifies which colors communicate atmosphere and which interfere with the subject. Establish a credible global foundation, selectively correct regional problems, and preserve the contrast that gives the photograph depth.
When the final image feels natural without looking colorless, the correction has done its job.
